2 Manager Intern Training Program The Manager Interns work 8 hours per day and will work in cafeterias during the first 6 weeks of school to become acclimated to School Food Service operational procedures. The Manager Intern Training Program will start the first week of October and run for sixteen weeks ending in February/March. During training, interns are placed in elementary, middle and high school food service programs for on the job management training for a minimum of four weeks per school. One day per week the interns meet for an all-day classroom and workshop training. On the final class day, interns are expected to pass a final exam to complete the Manager Intern Training Program. At the end of the training period, manager interns will be qualified to apply for Food Service Manager positions as they become available. Graduated interns are utilized in schools to cover for absent managers and to assist in kitchens when managers are in need of extra assistance. Food Service Manager Applicants must have successfully completed the Manager Intern Training Program to qualify for Food Service Manager positions. Food Service Managers oversee the daily operation of school kitchens. They supervise staff, are responsible for ordering and tracking inventory of products, as well as monitoring assigned budgets for their operation. Interns are selected each year for the School Food Service Manager Intern Training Program. To qualify for the program, applicants must provide evidence of at least a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Applicants will also be required to test and attain satisfactory scores on the T.A.B.E. (Test of Adult Basic Education) test prior to interviewing. These satisfactory scores must be 10.0 in reading, total mathematics, and language. Food Service Manager Intern positions will be advertised in the spring each year for the fall of the following year. Applicants will be screened, qualified candidates interviewed, and a selection will be made in June. Employment will start in August. The number of interns will vary depending on anticipated need.

3 Manager Intern Training Program Applicant Guidelines: Each person interested in applying for a Food Service Manager position must submit the following documents to be considered for an interview: 1. Cover Letter and Resume - This should include (but not be limited to) why they want to become a Food Service Manager, as well as past employment/work experience, education and classes taken pertaining to food service. 2. (a) High School Diploma or GED - On the day of their interview at the School Food Service Office, applicants must bring their ORIGINAL document for verification. THIS IS REQUIRED TO CONTINUE WITH THE INTERVIEW PROCESS. A staff member will make a copy during your interview. (b) College Graduates Have OFFICIAL SEALED TRANSCRIPTS sent to School Food Service. College graduates are exempt from having to take the T.A.B.E. test as described below. 3. *Results of Test of Adult Basic Education (T.A.B.E.), Section D Must have a minimum score of 10.0 in all categories. 4 Opportunities In School Food Service Looking for Work? School Food Service is looking for energetic and enthusiastic people to work during the school day for 4 to 6 hours per day as Food Service Assistant I positions during the school year. These positions offer prospective candidates opportunities to pursue afternoon college courses or just the ability to be home when your children come home from school. Responsibilities include: Food production, dish machine operation, cashiering, cleanup Assist with receiving orders, storage and inventory Assist Food Service Manager in planning and monitoring food production in a timely manner Completing food flow documentation reports Safety and Sanitation training provided Qualifications: Minimum eighth grade education Knowledge of sanitation and safety requirements in a quantity food service operation Ability to follow directions, read, write, and communicate in English Ability to effectively communicate with students, teachers, school administrators and other food service related personnel Completion of School Food Service New Employee Workshop within thirty (30) days of hire Send resumes to: sfsstaffing@palmbeachschools.org

5 Other Food Service Opportunities Production Assistant These positions work 6 to 7 hours per day and take on additional responsibilities to assist the Food Service Manager with the daily operation of the kitchen. They are still responsible for the tasks listed under the Food Service Assistant I, however, they also serve to lead the other staff members in carrying out the daily duties in the kitchen. They assist the manager with preparation of daily paperwork and computer operations. Once the applicant is hired into the Production Assistant position they must complete the Production Assistant Training Program. These positions are posted by the individual school as needed on the District s website through PeopleSoft. There are other positions within the School Food Service Department that periodically become available and provide opportunities for advancement for the Food Service Manager. All employees who work 6 or more hours per day are eligible to receive benefits such as pretax medical, dental, vision, employee basic life, disability, flexible spending accounts and the Florida Retirement System.
