12 UEMS policies CPD contributes to improving the quality of patient care CPD is essential for ensuring that medical specialists remain up-to-date with scientific and medical progress CPD is a moral and ethical obligation for all doctors There is no evidence to support the need for mandatory, rather than voluntary, CPD

14 Statement on article 22 of PQD (2005/36/EC) It is essential, in order to ensure patient safety and effective practice, to establish a dialogue on continuing professional development (CPD) within the EU for the purpose of optimising Member States CPD systems. To achieve this, the EU must establish a network to support harmonisation and co-operation between Member States to: - exchange information on, and best practice in, CPD - promote CPD to ensure patient safety and the safe and effective practice of health professionals.
15 CME-CPD in European legislation? This is the first time that EU legislation has addressed the subject of CPD The UEMS welcomes such developments, and the recognition by EU institutions of the importance of CPD
