5 Course Registration Workload Canadian Immigration Law : All international students must keep a full-time status : B.B.A. minimum 4 courses 12 HEC credits M.Sc. minimum 3 courses 9 HEC credits Check with your home university: The number of courses you are required to take If language courses can be credited Only 1 language course (3 credits) allowed per semester

6 Course Registration Language Courses Today = last day to register to the written online placement test. Sign up on HEC en ligne using the following course codes: French: 5013 English: 4470 Spanish: 4472 You will have access to the online test on zone cours 24 hours later. You have to complete the test by Friday 29 th. A step by step guide is available on the course registration webpage. Cancellation through HEC en ligne

7 Course Registration First week of class During the first week of class: Attend all courses that you have registered for Go to the first class even if you are on a waiting list After the first week of class: Drop the courses you do not need or do not want This will give the place to someone who is on a waiting list! Last chance to swap courses! If on a waiting list: Go to the first class If a place opens up, you will automatically be registered. Check your HEC en ligne regularly! You cannot swap or add a course during or after the second class.

8 Course Registration Deadlines Add / Swap / Drop HEC Montréal is strict about deadlines no exceptions will be allowed! Add or Swap a course deadline: Before the second class of a course Drop a course deadlines: The course will NOT appear on the final transcript if dropped: before September 15th The course WILL appear on your final transcript with the grade «AB» (abandon) if dropped: between September 15th to november 18th If you drop a course after November 18th : Grade «F» (Fail) on your final transcript It will have a huge impact on your overall grades.

11 Zone Cours Mobile Application Course Registration Available for ios and Android only. NOT AVAILABLE on App Store and Android Market. Most be downloaded manually. Procedure to download the application: 1. From your mobile phone browser, open 2. Enter your student ID and PW (Same as HEC en ligne) 3. Chose your operating system (ios or Android) 4. Download & open the application

15 Academic Culture To Succeed Before each course To succeed Everything has to be read and prepared before class Professors expect a high degree of integration of theories in case analysis, discussions and workshops Bringing additional material is always appreciated Attend all classes and exams (mandatory) Inform your professors that you are an exchange student Study regularly Don t be afraid to ask questions!

16 Academic Culture Professors Assistance Do not hesitate to seek the professor s assistance: Quick and informal discussions during the break or immediately before or after class are common Formal appointment if you need longer discussions Note It s your responsibility to go forward if you need assistance. Your professors can t guess if you have difficulties, but they would be happy to help.

17 Academic Culture Communication Tips Professors are willing to help and guide students about fundamental issues. They will communicate with you through: Zone Cours and your HEC webmail Check them regularly! Remember that professors won t Do basic tasks for you Give you all the answers Do not expect to receive assistance if you ask at the last minute!

18 Academic Culture Professors Expectations Punctuality is very important Mobile phones OFF Proper usage of Internet NO Facebook during class Wait for the break if you need to go out of the classroom During the course: Participation is encouraged Open discussions are the norm Respect of other students

19 Academic Culture Teamwork Teamwork is essential at HEC Montréal Team building (other exchange or local students) Be there and participate Do the work you are supposed to do Ask for regular feedback from teammates Achieve consensus Be organized and expect to invest many hours outside the classroom for meetings, readings and assignments. Don t forget : 1 credit = 2 hours of work out of class

20 Academic Culture Grading System Each course has its own weighting system Mid-terms Class participation Quiz Individual or team assignments Final exams Grading system Mark Range (%) Grade (A+ to F) Overall GPA on 4.3

21 Academic Culture Exams Mid-Term & Final Exams No resits possible No home exams can replace an exam (mid-term, Final) Be aware of plagiarism Student ID card is mandatory for taking exams Exams are NOT at the same time and place as regular classes. Check HEC en ligne for the exact schedule and classroom!

22 Academic Culture Exams Business Courses given in French: Writting exams in English Ask your teacher at the beginning of the semester Dictionaries Language dictionaries are allowed if French is not your first language, but they need to be approved Calculators Certain calculators are allowed but need to be approved Additional information will be provided before mid-term

23 Academic Culture Books Wait before purchasing anything. Teachers will precise which books are MANDATORY during the first course. Look for FREE Online versions! 24 Plagiarism Academic Culture Always clarify your sources when you quote the work of someone else. Academic integrity is one of HEC Montréal s core values, which the school makes every effort to defend and promote Academic violations, examples: Glancing at another student s exam, Using prohibited documentation during an exam or quiz, Failing to reference or quote. A zero tolerance policy is applied in case of plagiarism

25 Academic Culture Final Transcript Your transcript will be sent directly to your university by mid-march. It is not possible to receive a transcript with your marks in percentages. Contact your home university to know if and how your grades will be converted. Your grades will be available on HEC en ligne
