2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Cristo Rey High School, rooted in the traditions of Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) transforms lives by providing a Catholic college preparatory education to motivated students with limited financial means. All students participate in a unique Work-Study program, learning professional work skills and generating income to offset the cost of their education. Background Statement Our History: Cristo Rey High School Sacramento is a private, Catholic, college-preparatory school dedicated to the educational advancement of low-income youth. Cristo Rey opened its doors in August of 2006; cosponsored by the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community and the California Province of the Society of Jesus; with the endorsement of the Diocese of Sacramento. National Strength: Cristo Rey High School Sacramento is a member of The Cristo Rey Network. Comprised of 30 schools across the United States, the Cristo Rey Network provides a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to over 10,000 urban young people with limited financial resources. Cristo Rey Model All Things Work Together to Help Our Students Succeed: Cristo Rey is able to provide a Catholic, college preparatory education to motivated students with limited financial means in the following ways: 1.Work-Study Program which offers a means to pay for the cost of a student s education 2.Dedicated faculty and administration that provide a challenging curriculum 3.College-advising staff that sets every student on a college-bound path 4. Work-Study Sponsors and Corporate Sponsors who provide adult mentors who demonstrate to our students the importance of a college education and strong work ethic. Our Programs: Cristo Rey is focused on preparing its students to enter and graduate from college. Our students complete a rigorous college preparatory curriculum of 280 units. Curriculum: Language Arts (4 years); Mathematics (3 years), Foreign Language (2 years); Laboratory Science (2 years); Social Science (3 years); Theology (4 years); Visual and Performing Arts (1 year); and P.E./ Health (1 year). Enrollment: Current enrollment is 320 students. Class & Faculty Resources: We employ 54 faculty members, offer small class sizes averaging 22 students, and maintain a 17:1 student to faculty ratio. Work-Study Program: All students participate in our Work-Study Program; enabling them to gain valuable real world work experience at over 80 area businesses and to meaningfully contribute to the cost of their education. The Importance of Giving: Cristo Rey High School relies on philanthropic support from individual donors and companies in the Sacramento community who share our vision to help prepare underprivileged youth for a lifetime of achievement at home, at school, at work, and in their communities. Needs Statement Financial Aid: our students are severely economically disadvantaged. The average income of a family of five is $32,456 (which is over $20,000 lower than the median household for Sac county). Approximately 97% of the students who attend Cristo Rey Sacramento must receive financial aid to offset the cost of their education. Goal = $500,000 An Athletic Field will provide a place for student athletes to compete in outdoor sports! Currently we do not have a home field for our students to play. Goal = $1,000,000 Technology: Inorder to stay current with today's evolving technology and the global shift in education technology (as well as prepare our students for college), we would like to offer technology tools (such as chrome books) in the classrooms. Goal = $300,000 2

Each Cristo Rey family is responsible for contributing toward annual tuition of $2,300 per student (14% of total education cost). Tuition assistance is available to all families at Cristo Rey with demonstrated financial need. 5 Build an Athletic Field Description Capital Fund to build an athletic field as well as a school gymnasium. We are very proud of our student athletes, especially our soccer team who made it all the way to the semi-finals last season. Our students want to compete on a "home field" and we hope to build an athletic field where our students can compete in soccer and rugby. Our goal is to have a field built by Spring We also hope to build a gymnasium where our students can compete in other sports, as well as have a place to engage in physical education. There is currently no space for athletics at our new campus. Budget $1,000, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Recreation & Sports, General/Other Athletics & Sports Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Among the many benefits of playing competitive sports, Cristo Rey students will gain many critical development skills, as well as improved health and well being. Recent studies have shown that youth involvement in sports is directly linked to improved academic achievement, higher selfesteem, greater confidence, discipline, stronger peer relationships, and teamwork. Also, an enormous sense of pride will result from our student athletes playing "home games" on a new athletic field, and in a new school gymnasium. We will measure our success by watching our student athletes succeed as well as build confidence in themselves and feel a sense of pride by playing on a home field or gymnasium. There is much evidence to support the positive impact of youth sports, primarily the focus of research in this area looks at the 5 "C's": competence, confidence, connections, character and caring. Technology Description A technology program for our students, including hands-on educational technology tools and education on how to best use technology. One such offering is chrome books for our students to use in the classroom. Budget $300, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Education, General/Other Computer Literacy Adolescents Only (13-19 years) We have enabled our students to be better prepared for college and successful careers by offering a computer lab at our school. We also offer technology education and hand-on computer experience. Most of our students use our computer lab for school work as well as college applications and other related computer work in preparation for college. Computer literacy/technology assessments of our students on an ongoing basis. 5
6 Work-Study Description At Cristo Rey Sacramento, students help to offset the total cost of their education by participating in the Work-Study program Inc. (a 509 (a) public charity). The Work-Study program is made possible through strategic partnerships with local businesses, non-profit organizations and corporations who mentor and financially sponsor our students. Budget $1,800, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Education, General/Other Educational Programs Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Work-Study offers real-world work experience by providing hands-on opportunities for students to work for local businesses and corporations. As a result of our Work-Study program, students learn the importance of teamwork, learn new skills outside of the classroom and learn personal responsibility. Mentoring our students is a critical aspect of our Wok-Study program and many students directly benefit from the encouragement and guidance that they receive from our Work-Study sponsors. Ongoing assessment of our students via surveys, frequent performance reviews and feedback from the Work-Study sponsors. 6
