1 CTH Level 4 Diploma in Hospitality Management (QCF) Objective CTH Level 4 aims to provide understanding of the operational aspects of the international hotel industry and knowledge of the underlying principles involved by combining practical career-based elements with a number of essential underpinning management disciplines. This course is an ideal preparation for immediate employment in the sector. Alternatively students may use it as a pathway to advanced study, typically progressing on to the CTH Level 5 Diploma. Since the Level 4 Diploma is designed to be broadly equivalent to that of the first year of a bachelor s degree, students may also use the qualification to apply for credit entry to a number of bachelor degree programmes at selected universities worldwide. Syllabus Overview RDO Rooms division operations RDS Rooms division supervision FBO Food and beverage operations FBS Food and beverage supervision EFTH Essentials of finance in tourism and hospitality CSMTH Customer service management in tourism and hospitality GTH Global tourism and hospitality Mode of Delivery The programme is delivered through classroom lectures, group and individual assignments, case studies, in-class exercises and industry visits where appropriate. Duration Full time 6 months (Theory) Monday to Friday, 3 hours per session Part time 10 months (Theory) 3 days a week, 3 hours per session 6 months (Industrial Attachment) 44 hours per week
2 Industrial Attachment for international students is not guaranteed as a training work permit is required to undertake the on the job training. The application for training work permit is subject to approval by the Ministry of Manpower. Entry Requirements To be eligible for admission to CTH Level 4 Diploma in Hospitality Management (QCF), you must be at least 16 years old at the time of application meet the minimum academic qualification and English standard listed in table below: Country Academic Qualification English Standard Singapore Obtain at least a C6 at GCE 'O' Levels in any three subjects or equivalent At least a C6 at GCE 'O' Level English or equivalent Brunei GCE 'O' Level Grade 7 China Year 11 or Year 12 (Gao Er or Gao San) 70% India Secondary School Certificate 55% Indonesia Middle School (SMP) Grade 7 Malaysia Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) Grade 6 Myanmar Basic Education High School Certificate 55% Nepal School Leaving Certificate 55% Philippines High School Diploma 75%
3 Sri Lanka GCE 'O' Level Pass Vietnam Year If your academic qualification or English standard is not listed in the table above, your application will be assessed by the Academic Manager based on its equivalence to Level 3 QCF and English proficiency level of IELTS 5.5. Mature candidates of at least 21 years of age with minimum of 3 years work experience may also apply. Learning Outcomes RDO Rooms division operations This module covers understanding rooms division operations (front office and housekeeping departments), front office processes and housekeeping operations. RDS Rooms division supervision This unit covers evaluating the effectiveness of rooms division operations (front office and housekeeping departments), supervising housekeeping operations, supervising housekeeping operations and managing the performance of staff. FBO Food and beverage operations This unit covers understanding the principles of food production operations, food production operations and food and beverage service. FBS Food and beverage supervision This unit covers evaluating the effectiveness of food and beverage operations, developing food and beverage operations, understanding how to arrange banquets and functions, understanding how to supervise the purchasing and storage of food and beverages and the management of staff performance. EFTH Essentials of finance in tourism and hospitality This unit aims to introduce students to the essentials of finance in tourism and hospitality. Students will understand the key principles for controlling finance, how to interpret financial statements and the use of IT to support financial management in the tourism and hospitality industry. CSMTH Customer service management in tourism and hospitality This unit covers the management of customer service operations, managing the resolution customers
4 queries and complaints, analysing the effectiveness of customer service in hospitality or tourism and understanding the use of quality systems in the tourism and hospitality industry. GTH Global tourism and hospitality This unit covers understanding the size and scope of the global tourism and hospitality industry, the food and accommodation sub-sectors it, the issues and influences affecting it and the growth of global tourism and hospitality brands. IA Industrial Attachment The aim of the Industrial Attachment is to expose students to a professional working environment where they can learn through real-world experiences. After completing theoretical components of hospitality service, students get to fully comprehend the service encounter through hands-on learning The workplace assessment forms a critical part of the overall assessment for the course and assesses three modules: Rooms Division Supervision Food and Beverage Supervision Customer Service Management in Tourism and Hospitality Industrial Attachment The Industrial Attachment provides you the opportunity to undergo 6 months internship in the hospitality or tourism industry. Typical establishments range from small businesses such as restaurants, boutique hotels and travel agencies through to large, globally recognised hotel chains. A training work permit is required to undertake the Industrial Attachment. The application for training work permit is subject to approval by the Ministry of Manpower. Progression Opportunities Diploma in Hospitality Management After you have successfully completed the CTH Level 4 Diploma, you can progress onto the CTH Level 5 Diploma. Students can pay both their course and miscellaneous fees directly into 'Boston Business School Pte Ltd' DBS Account No through any of the following methods: SGD crossed cheque SGD cash Cashier's order Bank draft Telegraphic transfer NETS 2 Miscellaneous fees are non-compulsory and non-standard fees which are paid only when necessary or applicable. 3 All fees are in Singapore dollars and are subject to 7% Goods and Services Tax.
