2 3 APPLICATION NARRATIVE SUBGRANT PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS AND DELIVERABLES The University of Nevada, Reno will carry out GEAR UP activities to ensure steady progress toward achievement of the four goals of the State of Nevada GEAR UP Project. The plan of operations will outline programing that will address the following goals: 1. To increase the academic performance, and preparation for postsecondary education for GEAR UP students. 2. To increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education of GEAR UP students 3. To increase GEAR UP students and families knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing. 4. To create a college-going culture in GEAR UP schools to ensure that all students have the opportunity, support, guidance, and information to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to apply for and succeed in postsecondary education. Plans for regular presence (Goal 1 and 2 and 4) The Ambassador will continue support for afterschool tutoring at local high school sites in order to provide academic support. This is done through partnerships among the College of Education, Washoe County Student Parent Involvement Facilitators (SPIF) and the UNR Ambassador office. With the addition of College 101 after school workshops, the Ambassador will partner with school Student Parent Involvement Facilitators and academic intervention programs to provide parents and students with information regarding academic support, college options and the importance of building resumes. The Ambassador will continue to emphasize the importance of academic achievement through presentations, workshops and by recognizing students for their academic achievement through the 3.0 celebrations. Career exploration will be emphasized whenever possible through the use of inventories such as Career Cruising, Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. New initiatives such as a Girls Group and Leadership Group will be introduced in the grant cycle. The University of Nevada, Reno near peer mentor will create a girls group at a target GEAR UP high school. This group will aim to empower high school girls to achieve emotional and economic security by graduating from high school and becoming the first in their family to attain a college degree. The group will provide year round programming and mentoring to develop character, leadership, self-confidence, and social consciousness, including the desire and ability to mentor others. In addition to this group the Ambassadors and SPIFs will partner to develop a Leadership Group which will meet monthly to develop GEAR UP programing. Those who attended the Nevada State Youth Leadership Summit, will be recruited to take part in developing the group. The Ambassador along with the Office for Prospective Students will continue to improve the College Corner in each GEAR UP school. Materials will be gathered from departments within UNR Student Services. Materials will be shipped or delivered in person, when possible. Along with a physical College Corner, the Ambassador will continue to maintain the GEAR UP online
3 4 College Corner with resource information regarding college preparedness, admissions, financial aid, GEAR UP Ambassador contact information, applicable events and programs, and downloadable presentations and videos for SPIFs, counselors, parents and students. The Ambassador will play an active role in organizing GEAR UP and College Application Weeks at target schools in order to increase college awareness and readiness. These weeks typically involve coordinating with the entire school so that the widest audience is made aware of the various higher education options. College Visits and Summer Programs (Goal 1 and 2) Along with tutoring, the Ambassador will continue to promote college readiness through college night presentations, college fairs and college visits. College visits will be tailored to the specific GEAR UP schools needs as directed by the SIPFs, and will provide students with a diverse experience with each visit. Summer programs will play a major role in helping students achieve their academic goals. Summer 2017 will look different from previous years. Since the GEAR UP cohort will be rising juniors and seniors, camps on the Nevada campus for rural students will be split by grade level in order to accommodate the seniors needs. Rising juniors will still have access to the STEM summer camp with a focus on college readiness, college terminology, and ACT prep. The seniors, though, will go through a much different program. Senior retreat will focus on preparing rising seniors for the college admission process. Students will write their personal statements, apply for colleges, and learn how to do the FAFSA, all while living on campus and meeting University of Nevada, Reno staff. Washoe County School District along with the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College, will combine all camps targeting WCSD students. Students will have the ability to participate in a week long overnight camp at Nevada and a dual credit class at TMCC. In addition to STEM and senior summer programing, the University of Nevada, Reno will once again be the host of the Nevada Youth Leadership Summit. The summit will target students from across Nevada in order for them experience leadership opportunities and gain knowledge to help their communities. This is a collaborative effort between UNR and the Nevada Department of Education. Furthermore, in partnership with UNR VEX Robotics Program/STEM and the UNR College of Engineering, the Ambassador program will develop an overnight engineering camps for rural areas. The First-Generation Engineering Camp will be an introductory camp with the purpose of increasing students interest in engineering fields. The Ambassador program will aid in recruiting students and providing culturally relevant curriculum. Financial planning and literacy (Goal 3) With the dramatic changes in FAFSA, especially the requirement that all courses covered by federal aid be degree applicable, there is a critical need to educate students and parents sooner and for increased emphasis on identifying an academic major. The Nevada and TMCC Ambassador will coordinate with SPIFs to conduct classroom visits in order to educate about the FAFSA. The Ambassador will continue to work with Wells Fargo, the University of Nevada s Financial Aid Office and UPromise to increase family and student knowledge of postsecondary education financing. The Ambassador will provide scholarship workshops to target schools as well as sending scholarship opportunities to SPIFs as such opportunities arise. The Ambassadors,
4 5 along with SPIFs, will take advantage of the 3.0 celebration in order to disseminate information about college admissions and college affordability. Key Personal To ensure success in this endeavor, the institution has created a carefully selected GEAR UP project team to research, design, manage, implement and assess direct service activities designed to meet measurable objectives related to the GEAR UP goals. As outlined in the Plan of Operation, the GEAR UP project team will focus most heavily on service delivery to Hug, Wooster and AACT high schools. This group will also focus on outreach to rural areas as designated by the GEAR UP grant. The GEAR UP project team is comprised of key leaders from departments within the Division of Student Service who have expertise in the areas essential to the successful achievement of the grant goals and objectives, including the implementation of activities and tasks outlined in the Plan of Operation. Project team members include leaders from the following departments: 1. Academic and Opportunity Support Services 2. Admissions 3. The Office for Prospective Students 4. Student Financial Aid and Scholarships 5. The Center for Student Cultural Diversity All personnel currently assigned to the project team have four or more years of professional experience in their areas of expertise related to early outreach, college preparedness, financial aid, and financial literacy, student matriculation from K-12 to postsecondary education, postsecondary education options, admissions, retention and graduation. The individuals are instrumental in the management of service delivery to students and parents and play a role in shaping institutional policies. Key project team members already collaborate with other institutions within Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), the NSHE administration offices, the Washoe County School District (WCSD), and personnel at the assigned GEAR UP high schools within WCSD. In addition to professional staff, the Near Peer Mentor will be assigned to target Washoe County schools. Statewide Program Benefit and Program Collaboration The Ambassador program will benefit the statewide program by providing highly trained individuals who will conduct outreach activities to GEAR UP schools statewide in unique ways. The Ambassador program has the opportunity to reach students in rural and at-risk areas that might have been neglected in the past. By providing a higher education presence at schools, the Ambassador is able to aid in creating a college going culture. The University of Nevada, Reno Ambassador grant was able to connect certain university departments with new schools in order to reach students in rural areas during the past service year and will continue to do so during the new grant year. The Plan of Operation provides multiple ways for cross-institutional collaboration. Through monthly College 101 workshops, leadership group meetings, and the girls group meeting,
5 6 Ambassadors and SPIFs in Washoe County will create an opportunity for other statewide and local Ambassadors to participate and share information regarding their institution. Through the summer programs conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Ambassador program will host many counties during an overnight camp. This camp provides an opportunity for all students across the state to stay on a university campus, learn about different STEM fields as well as build relationships with the different Ambassadors. The past two summers TMCC, Great Basin College, and Western Nevada College have all played an active role during the summer. The University of Nevada, Reno s Ambassador program prides itself on being able to connect GEAR UP schools and Ambassadors with one another in order to maximize students experiences and use funds most effectively.
