6 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany University. These binational Bachelor programmes are divided equally between two uni versities (one in Germany and one in France) and lead to a double degree. For more information, please see: Germany is ranked third behind the USA and UK as the favourite destination for international students, and international students usually do not have to pay tuition fees, so it was an easy decision for me to study in Germany. Studying engineering at the HAW Hamburg means that I do lots of projects and lab work as well as an internship, so I feel I am being very well prepared for my future career. The university also awarded me a scholarship, which really helps me focus on my studies. Please refer to our website ( international-programmes) for more detailed information on degree programmes, application procedures, academic departments, on-campus facilities, and other topics. Take that first step today, and soon you could be studying in Germany! Anthony Omiunu from Nigeria is studying for a BSc in Information Engineering at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg).

Introduction 7 Bachelor degree programmes: International success Made in Germany In demand all over the world Germany has a long history of welcoming international students from around the globe. The reputation for academic excellence enjoyed by so many German universities makes it easy to see why a great number of international students choose to pursue their education in Germany. Every year, more than 340,000 students from all over the world study at a third-level institution. Germany boasts more than 400 institutions of higher education offering applicants a choice of approx. 8,500 Bachelor programmes and 8,400 Master programmes. In response to an ever-changing business environment and scientific challenges, universities are constantly developing new programmes, for instance, software engineering in health care. The internationalisation of industry increasingly calls for qualified personnel with foreign language skills, with the result that more and more internationally oriented courses are being offered in Germany. In addition to -language programmes, students at German universities can study in other foreign languages such as French, Chinese, and Spanish. Even if knowledge of the German language is not compulsory for admission to these programmes, many students take German classes and learn the language over the course of their studies. Most German universities offer assistance to international students so that they can settle in quickly and make friends. This is made easier by the fact that unlike in some other countries, German and foreign students attend the same courses. Up-to-date, flexible, international A restructuring of the German higher education system to the two-tier degree system is now nearing com pletion. Prior to the Bologna reform, German students earned either a Diplom or a Magister, with students usually taking more than eight semesters to complete one of the two degrees. With the now widely established Bachelor degree system, students not only embark on a professional career earlier often after six semesters, they also find it easier to have their degrees recognised abroad. Prospective lawyers, doctors, and pharmacists in Germany do not yet earn degrees according to the Bologna reform and are still educated in preparation for a state examination conducted at the end of their

8 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany studies. However, the study process in these fields is also expected to be replaced with some variation of the Bachelor and Master system in due course. Foreign students in Germany benefit greatly from the ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System. This facilitates credit transfers across institutions and across countries. Most Bachelor degrees today are modular, based on the credit points system. All courses taught be they lectures, tutorials, seminars, etc. count as parts of the modules. Students who pass the examinations in the modules are awarded credit points. Once they have earned a given number of credit points, they can write a Bachelor thesis, an independent piece of academic work demonstrating the student s ability to apply scientific thinking and methodology. Fast track to a great career Internships with local corporations or abroad in your field of study give you practical, relevant experience that not only enhances your résumé, but also provides you with an opportunity to determine if your chosen field is the right one for you. Most Bachelor programmes require internships and offer credits for them. In Germany, strong collaboration has traditionally existed between universities and business enterprises. This gives students the opportunity to put their skills to the test, to transfer theoretical ideas into practical projects, and to implement research in a real-world environment. Theory or practice? In Germany, there are different types of higher education institutions, and a lot of degree courses are offered both by universities and by universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschule/FH, or Hochschule/ HS). The question of where you should study depends on your own personal preferences. At a university, research and teaching are closely linked. University programmes are traditionally more theoretical and are a good choice for those seeking to pursue a scientific career. At the same time, references to real-world applications of theory and research remain constantly visible. The spectrum of subjects is broad, incorporating medicine, law, the humanities, the natural sciences, and economics / business. Close research networks and intensive cooperation with uni ver sities in Germany and abroad provide you with diverse opportunities to make a contri bution to shaping research in your own right. Universities of applied sciences are also an essential element of Germany s higher education system, driving the development and establishment of new products and services. Their strong focus on training ensures that young academics receive instruction with a practical orientation, particularly in, but not limited to, the field of engineering. Universities of applied sciences perform problemoriented research, often in cooperation with regional and, increasingly, with supra-regional industry. Then there are the technical uni ver sities, called Technische Universitäten or Technische Hochschulen, which are

