The University The University opened as Stanislaus State College in 1960, with a faculty of 15 and fewer than 800 students, at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock.

3 The University The University opened as Stanislaus State College in 1960, with a faculty of 15 and fewer than 800 students, at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. The institution moved to its current location in 1965, gained university status and its present name in 1986, and opened its Stockton Center in Today, the University serves a diverse student body of 10,000 at two locations in the Central Valley a beautiful 228-acre campus in Turlock, and the Stockton Center, which is located in the city s historic Magnolia District. Dr. Ellen Junn has begun her second year as President of the University, and she has brought a bold, new vision for its future. Serving the San Joaquin Valley, the University is a critical educational resource for a six-county region of approximately 1.5 million people. Widely recognized for its quality academic programs, the University has 10 nationally accredited programs and approximately 400 full-time faculty. Over eighty percent of full-time faculty members hold doctorates or terminal degrees in their fields. The University offers a rich mix of 43 undergraduate majors, 41 undergraduate minor programs, 15 master s programs, 7 post-graduate credential programs, and one doctorate program in educational leadership. New instructional facilities have been built for the unique pedagogy of professional programs, laboratory sciences, and performing arts. Stanislaus State will adopt a new strategic plan in the fall of The University continues to receive national recognition with its ranking as one of the best 373 colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review. The University was one of 12 public universities in the nation to be recognized by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities for demonstrating exceptional performance in retention and graduation rates. In addition, U.S. News and World Report ranks Stanislaus State as one of the Top Public Universities-Master institutions in the West in its America s Best Colleges ratings, and Money ranks Stanislaus State as the top value-added public university in the country. 9 The Position The Associate Vice President for Student Success (AVPSS) is part of the leadership team for the division of Student Affairs, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Suzanne Espinoza. The Associate Vice President oversees the Academic Success Center, Educational Opportunity Program, Student Support Services, Career Development Center, Testing, and the Tutoring Center, setting a tone of excellence, teamwork and service and creating a campus environment that supports student success. These programs provide safe and supportive services to promote access, retention, academic achievement, graduation and employment of students. The AVPSS provides executive-level leadership to advance the University s and division s mission through effective, efficient and strategic support of the VP s priorities and vision, commitment to excellence, teamwork and exemplary service. The AVPSS is responsible for creating a campus environment that supports and sustains student success through a collaborative process with Academic Affairs and other university and community constituents. The AVPSS has oversight for university-wide academic advising, testing, tutoring and learning-centered activities leading to student retention and graduation. The AVPSS provides overall management, planning, administration, and evaluation of these programs, services, personnel, policies, procedures, facilities, and budgets. This position also provides leadership, management and oversight for program assessment within the Division. The AVPSS performs a wide range of executive and high-level academic and operational duties of broad scope and complexity requiring outstanding professional ability, exceptional organizational skills, originality, mature judgment and a thorough knowledge of academic, administrative and organizational structure. The AVPSS ensures high quality and student-centered approaches to the delivery of services; represents the university and division on internal and external committees; and serves on the division s senior management team. Opportunities for the new Associate Vice President include the following; Enabling students to develop as scholars, citizens and leaders by creating environments, communities and programs that promote academic success, appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility; Building bridges between academic and student affairs, using the talents of faculty and staff to develop and implement programs that enhance the student experience; Continuing to implement the recommendations of the advising task force, strengthening the role of the faculty in the advising program and connecting advising more closely to academic affairs; Collaborating with the leaders of the First-Year Experience, the Honors Program, residence life and others to support high impact practices, address bottlenecks and develop programs to increase retention and graduation rates; Leading the career center in developing co-curricular programming that encourages students to be intentional about the ways in which they structure their college experiences and plan for careers and life after college; Assessing the division s programs and using the data produced to ensure that programs are designed, aligned and supported in a way that best enhances student access, achievement and success; and Developing short and long-term goals as part of the University s and Division s strategic plans and implementing strategies to meet those goals. 10 California State University, Stanislaus Associate Vice President for Student Success

Opportunities Qualifications The Associate Vice President for Student Success will have the following: A Master s degree in Higher Education Administration or related field required; Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred.

At least five years of progressively responsible senior administrative experience in higher education, including experience in all aspects of personnel management, planning, and budgeting Ability to collaborate and build teams across divisional lines Knowledge of student development theory and experience with student-centered retention and advising programs Experience in working with a diverse student body, with an understanding of and sensitivity to its needs, and the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships in a diverse multicultural environment Strong critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills Experience using assessment instruments to evaluate and improve student services; and Understanding of federal policies, procedures, reporting requirements and compliance regulations and experience in management in a collective bargaining environment. 11 California State University, Stanislaus Associate Vice President for Student Success
