The qualification will assist students in acquiring the skills, attitudes and values required to operate responsibly in the banking sector. The general purpose of this qualification is to give students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in various subjects, such as economic fundamentals in the investment environment, banking advice, fundamental principles of accounting, business management, financial legislative requirements and investment planning. The South African banking sector is viewed as a world class, strong regulatory and supervisory environment, with adequate capital, technology and infrastructure, employing over people. There is a continuous drive in the sector to employ qualified individuals, or to upskill internal staff, based on the regulatory and supervisory requirements. Employment in the banking sector is highly sought after. The field has a strong professional image and offers a variety of opportunities for growth in an exciting and challenging, yet stable environment, with opportunities for international exposure. The National Certificate in Banking Services Advice appears on the Financial Services Board s (FSB) list of recognised qualifications for FAIS Fit and Proper purposes. In terms of this rating, the qualification is considered to be relevant to all product categories as a generic (G) qualification. Programme outcomes Apply knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in a career in the field of Financial Services. Understand the economic fundamentals in the investment environment. Demonstrate the ability to apply the fundamental principles of financial accounting. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of legislation applicable to financial services in the Banking sector. Show a basic understanding of investment planning in a South African context. Demonstrate a basic understanding and overview of a client needs analysis as well as applicable banking and insurance concepts. It focuses on the fundamental principles of basic accounting. Banking 1A (BANK1A 5) Financial Services have become a highly regulated industry. The purpose of this module is to provide students with a solid foundation in the legislation impacting on the banking environment. The content in this module is, to a large extent, shaped by the criteria and requirements set by the Financial Service Board for representatives in this industry. In addition, crucial aspects from the National Credit Act and other banking specific legislation are covered. Banking Advice (BSAA101) This module will provide students with the basic understanding required in order to complete a needs analysis for a client and to advise them on various banking products. It will also give students an overview of the Specific Code of Conduct for Short Term Deposit Business of the FAIS Act. It prepares students for the second level regulatory examination for long and short term deposits. Banking 1B (BANK1B 5) The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the discipline of banking and to basic banking products and services. Business Management (Introduction to Business Management) (BMAN1A 5) Business Management introduces students to the fundamental principles of management and the essential skills and competencies of effective management. Students are exposed to the primary management tasks: planning, organising, leading and controlling. Supporting management tasks, such as communication, motivation and delegation, are also covered. Students are also introduced to how these management competencies and tasks are applied across management functions; notably, operations, financial, marketing and human resources management. Economic Fundamentals (BECO01 5) The purpose of this module is to help students build basic knowledge in economics and to help them apply this knowledge in a sales situation with a client.

3 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A knowledge, comprehension and application of the English language at NQF level 4 (Grade 12 or equivalent level) is required. In order to determine the curriculum for which a student may register, the Milpark Education points system applies: If the student matriculated in 2007 or earlier Symbol Higher Grade Standard Grade A 8 6 B 7 5 C 6 4 D 5 3 E 4 2 F 3 1 For entry into the Certificate, applicants require a Senior Certificate or equivalent AND a minimum of 13 points on the Milpark points system. If the student matriculated in 2008 or later For entry into the Certificate, candidates require a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi. Foreign applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide proof of proficiency in English prior to admission to the qualification. Foreign students who do not hold a South African matric certificate must present a matric verification from the South African Matriculation Board on application. Milpark admits a small number of students onto its programme via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Applicants interested in applying via RPL will be considered individually by the relevant Dean. ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY Milpark provides students with materials, resources, formative assessments (including online tests and quizzes), discussion opportunities and a number of administrative services as part of the mymilpark and mycourses online tuition and support environments. Course materials contain links to additional external resources in the form of links to downloadable documents, websites and videos. Having access to the above online facilities is essential for efficient communication, learning and success. The student will need continuous (daily) access to study, using the resources mentioned above, and to submit and receive the assignments. Minimum system requirements: 1. STUDENT SUPPORT Library Access The Milpark Library now provides access to e books in a virtual library called Cyberlibris (Scholartext). Lecturers create smart bookshelves per course or module for students to access (these shelves can contain prescribed and recommended books). Students can also create their own personal smart bookshelves containing resources for their studies. Having access to a digital library means that thousands of students can access books and resources from anywhere at the same time online. There is no need to do reservations and requests, and no limit on the time a student has to access a book. With the implementation of Cyberlibris, students also have access to full text resources via Emerald (global), Ebsco (global) and Sabinet (South African publications) to assist with research and to enrich their learning experience. Access to the library is included in the module fee. Tutor Comprehensive student support services are available. Students are provided with administrative support by Student Services. Students have access to individual tutors whom they can contact individually who can help them to understand content. Students who experience study and/or personal problems have access to a student counsellor. All support services are available to registered students via mymilpark (mycourses). RULES OF PROGRESSION Students are required to complete five compulsory and one elective module. Students should complete at least one compulsory module before completing the elective module. Students require 120 credits to complete the qualification. There are no module prerequisites. ASSESSMENT Formative assessments contribute 30% to the final mark and consist of a combination of assignments and tests. The exact formative structure per module will be communicated to the student at the start of the semester. Students will write a final, summative assessment per module at the end of each semester, which contributes 70% towards the final mark. Students need to obtain a sub minimum mark of 40% in the final, summative assessment and an overall mark of 50% in order to pass the module. DURATION Full time contact learning students have one year to complete the qualification.

5 CERTIFICATION On successful completion of the qualification, the student will receive a National Certificate in Banking Services Advice, NQF Level 5 (credits: 120). The National Certificate: Banking Services Advice is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council for Higher Education (CHE). FURTHER STUDIES This programme is offered at NQF level 5 and will provide for articulation into an Advanced Certificate or Diploma at NQF level 6, as well as a BCom on NQF level 7. Milpark Education is committed to the process of lifelong learning and opening access to higher education. A student who transfers from one to another qualification within Milpark Education may be given credit for some modules successfully completed. Beyond Milpark Education, this qualification should articulate with other qualifications in the relevant fields of professional administration and office management. A student who has completed certain modules on this qualification at Milpark Education and who wishes to transfer to another tertiary level institution should be able to apply for exemption from relevant modules on the basis of the modules that have been passed at Milpark Education. PRICING All module fees include one round of formative and summative assessments (supplementary examinations for contact learning excluded). Contact fees include lectures. Module fees do not include the cost of prescribed textbooks, which will be for the student s own account. The prescribed book list will be available on mymilpark on registration.