Introduction 9 special ised universities of applied sciences. As their name suggests, they focus on engineering and the natural sciences. Their range of subjects is complemented by courses in business and economics, for example. The nine largest of these technical universities have come together to form what is known as the TU9 alliance ( A wide range of subjects, many different degrees The higher education institutions in this brochure offer several different degree titles: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng). While in other countries the difference often lies in whether the programme focuses more on practice (BSc) or on academia and general education (BA), in Germany the final degree is usually determined by the subject: A Bachelor of Arts is most often awarded to students of languages, arts, social sciences, or business / economics. A Bachelor of Science usually covers subjects in the natural sciences and mathematics. A Bachelor of Engineering is granted in engineering and technology-based programmes. But don t worry. Each of these Bachelor degrees entitles you to go on to study for a Master degree, and they are all recognised internationally. Where do I start? It is a challenging time, arriving in a unfamiliar city to study, and the task of finding and organising all of the necessary information can be daunting. The university s International Office (Aka demisches Auslandsamt or AAA) will help you at every stage of your studies. They can advise you on obtaining a visa and can answer questions regarding your application, the university or tuition, and job placements. Often someone will come and pick you up at the airport or the train station, and staff members will help you to open a bank account and I came to Germany to study Environmental and Resource Management at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg in This resulted in an incredible experience. The university was welcoming and helpful throughout the process of settling down. Moreover, ERM was perfect, as it was multidisciplinary, it focused on sustainability, and it had many international students. I am very happy with my decision to study in Germany, a country that promotes diversity, equality, and sustainable development. Laura Sabogal is from Columbia and is studying for a BSc in Environmental and Resource Management at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

10 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany deal with formalities at the Residents Registration Office, the Immigration Authority, and the Registrar s Office. The Student Services (Studentenwerke) will help you to find accommodation in dormitories or on the private market. Tutors working with your programme or at the university will answer your questions and organise welcoming parties where you can make initial contacts. Check with your university to determine whether they can arrange a personal mentor for you. Alternatively, they might offer a buddy programme in which German and international students are paired up. This makes it easier to learn the language and to get to know Germany and its people. Checklist: applying for a Bachelor programme 3 How do I apply? Entry requirements for Bachelor programmes vary widely. Once you have decided on a particular course of study, check with the university and prepare accordingly. Here are the most important points you will need to consider: 3 What do I need? You will need a higher education entrance quali fication in order to be admitted to a study programme. You can check whether or not your school leaving certificate corresponds to the German higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulreife) in the DAAD Admission Database ( admission) or at If applicants from EU countries and the European Economic Area hold a qualification that entitles them to study in their home country, it also qualifies them to apply for a place in Germany. Non-EU / EEA applicants will need to have their qualifications checked either by the International Office or by uni-assist ( a verification service for foreign university entrance qualifications. If your degree certificate qualifies you to study at a university in your country but not in Germany, you will be required to complete an assessment test ( Feststellungsprüfung). Usually, if you want to enrol in a programme at a German university, you must provide proof of adequate German language skills. However, this brochure focuses on international programmes, so in this context a good knowledge of is usually an important admission requirement. Make sure that you find out in advance whether your programme requires s pecific tests (TOEFL, etc.) or how language skills are assessed in the programme you have chosen. Tip: More detailed information on the programmes in this brochure can be found at international-programmes.

