7 Introduction 5 Welcome! Exciting university courses for international students Interested in the new summer and winter courses available in y? In this booklet and on the corresponding website you ll find an overview of the diverse range of Language and Short Courses in y 2018 offered at universities. Most of these courses, which have been designed specifically for international students, take place during the university summer break (generally between June and September). Some courses are also offered during the winter months. The courses are run by the universities, partly in collaboration with long-standing external partners. As a rule, the universities ensure that course leaders have extensive teaching experience and cross-cultural expertise, which guarantees that your needs will be well met. The courses which the universities have announced to the DAAD are presented in this publication. In addition, some universities may organise further courses at short notice. For more information visit the universities web pages. The range of available courses is enormous. There are exciting activities catering to just about every taste and interest. You ll find courses in Language and Literary Studies, Art and Art History, Music and Social, Cultural and Media Studies. There are also subjects like Law, Business and Economics, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Agriculture, Medicine as well as Engineering. Besides short courses such as European Studies, Renewable Energies or Art History, there are many courses designed for learning, focussing on different aspects such as cultural studies, cross-cultural communication, or for lawyers and engineers. But don t worry, you won t miss out on enjoying yourself either. The diverse extracurricular programmes which are included with many courses will help you get to know the country and people. You ll enjoy museum visits, concert trips, get- togethers and excursions to places such as, Munich, the Black Forest, the Alps, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. As well as being good fun, these social programmes will provide you with important insights into y s political, cultural and economic landscape.

8 6 Language and Short Courses in y In this one month, I spoke more than I ever had spoken before. I really enjoyed that I could attend various seminars, such as European Fairy Tales or Creative Writing, in addition to the language courses. During the excursions, I became better acquainted with y and got to spend time with native speakers. It was not the first time that I studied in y for a short time, and I hope that it will not be the last time it is worthwhile! Katinka Rósza from Hungary studies interpretation and translation on the Master s level and attended the International Summer Academy Sans Souci (ISAS) at the University of Potsdam. In addition to this booklet, an online resource is available ( It provides detailed information about the course contents, requirements, costs, duration and extracurricular programmes. Just enter the Course-ID to look up a specific course. One thing is certain: a summer or winter course at a university will make a lasting impression on your outlook on y. It s an ideal opportunity for you to get better acquainted with the country and its higher education and research system. You ll have a memorable firsthand experience which will make you appreciate why academics and research projects have such an excellent reputation throughout the world. By participating in a summer or winter course, you ll also have the chance to find out early on whether studying in y is really for you. 9 Introduction 7 Things worth knowing about the courses and attendance What do I definitely need to know? Course dates? At the time of publication, not all course dates have been fixed. You can find up-to-date information from the online language and short courses data base at It s definitely worth checking whether there have been any changes to the course dates both before you book your journey and shortly before the start of the course. Who should I contact? Always get in touch directly with the course organiser. The organ ising team can answer your specific questions about the course. details are always provided in the course descriptions. Please don t contact the DAAD as they are unable to provide course-specific information. Who is responsible for the courses? The language and short courses prospectus produced by the DAAD does not represent an assessment of or recommendation for either the organisers or the courses offered. The respective organisers are solely responsible and liable for the quality and content of the courses. Please also see the suggested links ( Where to find more information ) from page 160 onwards. What will I have to pay? In general, you ll have to pay for the course, travel costs, accommodation, meals and the social programme yourself. That can soon add up to more than thousand euros. Make sure beforehand that you really can meet the costs and know what payment arrangements are available. Sometimes it s possible, for example, to pay the fees in instalments until the start of the course. If you wish to attend a course in as a Foreign Language or as a Special Language, you can also apply for a scholarship from the DAAD programme University Summer Courses. You must submit your application to the diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general) or the DAAD regional office or information centre in your home country.

10 8 Language and Short Courses in y The three weeks I spent at Jade University were some of the best of my life. The Fluidic MEMS courses were interesting and inform ative, and the hands-on laboratory work was fantastic. Students do not often have the chance to work on cutting-edge projects with real-life applications. I am grateful to the team that allowed us into the lab. The programme coordinators offered many group activities outside of class. I am planning to return, and I hope to study for my Master s in y. Annelise Miller from the USA studies Bioengineering and attended the International Summer School on Fluidic MEMS at Jade University. Further information for your country as well as application dates are available on the scholarship website: For personal guidance please contact the DAAD office or the diplomatic mission in your home country. The courses DAAD scholarship holders may attend are indicated by the following symbol F. These courses may also be attended by students without a DAAD scholarship. The courses marked with this symbol can be found mainly in the chapters as a Foreign Language and as a Special Language. Some are also listed in the chapters Social, Cultural and Media Studies, Literary Studies / Studies and Art and Art History, Music. Do I need a visa? If you re an EU or EEA (European Economic Area) national, you simply need your passport. The same applies for nationals of Andorra, Australia, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, the Republic of Korea, and of the USA. If your stay extends beyond 90 days, you will need to apply for a residence permit at your local Foreigners Office. Citizens from other countries may be eligible for a visa exemption for stays shorter than 90 days. For a current list of these countries, visit If you require an entry visa for y, you will have to apply for one in advance from the responsible consulate general or embassy in your home country. With your visa application, you will need to name the purpose of your stay abroad. If your stay extends beyond 90 days, you will need to apply for a residence permit at the foreigners registration office in charge as well upon arrival.

