Prepares you well for college-level writing. Classes are discussion-based, especially within the History department. Class sizes are small and all the faculty members are very accessible. Very heavy work load. [U Penn] The best departments at l (GFS) are the English and History departments. The student body is not too competitive, (as no classes are graded on curves) but some competition exists. More emphasis is put on essays than on tests or quizzes. Great teachers. [Northwestern] Class sizes are, for the most part, no larger than 18 students and take place from 8:20 to 3:20 in the afternoon. Work load is very heavy. Classes are discussion based. Germantown Friends offers study abroad in Scotland, for 8th grade students, and study abroad in Mexico and France for freshman language students. Germantown Friends offers no Advance Placement courses. All of Germantown Friends senior classes are considered advanced and ahead of AP courses. Junior Project students in their junior year receive the month of January off from school to pursue an area of interest. Germantown Friends recently completed construction of a new Gymnasium, renovation of its performing arts center, and is breaking ground on construction of its new science building. College Counseling [Temple] Have a lot of connections and are experienced, but ten to overbook. [U Penn] Starts early Junior year, and instead of having faculty dedicated to college advising each student picks between regular teachers and administrators for their personal college counselor. [Northwestern] During winter quarter of your junior year, students are asked to submit a request form for one of six college advisers, who are also members of the faculty. Counselors are very accessible and willing to help. Admissions Process [Temple] The school doesn't favor athletes really unless they have something else also going for them (minority, good at math, rich, etc). They pride themselves on not recruiting. [U Penn] l prefers well rounded students, and will not give much of an advantage to good athletes, though it can't hurt. The interview process is fairly laid back, and the interviewer would like to get an honest answer rather than the right one. GFS likes parents that get involved in the process, but not ones that try to get too involved. [Northwestern] GFS is highly selective. GFS usually admits around 10 students for the start of their 6th grade year. Sixth grade class sizes are usually around students and there are three sixth grade classes. The number expands to around to increase grade size for 7th grade, and around 2-3 for 8th grade new students are added to the freshmen class and after that, two or three students may be admitted from 10-12th grades as transfer students. GFS prides itself on diversity An admission interview is required. Students, do not worry about dress; parents, business casual is appropriate. Parents should be very involved in their students' admission process. GFS is an excellent institution and prides itself on parental involvement in school affairs. Extra-Curricular Activities [Temple] Community service is huge at GFS. Every class does community service at least once a year. Varsity sports practice at least 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, with practice, games, or tournaments on Saturdays most weekends. They are worth only 1 sports credit for juniors and seniors. [U Penn] There are many clubs and sports programs (though not football) at Germantown Friends. Quality of School Life [Temple] This is not a boarding school. There is one dining area which is mediocre and has very high prices. Seniors can leave campus for lunch. The ethnic background is more diverse than the socioeconomic background but neither is great.

5 [U Penn] There is no on campus housing. The dining hall is okay, with several options every day. The neighborhood isn't safe to wander into, but campus is safe. Many of the facilities are new or recently renovated. The student body is fairly diverse. [Northwestern] Three gymnasiums. In the process of constructing a new green building for the science department set to open in 2009.The cafeteria is located on the lower floor of the main building and serves breakfast and lunch. Most students are satisfied with the quality of the food. Students have the option of ordering food from local stores or restaurants and seniors can leave campus when they don't have a scheduled class. In the past, students have been taunted or punched by other students from neighboring high schools. GFS has security guards at all of the schools entrances to ensure student safety. However, GFS prides itself on its "open door" policy and is open and inviting to members of the surrounding community.