Introduction 11 3 Where do I apply? On behalf of its member universities, uni-assist reviews and processes the application of foreign students. You can apply simultaneously to as many uni-assist universities as you like and you will only need one set of documents. These are then digitalised and sent to the appropriate universities. Certificates generally need to be authenticated and a handling fee applies for the processing and formal check of your application documents. However, each university independently decides whether or not uni-assist is responsible for the processing of applications and if so, to which applicant groups and degree courses this may apply. Please keep this in mind and check with the International Office of the university you have chosen. Also uni-assist is not responsible for applicants with Abitur, the German higher education entrance qualification, which includes graduates of German schools abroad. 3 Important application deadlines Application deadlines vary from university to university, and sometimes even from course to course within one university. Thus, please make sure that you know the exact application deadlines for your chosen study programme before you apply. Please also bear in mind that different application deadlines may apply for different groups of applicants. 3 Where can I find out more? For a smooth and successful application process, you can always contact your chosen university and ask about specific admission requirements. Depending on the individual programme, subject-specific grades may be weighted more or extra-curricular activities might be taken into account. Check with the International Office or Programme Advisers for exact and current information on entry requirements, selection procedures and tuition fees. 3 What happens next? Many universities invite their applicants to take part in aptitude tests (often in the form of interviews) in order to determine whether they are capable of success fully completing the desired course of study. You may also be asked to submit a letter of motivation or demonstrate some practical experience. 3 Well done! When the letter of acceptance drops through your letter box, you re nearly there. Don t forget to keep an eye on the deadlines for enrolment (Immatrikulation) and arrange for submission of the necessary documents (e. g., proof of health insurance, copy of your residence permit).

12 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany Checklist: information for international students in Germany 3 Accommodation Most universities help international students to find suitable accommodation. Halls of residence offer rooms at reasonable rates, usually in close proximity to the university. However, they are limited in number, so demand is high. Places are arranged by the respective Student Services (Studentenwerke) in each city, and you should apply as quickly as possible once you know your destination. More general information can be found at: A large selection of German student residences can also be found in the DAAD s Accommodation Finder at: Many students in Germany share an apartment with other students (so-called Wohngemeinschaften or WGs). The amount of rent you will pay will depend on whether you find your room on the private market or in a student residence and, even more importantly, on the city in question. Large cities like Hamburg, Munich, or Cologne are the priciest, as are traditional university towns like Freiburg or Heidelberg. On average, students pay about 300 EUR per month for rent. 3 Funding International students who require a visa in order to study in Germany must provide proof that they have sufficient funds to support themselves while living in Germany. This sum is set at a minimum of about 720 EUR per month. Students must have funding for an entire year, i. e., about 8,640 EUR, at their dis posal before they commence their studies. However, these are minimum costs. Most students have a budget of about 918 EUR at their disposal (on average), although actual costs will vary significantly depending on your lifestyle. As a rule, no tuition fees are charged at German universities, although exceptions apply and you should check whether or not your specific programme charges fees for tuition. Most universities charge administration fees, but these are significantly lower and often include a ticket for public transport in the area. Tip: To help you to plan your budget, many Student Services (Studentenwerke) offer service packages for international students. These can be booked in advance and include accommodation, meals, and health insurance for a fixed price. Some of them also cover leisure activities which will help you to settle in faster. 3 Scholarships The most important funding organisation for international students is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Try to find out about the possibilities and requirements for receiving a grant before you set off for Germany in one of the many international branch offices of the DAAD! You can also check with one of the foundations that support talented young students (Begabtenförderungswerk) or even with your university. Conditions for receiving scholarships vary and you will have to check with them all individually however, it may well be worth your while! More information can be found at:

Introduction 13 3 Student jobs About two-thirds of all German students take a job to earn some money while they are studying. For international students who do not come from EU or EEA countries, work restrictions apply. They are allowed to work for 120 full or 240 half days per year. If they want to work more than that, authorisation is required from the Employment Agency and the Immigration Authority. One exception to this regulation is the position of academic or student assistant (studen tische Hilfskraft), which can be held for an unlimited period of time. Please keep in mind that even unpaid work placements fall under the 120/240-day regulation. studies. During this period, they can take on any job regardless of the number of working days. However, they must be able to present proof of sufficient funds to support their stay. If they find work, they will be granted a temporary residence permit. Permanent residency can be granted after two years. 3 What s next? After graduating from a Bachelor programme, many students go on to pursue a Master degree. If you want to take up employment after graduation, keep in mind that international students who do not come from EU or EEA countries are permitted to look for employment commensurate with their qualifications in Germany over a period of 18 months after completion of their

