3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Located in the geographic center of southern Kentucky, Monroe County offers the natural beauty of the Upper Cumberland hills, as well as the hospitality and slower paced lifestyle typical of rural Kentucky serving approximately 300 students from two feeder schools Monroe and Metcalfe. Both schools enroll between students, with many receiving free/reduced lunch benefits, and the majority of students being Caucasian. Within the last three years we have experienced a drop in our population as business and manufacturing companies have closed their doors. Employment in Monroe County is primarily agricultural, timber, and related wood product manufacturing with some steel fabrication. Unique features about our community would be the numerous barbeques we have as well as being the marble playing capital of the world. The biggest challenge we are experiencing and engaging in to solve is the lack of jobs we have in our community for our students. Focused areas of improvement surround embracing networking opportunities with the local and surrounding communities in order to obtain resources and training for students that will lead to college and career readiness. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. The faculty and staff of Monroe County ATC are excited about the opportunity to serve the needs of all students pursuing technical education and skills training. As a student at the area technology center, one can obtain technical skills training that leads to a successful post high school transition. Training is provided in six technical programs. These programs include automotive technology, carpentry, electricity, health science, office technology, welding, and woods manufacturing. Each program at the ATC provides students with an opportunity to participate in a student organization. Recognized as an integral part of the technical education curriculum, career and technical student organizations provide a unique program of career and leadership development, motivation and recognition exclusively for secondary and post secondary students enrolled in technical education. Monroe County ATC is fortunate to have three active student organizations including Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and SkillsUSA. Page 3

Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. In the last three years the Monroe County ATC has receive a top 10 recognition for College and Career Readiness and received high scores on state program assessment. We have above averages of students passing Workkeys and our high school is currently identified as a distinguished high school for this school year. In the next three years we would like to increase our numbers for CCR. Page 4

At the Area Technology Center we strive to build relationships with students while providing hands on relevant instruction. We utilize a precise curriculum that meets both academic and technical standards. We instruct students while sharing with them the secret to success is preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. Our ATC staff and high school staff work together preparing students to be well rounded and prepared for future they desire and create. Page 5
