3 Summary Fiscal Year Utah Valley University saw steady increases in the number of internships for FY During this period, the total number of internships increased 13% when excluding Aviation Science, Automotive Technology, and Building Construction & Construction Management majors which represent industries severely affected by the economic recession. Over the last two years these three majors lost 435 internships while the rest of the university experienced steady growth. Highlights Accomplishments A total of 771 new internship opportunities were created and posted on the UV Job Board (134% increase from last year). An Internship Coordinator was added to the Office of Internship Services. A promotional DVD was filmed and distributed throughout campus. Employer contacts for the year totaled 2,135 (a 128% increase over last year). The Student Ambassador Program was initiated resulting in 356 employer contacts and 129 internship hires. Relationships were developed with notable employers such as Goldman Sachs, Novell, Utah Community Credit Union, Utah Governor s Office, and IM Flash for placement of UVU interns. The online internship orientation was made mandatory for all students registered for internships at UVU. Internship Services assisted a total of 2,584 students. The website for Internship Services was completely redesigned. Washington, D.C. Internship Program Within the last four years Internship Services has developed a successful internship program in Washington, D.C. Madelyn Tucker English Literature Major Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Washington, D.C. This year, eleven UVU students completed internships at the nation s capital. Locations included the offices of Senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett, the office of Congressman Jason Chaffetz, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and Pal-Tech. Five of those students participated in the UVU subsidized housing program in D.C. Relationships have been built with various agencies in the D.C. area to provide internship opportunities for students in nearly all majors. 4 5

5 Institute of Professional Engagement The Office of Internship Services partnered with local non-profit agencies and the Institute of Professional Engagement (IPE) to facilitate the placement and funding of salaries for 11 students completing internships with need-based organizations. Some of the organizations included Welcome Baby, Community Action Services & Internship Scholarships A total of 65 scholarships were awarded through Internship Services this year. IPE 7 students, $6,000 Government 30 students, $27,125 General 28 students, $12,500 Internship Services, in conjunction with the Philosophy & Humanities Department, placed and funded 12 UVU interns in offices of locally elected officials. Students were paid a salary up to $2,500 through a grant obtained by the UVU Center for the Study of Ethics. Students receiving scholarships and grants completed their internships with organizations such as: Utah Division of Child & Family Services 4th District Court Utah County Sheriff s Office Utah Governor s Office Attorney General s Office U.S. Postal Inspection Service Utah Division of Wildlife Services Salt Lake City Mayor s Office Steppenwolf CSU Summer Arts Intermountain Healthcare Alpine & Nebo School Districts Glycosan Biosystems Leading Edge Aviation Metrix BPM Food Bank, United Way of Utah County and the Family Support & Treatment Center. Seven students were awarded scholarships through the Institute of Professional Engagement to assist with unpaid internships at Centro Hispano, Signs of Hope International, Kids on the Move, March of Dimes and the Work Activity Center. Internship Testimonial Contest During the 2009 fall semester, Internship Services held its first Internship Testimonial Contest. Five students were awarded a $50 gift certificate for their internship testimonials. 6 Trends Internship Growth All university programs show a steady increase in internships with the exception of the College of Technology and Computing, which still suffers from recessions in (See Fig. 6) industries related to these majors. The most significant loss in numbers came from the Aviation Science program. The largest percentage of growth took place within Interdisciplinary Studies, Integrated Studies and University College (241%). The College of Humanities and Social Sciences experienced the greatest increase in number of students, with the Woodbury School of Business running a close second. The College of Technology and Computing continued to exhibit the largest number of total internships for the university. 1 Several disciplines throughout the university made internships a mandatory part of their curriculum, which significantly contributed to the total number of internships in those majors. The Omnibus Survey of 2009 conducted by UVU Institutional Research found the main reasons students give for not completing an internship are either 1) internships are not required by their major or 2) students do not have the time or the funds to complete an internship. The number of employers posting internships on the UV Job Board for the first time was 147 in , 118 in and 187 in This represents a 58% increase for over the previous year.