14 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany Code of Conduct ensures common quality standards How can I obtain information about studying at a German university? What are the admission requirements? What kinds of support can I expect? All these questions are regulated by the National Code of Conduct on Foreign Students at German Universities. Although that may sound rather dry and academic, it is actually quite important for international students. After all, this document clearly defines the basic services that universities agree to provide when they sign the Code of Conduct also in the period after students have completed their studies. What does the Code of Conduct cover? Information and marketing Admission and placement Academic, language and social support, advice, and counselling for international students Services for international students during and upon completion of their studies Handling of complaints The Code of Conduct establishes a set of common minimum standards. Most universities go beyond this and offer many more services in support of international students. The index of participating univer sities on page 105 marks signatory universities whose programmes are presented in this brochure. All signatory universities commit themselves to providing students with information about their degree programmes, admission requirements and processes, fees, and living conditions. This information is made available preferably in, and also in other common foreign languages. The Code covers many issues, from pre-study German language courses to advice on career opportunities after graduation. It is certainly worth taking a look at the Code of Conduct so that you are familiar with your rights. Every university also names a contact point for international students where complaints may be filed. Beyond that, the universities continue to have obligations towards students even after they have completed their studies. They support graduates in mastering the transition to employment, and they maintain contact through alumni programmes. It is worth taking a look at the Code of Conduct. For more information on signatories and the contents, see: internationale-studierende/nationaler-kodex-fuerdas-auslaenderstudium (german only).

Introduction 15 How to use this brochure This brochure is divided into chapters, each covering a different study field. The table of contents on page 3 gives an overview of all subjects featured in the brochure, along with the page numbers on which programmes in these subjects are to be found. At the beginning of each section is a table with basic information about all the programmes listed in this section. The programmes are sorted alphabetically, first by subject and then by location. Some programmes offer more detailed information in the form of half-page advertisements. 19 Special: Preparatory Universities Courses present their Range of Courses

18 Preparatory Courses A well-prepared start A well-prepared start Some German universities offer preparatory programmes, also called prep courses, for foreign students. These programmes prepare you specifically for studying in Germany in language and/or subjectspecific courses. What are the advantages of such programmes? This ideal preparation enables you to equip yourself for the demands of German universities before the actual degree course begins. Then, when you begin your university studies, you get used to everyday life at a German university far more easily. This means that you can complete your degree without losing any time and probably even more successfully. Taking part in such a programme can have other advantages, too. At some universities, successfully completing a preparatory programme leads to a guaranteed place at the university. Other universities assure those completing such programmes that they will have better chances of gaining a place on a degree course. Who are the courses aimed at? The preparatory programmes offered by universities in Germany vary greatly with regard to both the content and the requirements for participation. There are courses for foreign students who have already been admitted to a degree course in Germany, for foreign students who have not yet gained admission but already meet the formal requirements for studying at a university in Germany and for foreign students who have not yet met the formal requirements for a higher education entrance qualification. The duration of these programmes also varies considerably. They generally last between three weeks and one year. The courses are usually taught in German, though there are also courses that prepare you for degree programmes in Germany which are taught in.

