UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA LAS VEGAS Office of Diversity Initiatives Faculty Diversity Hiring Program FY15 Campus Report February 1, 2016
Introduction The Faculty Diversity Hiring Program (FDHP) is a joint effort of the Office of the Executive Vice President & Provost and the Office of Diversity Initiatives. The program, launched in FY14, is designed to increase the diversity of applicant pools for full-time, non-waiver, tenure-track academic faculty searches through an intentional process. A department constructs a search plan that includes (1) demographic goals based on external data for the disciplinary field in question, and (2) a recruitment strategy for underrepresented faculty. This plan is then presented at a college meeting, with appropriate feedback incorporated into the search plan, which is then routed through the Dean and the Provost. Upon Provost approval of the search plan, Department Chairs move all minimally qualified applicants to Level 2 in Consensus and are provided with weekly status updates of the demographic diversity of the Level 2 pool. Department search committee members are not able to review applicants until the Provost affirms that the department-established goals are met or a request is granted by the Provost to release the applicant pool regardless. Once the applicant pool is released to the department search committee the search process progresses. It is envisioned that these measures will result in search pools that are more diverse. Assessment of the FY14 FDHP led to several adjustments for FY15. Most of these adjustments were administrative, revolving around edits of the language contained on the FDHP form and other improvements to the form. One significant adjustment was to remove the International category from the goals in Parts 1A and 1B of the form, given that nationality status is not available via the demographic data reporting function of Consensus and thus cannot be analyzed. The most important adjustment involved the timing of when to begin tracking applicant demographics. For FY14, tracking began at Level 1 of Consensus, which had the unfortunate effect of including in the data applications that were incomplete, applications that were made in error, and applications from persons unqualified for the positions in questions. As a result, comparisons of initial search pool data against data on campus finalists and eventual hires was not as reliable as it might have been had only fully qualified applicants been
2 included in the initial pool data. To rectify this, for FY15 department chairs were tasked with moving all minimally qualified (or fully qualified, if one prefers) candidates from Level 1 to Level 2 of Consensus before the sending of weekly demographic updates of the pools to those department chairs for their use in monitoring the development of their search pools would commence. This improvement allowed the FDHP administrator to begin tracking the demographics of authentic applicants at Level 2, thereby facilitating more meaningful data analysis. This report s data include search demographic goals by gender and racial/ethnic category and also the demographics of the Level 2 search pools at the time the candidate applications were opened to the full search committees in Consensus. Further, two additional items of data the demographics of the candidates invited for on-campus interviews, and the demographics of the eventual hires will be provided to the relevant Deans for their confidential use only. Please note that At FDHP Part 2 Approval refers to the demographic composition of the applicant pool at the time the full search committee was granted access to it in Consensus. FDHI FY15 Assessment As the data in Appendix 1 illustrate, the results of the FY15 academic faculty hiring cycle are mixed. On one hand, UNLV hired proportionally more women faculty than men as compared to FY14. In FY14, 23 faculty women faculty (52.2%) were hired as opposed to 21 men (47.7%). In FY15, UNLV hired 23 women faculty (65.7%) compared to 12 men (34.3%). However, on the other hand, the institution continues to do less well at recruiting and hiring Hispanic,, /, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander faculty. In FY14, 2 Hispanic (4.5%) and 0 faculty were hired, while in FY15, 0 Hispanic and 2 (5.7%) faculty were hired. No / or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander faculty were hired in either year. Note that some faculty hires may have chosen more than one racial/ethnic category, which would have placed them in the Two or More group exclusively. This group contained 5 (11.3%) persons in FY14, but only 2 (5.7%) in FY15. An additional
3 result for FY15 is that Asian candidate numbers increased proportionally at the apparent expense of White candidates. Everything else in regard to race/ethnicity appears generally the same for both FY14 and FY15. FDHI FY16 Adjustments One anticipated change for FY16 is the full adoption of a Qualtrics survey by Human Resources for general management of the entire administrative and faculty hiring process at UNLV. The Qualtrics survey became active partway through the FY15 hiring cycle. This change should result in improvements (already evident in FY15 s partial use) that transfer to the FDHP as well, most particularly in terms of decreased processing times for Part 1 and Part 2 approval requests and turnarounds. A second change is that the Office of Diversity Initiatives has purchased a subscription with the National Registry of Diverse & Strategic Faculty that will allow UNLV departments to post their searches on this site, which is frequented by underrepresented position seekers, and will also allow UNLV departments to search the Registry database for potential applicants. The hope is that use of the Registry will have a positive impact on the recruiting of underrepresented groups. Conclusion This report is late by roughly six months. Given that lateness, and the fact that the FY16 hiring cycle is beginning to move toward the phases of campus visits and offers, any specific conclusions beyond those contained above will be bundled with and addressed in the FY16 report. The campus, however, is invited to explore the rich data contained in Appendix 2. As in the case of the FY14 report, this iteration provides departments and colleges with the demographic results of their search pools, information that has previously (prior to FY14) not been at all available to those units, and on which they may base future faculty search strategies. NB Special thanks to Mary Brady in the Senior Vice Provost s Office for her assistance in developing the calculating spreadsheets used in this report. Special thanks also to Valerie Holsinger in the Office of
4 Human Resources for invaluable help with the workings of Consensus. Finally, appreciation as well to Brent Ransom, formerly of the Office of Human Resources, for developing the Qualtrics survey.
