Established by the European Commission The ERC supports excellence in frontier research through a bottom-up, individual-based, pan-european competition Budget: 13 billion ( ) billion /year 7.5 billion ( ) billion /year Scientific governance: independent Scientific Council with 22 members including the ERC President; full authority over funding strategy Support by the ERC Executive Agency (autonomous) Excellence as the only criterion Support for the individual scientist no networks! 27 What ERC offers: Creative Freedom to Individual Grantee Established by the European Commission ERC offers independence, recognition & visibility to work on a research topic of own choice, with a team of own choice to gain true financial autonomy for 5 years to negotiate with the host institution the best conditions of work to attract top team members (EU and non-eu) and collaborators to move with the grant to any place in Europe if necessary (portability of grants) to attract additional funding and gain recognition; ERC is a quality label 27

33 FP7 H2020 Participation of Canadian researchers Established by the European Commission Canadian Applicants: 331 applications presented by researchers with Canadian nationality (214 under FP7 and 117 under H2020) At the time of application, 13% had residence in Canada (three were successful), 84% in other European countries and the rest outside Europe. They presented their application mainly from Host Institutions based in the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Canadian grantees: The ERC funds 52 Canadian researchers (31 under FP7 21 under H2020) 39 men and 13 women 43 starting/consolidator grantees and 9 advance grantees. Working in the following domains: 18 working in the Life Sciences, 22 in the Physical and Engineering 12 in the Social Sciences and Humanities. They are based with the grant in 11 ERA countries (mainly in the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany) at University of Oxford, Delft University, Max Planck Society, University of Geneva, etc. 33
