2 History Fukuoka University traces its origins back to when Fukuoka Higher Commercial School was established under the prewar education system. It was renamed Kyushu College of in, and two years later it became Fukuoka College of. In, as part of the restructured postwar education system, it was reestablished as Fukuoka College of. Finally, when the Faculty of and was established at the college in 6, its name was changed to Fukuoka University. Since then, Fukuoka University has become one of the largest universities in western Japan, adding new faculties and graduate schools as shown in the charts.