7 Assessment CTH sets and marks the assessment for the examination. You are allowed two and a half hours for the Level 4 Diploma examination. CTH Diploma examination is held 5 times a year in January, March, June, September and November. Module Assessment Weightage Unit Rooms Division Operations Rooms Division Supervision Food and Beverage Operations Food and Beverage Supervision Essentials of Finance in Tourism and Hospitality Customer Service Management in Tourism and Hospitality Global Tourism and Hospitality Assessment Method Assignment Work-based Assessment or Assignment Assignment Work-based Assessment or Assignment Closed book written examination Work-based Assessment or Assignment Assignment Graduation Criteria You will be awarded the Level 4 Diploma in Hospitality Management by CTH if you achieve at least a Pass grade in all modules of the examination. Grade structure: Distinction Merit Pass Fail below 40 How to Apply Local students refer to Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and foreigners who hold a valid pass other than a Student Pass, for example, dependent pass, social visit pass, work pass, etc. International students refer to foreigners who hold a valid Student Pass issued by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
8 Step 1 Attend and acknowledge pre-course counselling service from BBS staff or authorised education agents. Step 2 Complete and sign the application form and provide the following documents to support your application: Copy of NRIC / Passport Copies of all educational certificates and transcripts Proof of English language proficiency Proof of employment history (if any) One passport-size photograph Note: An official translation is required if documents are not in English Step 3 It takes 2 to 7 working days to process your application. If your application is successful, you will receive an Offer of Admission letter together with the following documents Advisory Note to Students Student Contract If you are an international student, acceptance to the course is subject to the approval of your Student Pass by ICA. Also, a training work permit is required to undertake the industrial attachment. The application for training work permit is subject to approval by MOM. Step 4 If you wish to accept the offer, you must complete, sign and send back 1 copy of the Advisory Note to Students and the Student Contract. If we do not receive your completed and signed documents within the timeline stated in your Offer of Admission letter, it will be assumed that you do not wish to accept the offer and the offer will be deemed withdrawn.
9 Appeal Against Rejection If your application is rejected, you can submit an appeal in writing to the Academic Manager/Principal within 7 working days from the date of rejection to have the outcome of your application reviewed by the Academic Board. You will be notified about the outcome of your appeal within 7 working days from the date of appeal. The decision of the Academic Board is final. If your appeal is unsuccessful, we may recommend that you pursue an alternative course of study. Student Pass New Application for Student Pass If you are an international student, you must apply for a Student Pass to study full-time in Boston Business School. You must submit your application to Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) through the Student Pass Online Application & Registration (SOLAR+) system at least two months prior to course commencement date. It takes about 4 to 6 weeks to know the outcome of your application. You are not required to be present in Singapore while your application is being considered. If approved, you would receive an in-principle approval letter (IPA) for Student Pass and a single-journey entry visa to enter and stay up to 30 days in Singapore. To collect your Student Pass card, you must visit ICA and bring along the following documents: In-principle approval letter from ICA Passport Embarkation/disembarkation card SOLAR+ e-forms Medical report Duly completed security bond form and a security deposit in the form of banker s guarantee Renewal of Student Pass If you require an extension of the Student Pass to continue the same course, you must submit a renewal application to ICA at least 2 weeks prior to the expiry of the current Student Pass. Cancellation of Student Pass You are required to surrender your Student Pass for cancellation within 7 working days from the date of cessation or termination of your study. Important Notes to Student Pass Holders International students must abide by the following rules and regulations under which the Student Pass is issued by ICA: The Student Pass is issued to you for the purpose of studying in a particular course with BBS.
10 You must carry your Student Pass at all times. It is the Schools responsibility to inform ICA if you fail to attend classes for a continuous period of 7 days or more without valid reason, or where your attendance falls below 90% in any month of the course without valid reason, or if you have completed the course or wish to terminate your studies with the School. ICA will cancel your Student Pass under any of the above mentioned circumstances. You are strictly prohibited from working in Singapore, even if it does not involve any payment to you. You must strictly observe all laws, rules and regulations of Singapore. You cannot be adopted by any Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident while being a Student Pass holder. You cannot be married to a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident while being a Student Pass holder. You are not allowed to overstay in Singapore after the Student Pass has expired, unless with written approval from ICA.