Preparatory Courses 19 What is taught in the programmes? The contents of these courses differ greatly depending on the objective. There are courses that prepare prospective students generally for university studies in Germany. Then there are courses providing preparation for a certain examination. This may be, for example, a language test or (at the Studienkollegs) the assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) for those who do not yet fulfil the formal requirements for studying in Germany. Other courses are more specific: they are geared towards certain disciplines or even a specific degree course at a particular university. The majority of the programmes consist of several modules, with most of them covering more than one of the following main areas: German (or, more rarely, ) as a foreign language: you acquire the language skills that you need for university studies. You can also prepare for a language test (e.g. DSH or TestDaF). Technical language: you are introduced to the distinctive features of academic language and the language of your subject. Subject-specific knowledge: you are prepared for the subject matter of a particular degree course or a specific entrance examination. Academic working methods: you familiarise yourself with the academic working methods and presentation techniques that are common in Germany. In addition you get to know the structures of Germany s universities. German culture: you are prepared specifically for living in Germany. You receive information about Germany and often inter cultural training. Almost every programme also includes excursions. And many of them offer special support from experienced mentors, for example. At any rate you ll have a good start in Germany with this ideal preparation. So take the opportunity! My name is Ray Man Ng. I attended a pre-study programme at the Institut für Internationale Kommunikation (IIK) in Berlin last year. We prepared for the language exam, got to know German universities, and received help with our university applications. The terminology we learned in the Technical German course was also very helpful. I am currently studying industrial engineering at the TH Brandenburg. I would like to become a business consultant and found my own company in the future. Ray Man Ng from Malaysia participated in a pre-study programme at the IIK Berlin.

110 International Bachelor Programmes in Germany The mission of the DAAD In line with its motto change by exchange, the DAAD has been creating international opportunities for young academics since We work continuously with German universities to promote internationalisation and to bring people into contact with Germany by promoting the German language abroad and at home. We also work with governments in developing countries helping them to establish more efficient universities. As an important German foreign policy partner, the DAAD brings an international dimension in matters of culture, science, education and development. The DAAD is a transparent and open organisation made up of dedicated individuals, many of whom, as recipients of grants or lectureships, were themselves first-hand beneficiaries of DAAD scholarships or programmes. Thanks to the DAAD s network of branch offices and information centres on all continents, many international students each year can find accurate, comprehensive, and current information about the German higher education system, visa regulations, and administrative requirements that must be taken care of prior to their arrival in Germany. In addition to providing print and online materials at its information centres, advisers reach prospective student audiences through fairs and outreach events at local universities and other public venues. The DAAD also keeps in touch with its former students via an alumni network. Today, the German Academic Exchange Service is the world s largest funding organisation of its kind. It not only helps international students in accessing German higher education opportunities. The agency also helps to promote study abroad opportunities for German citizens so that they can prepare to take on leadership roles in today s world by benefiting from an international education. Our mission is to foster mutual understanding between the people of Germany and of other countries all over the world. In 2016, 238 universities and 107 student governing bodies were members of the DAAD organisation. Budget The DAAD is supported by the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The European

The mission of the DAAD 111 Union is also one of the financial contributors, as are some companies, organisations, and foreign governments. In 2016, the DAAD had a total budget of 500 million EUR. The DAAD and its Goals Promoting internationalisation in higher education and research can take place on many levels. The DAAD funds internships and guest lecturers, provides scholar ships for young academics and researchers, and enables students from developing countries to participate in postgraduate degree programmes. In 2016 alone, DAAD programmes supported approximately 131,000 Germans and foreigners all over the world. The DAAD offers resources to German universities to support their internationalisation activities through marketing campaigns, publications, events, and continuing education courses. The DAAD has identified three main courses of action in its targeted pursuit of these goals: 1. Scholarships for the Best: The DAAD grants scholarships to the best German and international students and researchers who demonstrate exceptional ability and willingness to accept responsibility. These students are handpicked in a challenging application process. 2. Structures for Internationalisation: The DAAD promotes international qualification, mobility, and dialogue by creating higher education structures in Germany and abroad through international degree programmes, bilaterally founded universities, or academic networks. Its aim is the optimisation of the quality of research and instruction on a worldwide scale. 3. Expertise for Academic Collaborations: Through its activities in Germany and abroad, and thanks to the establishment of its effective network, the DAAD has gained significant expertise in educational cultures and systems of higher learning on an international scale. This expertise is a crucial factor in the further development of internationally successful academic collaborations, which can open the door for students and researchers to work together to achieve excellence in research and applied learning, irrespective of their country of origin.
