2 Upward Bound Cultural Trip San Francisco Clovis Community College Upward Bound The Clovis Community College TRiO Upward Bound Program is a federally funded college preparatory program that is designed to assist high school students who have the ability and desire to go on to college. Upward Bound gives high school students opportunities to learn, first-hand, what college life is all about and helps the students develop those skills necessary to succeed in college. The program emphasizes reading, writing, math, science, foreign language, and study skills. The program also provides opportunities for personal, social, and cultural enrichment. To qualify for the Upward Bound program, students must meet the following criteria:! Must be enrolled in the 9 th or 10 th grade at the Freshman Academy or at Clovis High School;! Must be a potential first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a four-year college degree) and/or must meet the U.S. Department of Education low income guidelines;! Must show academic need for Upward Bound services;! Must have interest in furthering education beyond high school;! Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Trip Each year Upward Bound requires a senior cultural trip for graduating seniors. The seniors visit college campuses and educational places! The senior group works hard all year long filling out two FAFSA S, numerous scholarships and listening to Mrs. Jamie Moncure prepare them for college! Additionally the

3 students will miss no school as the trip takes place on spring break. This trip not only gives the students a chance to travel, they are provided with cultural experience and campus visits. This year Upward Bound Seniors would like permission to travel to San Francisco, CA. NUMBER OF STUDENTS Upward Bound has eight high school seniors who are active members of the Clovis Community College TRiO Upward Bound Program and are eligible to participate in the San Francisco Cultural Trip. To be eligible, these students have to apply for college admissions, submit a FAFSA in order to attend the Upward Bound Summer Bridge Program at Clovis Community College, and submit a FAFSA for the fall semester at their selected college or university. All this must be done by February 29, 2016.These students have shown full participation in the last three years of the program. A Formal Invitation Packet and Parent Permission Slip has been given to each senior. With permission, the seniors will attend the trip from March 28 through March 31, Total Students: 8 Chaperones There will be two chaperones on the trip with the students. These include: 1. Jamie Moncure, CCC Upward Bound Director 2. Joseph Madrid, CCC Upward Bound Specialist Jamie Moncure is the Upward Bound Director and has been background checked through both CMS and CCC. Joseph is the Upward Bound Specialist for Clovis Community College. He has had a background check by Clovis Community College and CMS.

4 Travel Arrangements The group will travel together to San Francisco by airplane. The group will leave out of Lubbock, Texas and fly to San Francisco. Once there, the group will travel around by a small bus company. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation to and from the Lubbock Airport. Hotel Information Lodging is to be determined. The hotel will include breakfast and be in a safe location close to San Francisco. The boys will share a room and the girls will share rooms. Financing This trip will be paid for by the Clovis Community College TRiO Upward Bound Program, which is a federally-funded grant program. The Upward Bound grant provides students with a fun, educational trip that is cost free to them! College Visits We will be touring Stanford and San Francisco State. Each college tour will depict the schools academics, admission, and activities. We will be eating in the school s cafeteria and touring the dorms for an insight of what college living feels like. Stanford: We will be touring Stanford University! The school's main campus is located on a 55-acre setting between the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. The main campus is nicknamed the "The Hilltop", and part of the main campus is located on Lone Mountain, one of San Francisco's major hills. This is an amazing campus for the students to see!!! San Francisco State: Also, we will tour San Francisco State University, a public comprehensive university located in San Francisco, California, United States. As part of the 23-campus California State University system, the university offers 118 different Bachelor's degrees, 94 Master's degrees, 5 Doctoral degrees including two Doctor of Education, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a

5 Ph.D in Education and Doctor of Physical Therapy Science, along with 26 teaching credentials among six academic colleges. Alcatraz Tour and San Francisco All Loops Bus Tour Upward Bound will tour one of San Francisco s most famous landmarks, Alcatraz. For almost 150 years, Alcatraz has given the innocent chills and the guilty cold sweats. Over the years it's been the nation's first military prison, then a forbidding maximum-security penitentiary, now a National Park. The roster of Alcatraz inmates read like an America's Most Wanted list. A-list criminals doing time on Alcatraz included Chicago crime boss Al "Scarface" Capone. Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise: In addition to a land tour, UB will complete our visit to San Francisco with Blue & Gold Fleet s one-hour Bay Cruise Adventure. We will sail underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz and past Angel Island on this fully-narrated tour offering breathtaking views. Aquarium of the Bay At the Bay Aquarium students will see eye-to-eye with sharks. Be mesmerized by jelly fish. The aquarium offers giant tunnels to explore, surrounded by 20,000 marine animals and provides the ability to discover San Francisco Bay through hands-on science. Located at the water s edge, 20,000 local sea creatures await you. The visit will take the students through three main exhibit areas that display the amazing riches that lie beneath the surface of the San Francisco Bay and surrounding waters. Exploratorium Students will embrace the wild wonder at the intersection of science and art at the Exploratorium, the most experimental museum in the world. They will touch, tinker and play with more than 600 interactive exhibits and immerse yourself in San Francisco s independent, innovative culture. At the

6 Exploratorium, students can view learning broadly and believe there are different ways of learning. Muir Woods & Sausalito Tour We will drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and through the coastal mountains to the Bay Area's most popular national monument - Muir Woods. Roam through an ancient forest of giant redwood trees and stroll the waterfront of the quaint Mediterranean-style village of Sausalito (considered the prettiest city in California). Great views of the Bay are featured with time for shopping and photo-taking. Pier 39 We will be visiting Pier 39, one of San Francisco s oldest landmarks. Pier 39 is a popular tourist attraction built on a pier in San Francisco, California. At Pier 39, there are shops, restaurants, street performances, the Aquarium of the Bay, views of California sea lions hauled out on docks on Pier 39's marina. A two-story carousel is one of the pier's more dominant features. The familyoriented entertainment and presence of marine mammals make this a popular tourist location for families with kids. The pier is located at the edge of the Fisherman's Wharf district and is close to North Beach, Chinatown, and the Embarcadero. The area is easily accessible via the historic F Market streetcars. Conclusion I would like to ask Clovis Municipal Schools for permission to take eight Upward Bound Seniors to San Francisco from March 28, March 31, The students will be travelling on spring break and will not miss any class. This cultural trip is a great opportunity for the students to explore a location they have never had the opportunity to see. They will also have the opportunity to visit two colleges.