11 Introduction 9 In general, you ll need the following documentation for your visa application: a definite confirmation of admission from the university or course provider in y. A conditional admission is also accepted. For a language course, the confirmation must state that it is an intensive language course (at least 18 hours of instruction a week); proof of health and accident insurance that is valid for y; proof of sufficient funds for your living expenses for the duration of your stay. Find out in advance whether your health insurance will provide adequate coverage for your stay in y. If not, you should take out additional health insurance for the duration of your study trip. Note: in general the visa is only valid for the duration of the course. The exact start and finish dates are often stated in the confirmation of admission from the course provider. Once the course has finished, you must leave the country promptly. The visa for a language course cannot be converted into a student visa. If you wish to complete the summer or winter course in connection with a degree programme in y, you must state this in your visa application. In general, you ll need to apply for a student visa (Studienvisum) or a prospective student visa (Studien bewerber - visum) for this type of visit. As visa regulations can change from time to time, you should enquire well in advance about the entry requirements for y that could affect you. At the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg, I received a student tutor who supported my arrival and with whom I could practice right from the start. The contact to students from many different countries in the intensive course helped me gain a new perspective on my own homeland. The relationship between professors and students was very personal. I enjoyed this, just as I appreciated the orderliness, the safety and the well-functioning public transportation. 12 10 Language and Short Courses in y Learning Diverse possibilities As well as the courses you can attend as part of universities summer and winter programmes, there are many other, often private, language course providers. A good place to look for appropriate courses and providers is the website of the Professional Association for as a Foreign Language (Fachverband für Deutsch als Fremdsprache) de/de/daf_angebote/sprachkursangebote. The advantage of the registered providers listed on this site is that they all must meet a set of minimum quality standards. Useful tip Goethe-Institut: A good place to learn is the Goethe Institute the Federal Republic of y s world-wide cultural institute. The Goethe-Institut offers courses in many countries as well as at 14 locations across y. Further information: 3 You can register for a course online. Joining the online community Deutsch für Dich ( for you) you may find learning partners from all over the world. Language ability Test your language ability: Before registering for a course or a course conducted in, you should check your level of. Will it really be up to the demands of the course you ve selected? If not, you should consider choosing a more suitable course; otherwise, you may learn less than you expected or run the risk of not being able to keep up and quickly become frustrated. The Goethe-Institut s website ( einstufungstest) provides a self-assessment test to check your language ability.

13 Introduction 11 In this brochure, please note that: as a Foreign Language courses are available for all levels, from beginners courses to advanced training for teachers. Most as a Special Language courses require prior knowledge of. The short courses are conducted partly in and partly in. If you re a beginner, all A1 and A2 level courses are suitable for you. If you re advanced, go for B1 and B2 courses. If you re very advanced, C1 and C2 courses are for you. (For more information also see the following illustration.) The language level required for each course is specified in the booklet and on the website. Assessment according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages : The level of skill required is dependent on the level of the course. This follows the standard levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In short: To gain experience in a lab abroad, I attended the Intl. Summer School at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Mainz University. We had interesting lectures on the basics and state-of-the-art research. We also carried out a project in the lab. This gave me an opportunity to learn new experimental techniques, broaden my knowledge in molecular biology and make new friends all around the world. I really liked the great atmosphere for personal development and scientific research. Each chapter begins with an overview table, listing the most important information about each course. The courses are listed alphabetically and arranged by subject, course location and institution. Detailed course summaries have also been included by several course providers. These courses are specially marked in the table by a ^ symbol and corresponding page number. On pages 15 30, you will find the entire range of course offerings of selected universities. If you re looking for courses in a particular city, check the index at the back of the brochure (pp ). 134 132 Preparatory Courses A well-prepared start A well-prepared start Some universities offer preparatory programmes, also called prep courses, for foreign students. These programmes prepare you specifically for studying in y in language and/or subjectspecific courses. What are the advantages of such programmes? This ideal preparation enables you to equip yourself for the demands of universities before the actual degree course begins. Then, when you begin your university studies, you get used to everyday life at a university far more easily. This means that you can complete your degree without losing any time and probably even more successfully. Taking part in such a programme can have other advantages, too. At some universities, successfully completing a preparatory programme leads to a guaranteed place at the university. Other universities assure those completing such programmes that they will have better chances of gaining a place on a degree course. Who are the courses aimed at? The preparatory programmes offered by universities in y vary greatly with regard to both the content and the requirements for participation. There are courses for foreign students who have already been admitted to a degree course in y, for foreign students who have not yet gained admission but already meet the formal requirements for studying at a university in y and for foreign students who have not yet met the formal requirements for a higher education entrance qualification. The duration of these programmes also varies considerably. They generally last between three weeks and one year. The courses are usually taught in, though there are also courses that prepare you for degree programmes in y which are taught in.

