Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia ; telephone number for questions about the accreditation of Clemson University. As a nationally ranked research university, Clemson welcomes students with AP, IB and transfer credit. The University recognizes the academic value to earning college hours before even setting foot on campus, and we encourage students with credits to apply and transfer to Clemson. This guide gives important, basic information to those with AP, IB and transfer credits. Additional information can be found on our website, clemson.edu/ admissions/undergraduate/transferring-credits.html. Advanced Placement (AP Credit) Clemson University strongly endorses the AP program and consistently ranks among top colleges and universities in the nation in the number of students reporting AP grades. If you enroll in AP courses through your high school, you ll have the opportunity to take a national examination at the end of the school year. When registering for the exam, indicate if you wish to have the final results sent to Clemson University (CEEB #5111). The exams are graded on a 1 to 5 scale, and if you achieve a 3 or higher, you ll receive the appropriate course credit as outlined in the AP credit chart. AP examination grades should be sent directly to Clemson from the College Board; specific information can be found in the Undergraduate Announcements ( You will receive notification from Clemson outlining any course credit that you will receive through the AP program. Be sure to include your Social Security number when registering for AP exams. This will save time and ensure that credit is automatically awarded to your Clemson academic record. page 3

5 Transfer Credit Transfer students are defined as individuals who have earned a high school diploma or an equivalent credential and have subsequently attended a college or university in a full-time or part-time status during a regular semester. When applying to transfer into Clemson, candidates should: 1. Submit an online application. 2. Request final official transcripts be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions from each college or university previously attended. You must submit official transcripts even if you do not expect to receive credit for the work or if you withdrew prior to receiving final grades. Note: If you have been provisionally accepted, you must also arrange for Clemson to receive updated transcripts for any additional work you complete. A transcript that states issued to student is not considered official. 3. If you took college-level courses (dual enrollment) while in high school, be sure to send official transcripts from the institution where credit was earned. Application Deadlines Transfer applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they become complete. Admission is closed when all classroom space has been committed. December 1: Deadline to apply for spring admission (January enrollment).* March 1: Deadline to submit the FAFSA for needbased scholarships for the fall semester. April 1: Deadline to submit the FAFSA for loans and grants for the fall semester. July 1: Final deadline to apply for fall admission. * All official documents (except for your current term) must be postmarked by December 15. Note: transfer students who wish to apply for the Summer or Spring terms should submit their application two weeks before classes begin. ** Consideration for transfer with fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours is possible, but applicants must also submit high school transcripts and test scores (SAT or ACT). High school performance will be reviewed first, and a strong high school GPA, class rank and standardized test score is necessary. College academic performance is also required and will be reviewed, in addition to the high school information. Transfer Admission Requirements Transfer admission is increasingly competitive. To be considered for admission, candidates should 1. Complete a year of college study after high school graduation at a regionally accredited institution 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of transferable work (AP, IB and dual enrollment credit cannot be used toward the 30 semester or 45 quarter-hour requirement).** 2. Earn a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) 3.0 is preferred. 3. Complete freshman-level courses in English, science and mathematics for their intended major at Clemson University. 4. Be in good standing and eligible to return to the institution last attended. Because of applicant pressure and/or space limitation, some majors such as graphic communications; sports communication; communication studies; construction science and management; general engineering; health science; nursing; parks, recreation and tourism management; production studies in performing arts; early childhood education; elementary education; special education; and some of the secondary education majors have more selective admission standards. For these programs, transcripts reflecting the most recent term should be submitted as soon as they re available. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for current requirements. Depending on the quality and amount of coursework you have taken, we will make one of two decisions. 1. Yes. You have been provisionally accepted. Your acceptance will be confirmed when all previous coursework is completed. 2. No. Unfortunately, at this time your credentials do not meet current admission requirements. However, we will be glad to help you work toward entering Clemson by suggesting additional coursework at another institution. Please note that due to limited classroom space, standards for transfer admission may be modified. page 8 page 9

6 Evaluation of Transfer Credits The evaluation of academic credits from other institutions rests with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Estimated approval for use of these credits in your degree program is determined by your academic adviser. In general, transfer credit is awarded when the course: 1. Is earned at a school accredited by a regional accreditation association, such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 2. Similar in description to the catalog synopsis of the corresponding course at Clemson. 3. Required or permitted as an elective in your curriculum. 4. Graded at least a C or better. 5. Not a duplication of credits already earned. Clemson does not transfer grades, only credits; therefore, you will enter Clemson without a grade-point average. Your class standing is determined as follows: Number of Credit Hours Transferred Class Standing Sophomore Junior 95 and above Senior Credit by Examination Learning experiences including, but not limited to, military service schools, noncollegiate-sponsored instruction, work-related experiences, etc. will not be evaluated for transfer; however, enrolled students may request credit by examination for any nontransferable learning experience. Standardized Test Scores, Courses Taken Elsewhere, Repeated Courses, Courses Taken While on Academic Suspension There is no time limit for the use of standardized test scores (e.g. SAT or ACT) in the evaluation of transfer candidates. For courses taken elsewhere, credit will be awarded for grades of C or better, provided Clemson faculty approve the course. Courses taught at nonbaccalaureate, degree-granting institutions are not transferable if they are taught at the 300 or 400 levels at Clemson. (The only exceptions to this are a limited number of nursing courses.) There are no limitations on transferring courses taken elsewhere by a suspended student or on coursework repeated due to failure. Institutional and Programmatic Maximums of Transferable Credit To qualify for an undergraduate degree, a student must complete from Clemson a minimum of 37 of the last 43 credits presented for the degree. Additional programmatic maximums also apply to B.S. degrees in the following majors: accounting, economics, financial management, management and marketing. At least 50 percent of the total credits taken in accounting, economics, finance, law, management, management science and marketing must be taken at Clemson University. Lander University Lenoir Rhyne College Newberry College North Georgia College North Greenville University Presbyterian College Wofford College Courses, GPAs, Withdrawals, Repeated Courses All courses taken and the overall grade-point average from each institution attended are considered in the admission evaluation. Additional consideration is given to the pattern of progress and the number of completed courses that transfer into the intended major. Curriculum Year Students transferring may select the curriculum that was outlined in the Clemson University Undergraduate Announcements ( at the time they entered the sending institution, provided they have been in continuous enrollment. Transfer students may select any curriculum adopted subsequent to that initial curriculum. After enrolling at Clemson, if transfer students change from one major to another, they will complete all the requirements included in the new curriculum that are in effect at the time of the change. If all work toward a degree is not completed within six years after the initial enrollment at the sending institution, the student may be required to take additional courses. page 10 page 11

9 College Board College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) This program has very limited recognition at Clem son. A few departments accept credit for CLEP subject-matter examinations; however, CLEP general examinations are not recognized. Credit can be awarded for introductorylevel courses according to criteria established by the following departments: chemis try and English (composition only). Numerical scores plus essays, required when offered as part of a CLEP examination, will be evaluated by the appropri ate department. CLEP is designed primarily for adults with nontraditional learning experiences. CLEP credit cannot be used to meet admission requirements. Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment courses enable high school students to take college-level courses and earn college credit before graduating from high school. Students should have official transcript(s) sent directly to Clemson s Office of Undergraduate Admissions from the registrar of each college or university where credit was earned. A transcript that states issued to student is considered unofficial. Courses that have previously been evaluated are listed on our Transfer Course Equivalency List (TCEL). If there is a course you have previously taken that is not listed on the TCEL, the course will be evaluated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions once you have been accepted to Clemson. Students will be notified of the credit they will receive at Clemson before enrolling in the fall.
