Oval Mall Columbus, OH Phone Fax comm.osu.edu UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTS NEEDED Autumn 2016 The School of Communication both welcomes and encourages undergraduate student involvement in the research programs of faculty and graduate students by serving as undergraduate research assistants. Research assistants play a vital role in the research of any university, by helping with data collection and analysis, computer programming, library research, and writing of research reports for presentation and conferences and for publication. Undergraduates in the social sciences with research experience (especially in the form of an undergraduate thesis) and who meet other entry requirements are often highly sought out by graduate schools, including the graduate program in the School of Communication at The Ohio State University. Furthermore, people with research skills are also sought out in industry and the corporate world. Thus, serving as a research assistant can give you a competitive advantage in your quest for furthering your education in the social sciences or obtaining employment upon graduation. If you need a letter of recommendation from a faculty member for graduate school or a job, you will get a much stronger letter if you work in a faculty member s research group. Because there is no such thing as too much experience, we especially encourage students to get involved early in their education, at least a year before graduation. It sounds a lot better for a faculty member to say that that you worked in their lab for two, three, or even four years than only a semester. The School of Communication is currently recruiting undergraduate research assistants for ongoing research projects described below. You may earn independent study course credit by working on these projects or get involved on a voluntary basis details are to be discussed with the faculty/project contacts. If you see a project description that interests you, please contact the faculty member directly (unless otherwise indicated in project description). 2 Autumn 2016 School of Communication Projects Project title: Entertainment Research Lab Faculty supervisor: Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick Contact information: George Pearson, Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, Total number of research assistants sought: 1-2 Project location: Derby Hall Minimum commitment per week: 6 hours (incl. 1 hour lab meeting) Preferred qualifications: strong interest in social scientific research, specifically communication; we like to have motivated, reliable, friendly people on the team ; GP A > 3.5 prefe rre d Project description: The entertainment research lab consists of doctoral students/postdoc collaborators, Professor Knobloch-Westerwick, and undergraduate research assistants. We meet weekly to discuss research projects (the meeting is voluntary for undergraduate collaborators). For the spring semester, we seek assistance with projects on the following research topics: - Can website interactivity increase consumption of counter-attitudinal news - Does reading a print magazine or reading a news website increase the amount of counter-attitudinal news read? Undergraduate research assistants may gather experiences in the following research activities: - Certification in collecting data from research participants, collecting data in the research lab - Assisting with developing research procedures (questionnaires, instructions) - Setting up online research procedures - Coding observed behaviors or media stimuli - Assisting with compiling and developing media stimuli, editing video and/or text stimuli - Brainstorming research ideas and approaches - Discussing and presenting research publications Undergraduate research assistants usually present their work at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum (on campus) in May. 3 Preferred qualifications: Previous research experience (preferred, not required) Project description: A research study in which participants complete behavioral task and surveys in a laboratory setting, as well as report their daily activities for a 28 day time period. Project title: Narrative Lab Projects (various) Faculty supervisor: Emily Moyer-Gusé Contact information: Emily Moyer-Gusé moyer-guse.1@osu.edu Total number of research assistants sought: 2/3 Project location: Various, primarily Journalism Building and Derby Hall Minimum commitment per week: At least 6 hours per week (2 credits) Preferred qualifications: Experience with research preferred but not essential. Minimum GPA: 3.2. Project description: Applicants will assist with various ongoing projects being undertaken by the School of Communication s Narrative Lab. We have several projects currently in data collection, and the main responsibility will be assisting in the running of data collection sessions. Applicants may also have the opportunity to work with graduate students in research and design of future projects.
