1 Set for PRC Review in Fall 2018 Program (CONS) - Construction Technology AS.1165 Program Catalog Summary: Associate in Science: SC Program: AS.1165 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The curriculum prepares students for entry-level employment in the carpentry trade. Award of specific apprenticeship credit will depend on the employer, local union regulations, aptitude of student as well as curriculum completed. Under normal circumstances, credit for partial fulfillment of apprenticeship requirements can be attained. This degree is approved through the California Community College Chancellor s Office. Upon satisfactory completion of all degree requirements and filing an application for graduation with Admissions and Records, the student s transcript will reflect completion of this degree. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this degree, the student should be able to: 1. Explain and demonstrate the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. 2. Identify other construction hazards on your job site, including hazardous material exposures, environmental elements, welding and cutting hazards, confined spaces, and fires. 3. Perform construction math with and without a calculator including adding, subtraction, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, percentages as well as decimals in the field. 4. Identify power tools commonly used in the construction trades. 5. Recognize relate and identify basic construction drawing terms, components, symbols and different classifications of construction drawings. 6. Calculate the quantities of lumber and wood products using industry-standard methods. What changes could be (or have been) made to improve the program?: There is not a strong demand for skilled construction workers. If the demand returns in the future, the college can consider the resurrection of this program. Resources needed to implement the changes noted above: Since no students are studying in the program no resources are needed. Labor Market Demand: There is minimal demand for construction laborers Duplication of training: None Program effectiveness: The college discontinued offering courses when enrollment fell off. The full-time faculty member was not replaced. Courses for the program have not been offered anytime recently due to lack of interest. The equipment needed for the courses has been auctioned off. The Shasta Building Exchange is offering basic construction courses to individuals in the area that make the degrees redundant. The program was not aligned with CSU Chico s construction program.
