3 Welcome to College in the High School Thank you for collaborating with Bellevue College and participating in our College in the High School (CHS) program! We are excited you have you on board to share this opportunity with your students. What is the College in the High School (CHS) Program? College in the High School is a partnership between local school districts and Bellevue College (BC). High school students simultaneously earn BC college credit while fulfilling their high school requirements by taking approved advanced high school courses. The courses are taught by qualified high school teachers who work closely with BC Faculty Coordinators to ensure the work that the students perform in the high school course is equivalent to the on-campus college course. How do Students Benefit from the Program? Students earn both college and high school credit for each CHS course taken. Credit earned can be applied to a Bellevue College degree or certification. Students can transfer credit to other colleges and universities (check with the college admissions office). Students save money! A 5-credit College in the High School course costs about one-third that of the tuition for the regular college course. Students have the opportunity for to challenge themselves and develop skills to excel academically. As an alternative to Running Start, students earn college credit without leaving their high school. In contrast to Advanced Placement courses, students who complete a College in the High School class have an official transcript record created at the college. Use of Bellevue College campus resources such as the Library, Academic Success Center and EdReady. Important Dates for NEW CHS student apply for admission starting October 2, Encourage your students to apply for admission as soon as possible. Processing can take a week to 10 days. RETURNING CHS students do not need to submit another application. 4 *NOTE: The registration close date is the date when registration forms and payments are due to the college! The CHS office will supply you with a pre-addressed, postage paid envelope or we can arrange for the registration forms and payments to be picked up by FedEx. Please advise your students and their parents that we will NO LONGER accept registration forms delivered directly to Bellevue College. Admission to Bellevue College As of last year, College in the High School students are required to apply for admission to the college as the first step in the registration process. It is important to let your students know: a) if they are taking a CHS course for the first time, they need to go through the admission process; b) if they have previously taken CHS courses or have earned college credit at Bellevue through one of our other dual enrollment programs, they do not need to apply for admission again. However, returning students will need to enter their Student ID (SID) number on the CHS registration form. If they do not remember their SID, they can go to Look Up Student ID (SID) This information is also available on the Bellevue College CHS website under Enrollment: Step 1: Apply for Admission Transfer Credit Completed course credit can be applied toward a degree or certificate at BC or transferred to other institutions. Depending on the institution and the student s program choice, credits may transfer as direct equivalents, as general electives, or they may satisfy a prerequisite for a required course. We strongly recommend the student contact the college or university they plan to attend to verify how these credits will be accepted. All of the public, four-year colleges/universities within Washington State have agreed to accept transfer credits from the CHS program. However, BC cannot guarantee whether the course(s) will meet a college/university s graduation requirements or be accepted by a specific academic department at the college/university. BC recommends that you contact the specific institution s admissions office and academic department for clarification. Students planning to attend a private college/university (either in Washington or out-of-state) should speak to the college/university admissions office to clarify whether these transfer credits will be accepted. Although it is uncommon for credits not to transfer, there have been some exceptions. Many colleges and universities provide the ability for students to view how BC credits transfer. From the college/university home webpage type in credit transfer equivalency in the search field. This will generally take you to their transfer equivalency tables and guidelines pages Using College Credit at Bellevue College If students have earned credit at Bellevue College through College in the High School, they will have a transcript record in the college database. If students plan to attend Bellevue after graduating from high school, they can attend an Information Session to learn more about BC s certificates and degrees. 4 Bellevue College College in the High School CHS HS Instructor Handbook 8/16/2017

6 Transfer Credit from Bellevue College If students plan to transfer credits to other colleges or universities, there is useful information located near the bottom of the Academic Advising webpage. Students can find answers to frequently asked transfer questions. How do Teachers Benefit from the Program? High school teachers benefit from the experience of teaching a college-level course and helping to prepare students for higher education. Each participating teacher works with a Bellevue College (BC) Faculty Coordinator who assists in the development of the college course curriculum development, assessment standards, pedagogy and philosophical orientation of the sponsoring division. CHS is the only dual credit program that provides opportunities for high school and college instructors to work side-by-side on curriculum and course development and participate in joint professional development. Steps for CHS Teacher and Course Approval Review the Bellevue College Course Catalog to determine if your course matches a college course. Review the minimum qualifications (below) for the subject area you are interested in. Submit initial documents for review to the Office of Instruction: Request to participate in College in the High School through Bellevue College (Application) (see appendix) Part-time Faculty Authorization Form (see appendix) Resume College Transcripts Recommendation Letter from Principal Course Description, Syllabus and List of Materials (textbook, etc.) The Office of Instructor will send materials to the CHS faculty coordination in your discipline. Faculty Coordinator will: Review materials to make sure they meet division standards for hiring adjunct faculty o Meet the WAC and NACEP Standards and Required Evidence Approve/deny admission to the program and attain approval of Dean If approved, set up initial meeting Work with instructor to plan: o Regular professional development o Classroom visits *BC Hiring Requirements for Adjunct Instructors, by Division: MATHEMATICS Bachelor s degree in mathematics or in a mathematical field with substantial mathematics coursework (i.e., engineering degree w/many, varied mathematics classes). Classroom Site Visit To ensure the quality of each CHS course is equivalent to the on campus course in curriculum, delivery, rigor, assessment and classroom management, it is required that BC Faculty Coordinators arrange a classroom site visit with each new CHS high school teacher. After the initial visit the Coordinator will schedule future classroom site visits based on the college schedule. Before the Visit The CHS High School Instructor should be prepared to share: course syllabus; teaching materials prepared for that class, such as handouts, assignments and homework due that day, teaching notes, slides or lesson/unit plan; and, samples of assignments and graded student work with personal information removed. During the Visit criteria to focus on Convey purpose of the class Cover class materials and activities Reinforce major course concepts Presentation pace and information coverage Cultural competence, inclusion and diversity Reaching multiple learning styles, using multiple means of representation, expression and engagement 8 Bellevue College College in the High School CHS HS Instructor Handbook 8/16/2017
