Skills for a Lifetime: HOLY TRINITY PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL Prior to the January 2010 earthquake which destroyed its facilities and killed some 55 students and five faculty members, Holy Trinity Professional School on the Cathedral Complex in Port-au-Prince had nearly 2,000 students. Since its founding in 1974, young men and women have come for rigorous vocational training in auto mechanics, construction, computers, electrical work, electronics, and plumbing. There are now some 640 students who come daily to a new facility in Croix des Bouquets on the outskirts of Port-au- Prince. Too far from its previous location and therefore, too expensive for many students and faculty to reach, the School operates on about $210,000 a year. From this budget, some 35 full and part-time faculty are paid (hourly), along with another 20 staff in administration, housekeeping, and security. From this budget also, money is set aside for financial aid, as there are no sponsored students. The professors all have diplomas in their areas of expertise. And, there are many areas of expertise. A plumbing student, for example, will have different professors for
2 HOLY TRINITY PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL plumbing theory, plumbing design, English, French, and mathematics. The gender ratio of students varies by course of study. In auto mechanics, the most popular course, there are 27 boys and three girls, although far-sighted administrators have designated 13 scholarships for girls, to encourage them to pursue this vocation. (Just one experience in Port-au-Prince traffic will tell you just how much these students skills are needed in the wider society!) The computer program, by contrast, has 30 boys and 60 girls enrolled in study. Tuition costs $500 a year per student for whatever course she or he is pursuing. Most courses are three years in duration, except for the computer program, which is six months. There is an additional two-year certificate program available in auto mechanics. There are no uniform requirements and the textbooks, which students purchase themselves, are inexpensive. The Belgian Government provides some equipment, but, because the supplies are used up during the coursework, the need for replenishment is constant. Although there is no formal tracking program following graduation, students are employed by such diverse companies as Toyota, Bermann Motors, EDH (the
HOLY TRINITY PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL 3 national electric company), DINEPA (the national water company) and a variety of smaller businesses. In recognition of the students entrepreneurial spirit, there is a third year class where students learn how to start their own businesses; and there are many groups of ten or more doing precisely that. Père Tancrel Diegue, who has headed Holy Trinity Professional School for eight years and has been Dean of the Cathedral for five, looks forward to the day when the School returns to its former site in downtown Port-au-Prince, sharing the Cathedral Campus with Holy Trinity Primary and Secondary Schools. Because demand for training is so great, plans are to keep the Croix des Bouquets site in operation as well. In the past, the Professional School operated with a budget surplus, which it gave to the Diocese. It is this surplus which enabled the school to reopen after the earthquake on the Croix des Bouquets property it had previously purchased. overachievers on their own: he is designing the complex to attain at least Silver LEED Certification. Mr. Sabin posits a rethinking of the relationship between property demarcation, security, scenery, and urban values. In so doing, he is positioning the schools to become a beacon in the way our society uses, interacts, and thinks of urban space. Plans for the new 3,412 square meter Holy Trinity Professional School forms a complex with the Primary and Secondary Schools, where it will share some classrooms and the auditorium. The Professional School will be five stories high, at the back of the property, on Rue des Miracles (an appropriate name for a street witnessing such robust new life!). All three schools will be built around a courtyard, which opens to a view of the new Cathedral. The Future Holy Trinity students have been known as overachievers throughout the schools history. The Haitian-American architect, Hervé Sabin, who has created the concept design, hopes the new facilities can be
4 HOLY TRINITY PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL There are 12 classrooms and 10 working studios/labs in the Professional School. These latter will house the hands-on education for auto mechanics, electrical, plumbing, wood working, building construction, and, of course, computers. They will be large enough to accommodate cars and trucks, so that students can continue to hone their skills even in inclement weather. A heavy duty freight elevator will enable easy transport from the ground level to all five floors hauling automobiles, cement blocks, woodworking materials, and more. It will be well-used! Phase I of the architectural plan also includes 11 Holy Trinity High School classrooms on three of the five floors, the shared auditorium, restrooms, circulation space, and a second elevator which will transport faculty and high school students to the auditorium. Given the size of the property, the needs of all of the schools, and the desire not to move students into temporary quarters as additional construction occurs, it is most cost effective to build this entire block first. (See phasing diagram.) Thus, the cost includes preparing the site infrastructure for all three schools at the same time. In addition to preparing the ground itself, this infrastructure also includes water reservoirs and potable water, septic system, site drainage and electrical cables.
What Will the Construction Cost? 23 $90,000 2,070, $ 250,000 2,500,000 Freight elevator 400,000 Regular elevator 500,000 6 $25, ,000 Auditorium 1,250,000 Library 1,000,000 Design fees 628,360 Permits, Geotechnical Advice, and Insurance 349,798 Site Infrastructure 1,039,560 TOTAL $9,887,718 What Does This Mean for the Students? And for Haiti? Jobs. Skilled labor to build Haiti s future. Pure and simple, Haiti has a staggering unemployment rate. Much of the labor force is unskilled. Education, and in this instance, vocational education, is the key to economic development. For starters, Professional School graduates could work on rebuilding Holy Trinity Primary and Secondary Schools, the Episcopal University, the Cathedral, Art Museum, College Saint Pierre, Music School, Convent of the Sisters of St. Margaret: all components of the diocesan infrastructure destroyed in the earthquake. Their skills in construction, woodworking, plumbing and electrical systems could all come into play to rebuild the Diocesan infrastructure. In the very best sense of the phrase what goes around comes around, Professional School graduates could make a profound difference in the life of The Episcopal Church in Haiti, in their own lives, and, as the government and business sectors build, in their country. For more information and to discuss a gift, please contact: Elizabeth M. Lowell Director of Development The Episcopal Church (212) elowell@episcopalchurch.org
