Goal 1 Strengthen Excellence in Disciplines Critical to National Stature Increase national ranking Current status: US News & World Report rankings - speech-language pathology graduate program number 10, audiology graduate program number 20 Five-year goal: Increase each ranking to top 5 Resources: Increase faculty strength through aggressive searches; increase grant & contract expenditures/facfte; maintain and increase number of graduate students; organize collaborative research; promote faculty career development Increase the number of tenure-track faculty Current status: 12 tenure-track faculty Five-year goal: Increase the number of tenure-track faculty to 15 Resources: Current search for a Department Head (a new position at the full-professor level); 2 tenure-track faculty hires at open rank through college initiative searches, Targets of Opportunity Program (TOP) hires, and Faculty Excellence hires. Five-year goal: Web-based interactions (virtual labs, once a week online assignments) used in 75% of large-lecture courses. 3 education, etc. Truly innovative, few if any other SHS programs in the country promote this broad-based undergraduate concentration. There are currently about 4 SHS majors in this concentration Five-year goal: Increase the number of SHS undergraduate majors enrolled in the Human Communication Science concentration to Resources: SHS faculty, instructors, and advisor, ALS Who s responsible: SHS and ALS Maintain and diversify undergraduate experiences in research Current status: 75% of graduating seniors in SHS report research as part of their undergraduate experience outside of class (UIUC 2005 Senior Survey) Five-year goal: Maintain undergraduate access to research experiences Resources: SHS faculty Increase service learning experiences for undergraduate students Current status: Undergraduate SHS majors can volunteer for service learning experiences aiding private businesses, such as home health care practices, nursing homes, and day care programs (e.g., Julie Hengst s communication partner program for homebound individuals and Joan Erickson s Language, Literacy, and Love program in preschool settings), but without academic credit Five-year goal: Develop and implement a service-learning course under an SHS or ALS rubric to provide students with academic credit for service learning Resources: SHS faculty, instructors, and Ph.D. students, instructors, students Broaden interdisciplinary exposure of SHS majors Current status: Many SHS majors have minimal direct exposure to other disciplines Five-year goal: Explore formation of teams of engineering, neuroscience, kinesiology, community health, and recreation, sport and tourism, and speech and hearing science students for joint projects to broaden interdisciplinary exposure of SHS majors. Resources: SHS faculty and staff, university faculty and staff Provide a new interdisciplinary, brain-based perspective on rehabilitation Current status: Undergraduate coursework in SHS that deals with rehabilitation is professional process based Five-year goal: Develop and implement a course that represents rehabilitation from the brainbased perspective of neuroplasticity Resources: SHS faculty Goal 3 Ensure Excellence in Graduate Education : Enhance interdisciplinary aspects of graduate coursework Current status: Interdisciplinary coursework (SHS/Special Education) offered in conjunction with a United Stated Department of Education (USDOE) training grant for Ph.D. students Five-year goal: Develop additional interdisciplinary graduate coursework with electrical and computer engineering (ECE); a new course, The Speech Chain, is to be offered by ECE faculty for 3

6 Goal 5 Enhance the Campus Work Environment Enrich campus-based childcare options Current status: No involvement in enriching campus-based childcare Five-year goal: Partner with campus and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District and the Research Park to provide language-enrichment, literacy, and speech-language and hearing services for infants and toddlers in a new facility also accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The facility would have dedicated space for faculty research and student training, and would improve the quality of child care of university employees and the community at large. Five-year goal: Increase the number of undergraduate majors to through aggressive recruiting of freshmen and transfers, as well as the aggressive marketing of the Human Communication Science concentration Resources: SHS faculty and staff, ALS staff and staff, ALS staff Increase the number of students outside of the college enrolled in SHS courses Current status: The percentage of undergraduate IUs taught to students from other colleges was 45% in FY2005, compared to 33% for students in the department; this percentage has been steadily increasing over the past 5 to 6 years from 8%; the proportion of 45% for SHS exceeds the mean for the campus which is about 28% Five-year goal: Continue to increase the number of students outside of the college enrolled in SHS courses, particularly those courses approved for General Education credit. 11 state (the University of Iowa, etc), hospitals (Carle), public schools (Champaign Unit 4), outside of the country (e.g., Sweden, Israel, England), and collaborators in Chicago (e.g., the University of Chicago and the UIC campus) Five-year goal: Enhance cooperation and natural synergistic areas with research groups in the area; formulate collaborative research proposals. For example, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield has a critical research cohort in the auditory system for agerelated hearing loss, ototoxicity, and tinnitus in basic science. Resources: SHS faculty Expand provision of speech and hearing services that supplement those provided to area children by local schools Current status: The Speech-Language Pathology Clinic and the Audiology Clinic provide services to school children from the area during the school year and during the summer; the speechlanguage summer camps provided intervention services to about 45 children Five-year goal: Continue the summer speech-language camps provided through the Speech- Language Pathology Clinic so that the services children receive in the public schools during the school year may continue in the summer; implement a children s summer writing lab for children with language impairments. For example, the Eye and Ear Infirmary for enhanced resources for cleft palate studies and cochlear implants, and the Department of Special Education for a children s writing project to access larger subject populations; make formal arrangement for Ph.D. students to spend more time on the UIC campus for enhanced clinical and research opportunities. Seek out corporate funding An assumption is that efforts on the part of the department in cooperation with the ALS Development office will increase the amount of funding from corporate sources. Seek out alternate external research sponsors An assumption is that efforts on the part of the department to identify and work with alternate research sponsors will increase the amount of funding from external research sponsors other than NIH Allocation of Resources Resources will be allocated to support the research enterprise of the department in the form of new tenure-track faculty hires, the renovation of research and clinical spaces in the SHS Building, and the support and recruitment of students. 13