135 Preparatory Courses 133 What is taught in the programmes? The contents of these courses differ greatly depending on the objective. There are courses that prepare prospective students generally for university studies in y. Then there are courses providing preparation for a certain examination. This may be, for example, a language test or (at the Studienkollegs) the assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) for those who do not yet fulfil the formal requirements for studying in y. Other courses are more specific: they are geared towards certain disciplines or even a specific degree course at a particular university. The majority of the programmes consist of several modules, with most of them covering more than one of the following main areas: (or, more rarely, ) as a foreign language: you acquire the language skills that you need for university studies. You can also prepare for a language test (e.g. DSH or TestDaF). Technical language: you are introduced to the distinctive features of academic language and the language of your subject. Subject-specific knowledge: you are prepared for the subject matter of a particular degree course or a specific entrance examination. Academic working methods: you familiarise yourself with the academic working methods and presentation techniques that are common in y. In addition you get to know the structures of y s universities. culture: you are prepared specifically for living in y. You receive information about y and often inter cultural training. Almost every programme also includes excursions. And many of them offer special support from experienced mentors, for example. At any rate you ll have a good start in y with this ideal preparation. We prepared for the language exam, got to know universities, and received help with our university applications. The terminology we learned in the Technical course was also very helpful. 152 150 Language and Short Courses in y Goals, Roles and Programmes of the DAAD Change by exchange is the motto and primary goal of the DAAD. Since 1925, the DAAD has been helping young academics gain international experience around the world. Awarding scholar - ships is just one of the many facets of its diverse programme. The DAAD promotes inter nationalisation at universities, strengthens Studies and the language abroad and helps developing countries establish more efficient universities. The DAAD is an important foreign policy partner in matters of culture, science, education and development. The DAAD is comprised of a vibrant community of committed individuals. In addition to scholarship holders and alumni, who return home with experience from y and cultivate contacts for years to come, the DAAD depends on academics, whose expert opinions serve as the basis for decisions on scholarship applications and project proposals. Specially appointed students and graduates from universities incorporate their perspectives into the work of the DAAD. And naturally, there is the global network of DAAD employees, many of whom received grants or lectureships themselves and benefited from the opportunity of international experience. Today, the Academic Exchange Service is the world s largest funding organ isation of its kind. It is strongly devoted to internationalising the research and educational sector. Thanks to its efforts, y has become more tolerant and open-minded and certainly more competitive in a globalised world. In 2016, the DAAD was proud to count 238 universities and 107 student governing bodies as members of its organisation. Budget The budget of the DAAD is mainly financed through public revenues from various ministries, in particular, the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The European Union is now the organi sation s third largest financial backer. Additional financing is provided by companies, organisations and foreign governments. In 2016, the DAAD had a total budget of about 500 million euros.

153 Goals, Roles and Programmes of the DAAD 151 The DAAD and its Goals Over 250 DAAD programmes supported more than 130,000 s and for eigners around the world in These programmes awarded study-abroad scholarships and PhD fellowships to young academics and researchers, funded internships and guest lectureships, allowed citizens from developing countries to participate in postgraduate degree programmes, and even established new universities abroad. The DAAD also supports the internationalisation activities of universities through marketing campaigns, publications, events and continuing education courses. The DAAD pursues three main courses of action to ensure that it continues achieving these goals in the future: 2. Structures of Internationality: Creating higher education structures in y and abroad (e.g. international degree programmes, bilaterally founded universities, academic networks, etc.) which promote international qualification, mobility and dialogue which, in turn, improves the quality of research and instruction 3. Expertise for Academic Collaborations: Systematising, developing and providing expertise in educational cultures and systems of higher learning, which the DAAD has gained through its work and network and which is essential for developing internationally successful collaborations 1.
