2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) engages Tennessee's private colleges to work collaboratively in areas of public policy, cost containment, and professional development to better serve the state and its citizens. Background For over 200 years, private colleges have been serving the Volunteer state. In 1956, the precursor of The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) was established to promote better cooperation among private institutions throughout the state of Tennessee. TICUA is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of member college presidents and corporate and civic leaders. Daily activities are coordinated by an eight member staff. TICUA engages Tennessee's private colleges and universities to work collaboratively in areas of public policy, cost containment, and professional development to better serve the state and its citizens. The association counts among its membership each independent, non-profit, regionally accredited college and university in Tennessee with a traditional arts and science curriculum. 3 Programs Programs Advocacy Description Population Served TICUA engages Tennessee's private colleges and universities to work collaboratively on public policy issues. TICUA staff work closely with the Tennessee General Assembly to highlight the legislative priorities of Tennessee s private colleges and universities for each upcoming legislative session. TICUA's priorities focus on the educational, economic and social impact of the state s private colleges and universities. Adults, Young Adults (20-25 years) -- currently not in use, Youth/Adolescents only (14-19 years) Research Description Category Population Served The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Univerisites Association (TICUA) conducts research at the institutional level that is used for planning purposes by our member institutions. In addition, we conduct research at the state and national levels to support the development of public policy issues, and to understand the impact these issues will have on private colleges and universities. Education Postsecondary Education Young Adults (20-25 years) -- currently not in use, Youth/Adolescents only (14-19 years), Professional Development Description TICUA engages Tennessee's private collegs and universities in professional development activities throughout the state. The professional development opportunities provided by TICUA are in response to needs by TICUA's membership, and the current needs of the profession. In the past, TICUA has held professional development opportunities for several TICUA member instituiton staff, including: academic officers, information technology directors, physical plant officers, library directors, chief financial officers, and enrollment officers. Population Served Adults,, Communications Description TICUA works closely with state, business, and higher education leaders, as well as member institutions to advocate for private colleges and universities throughout the state. TICUA's communications strategy focuses on the benefit that private higher education provides to the future economic and social well-being of all Tennesseans. Population Served Adults,, 3

In recruiting board members, there is an effort to have university executives and corporate/community members from the 3 regions of Tennessee. 6

7 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start Jan Dr. Claude O. Pressnell Jr. Experience Claude, a native Kansan, has spent nearly 20 years in higher education administration. He began his career at Southwest Baptist University in Missouri as the Director of Admissions and Marketing and quickly gained the additional responsibility of the Student Affairs division. He holds a doctorate in Higher Education Administration/Educational Leadership from Vanderbilt University. While attending Vanderbilt he served as the Director of Financial Assistance and Assistant Professor of Religion at Belmont University. After this he served as the Founding Executive Director of the Institute for Family Studies, Executive Director of the Tennessee Foundation for Independent Colleges, and since 2000 has served as President of TICUA. In 2003 the United States Senate appointed Pressnell to the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. The Committee serves as an independent source of advice and counsel to the United States Congress and the Secretary of Education on student aid issues. He currently serves as an international advisor on higher education reform in the Balkan region of Europe. He also serves on the Strategic Planning Team for the University of Prishtina, Kosovo.
