4 DESCRIBE THE REQUESTED COURSE/PROGRAM ACTION (additional pages may be attached if necessary): We request that the B.A. in Environmental Sustainabililty and Human Ecology Program be divided into two tracks: (1) Environmental Science and (2) Cultural Resource Management. Please see attached documentation for details. SET FORTH THE RATIONALE FOR THIS PROPOSAL: The proposed curriculum expansion makes sense for the following reasons: Increasingly, the preservation of cultural heritage is viewed as part of sustainability; the planned programmatic changes allow UB to become more fully involved in issues surrounding sustainable development. Although vital in a city like Baltimore with its rich cultural heritage, financial resources are lacking to address important aspects of cultural resource management; UB students will be able to provide critical assistance to the community in conserving its heritage through internships with city and state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local private CRM firms. As part of the Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology Program, cultural resource management will be firmly situated in the Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies, UB's STEM unit; a scientific perspective is necessary to train students for the types of work they will perform after they graduate. The College of Arts and Sciences doesn't have the resources to offer a degree program in cultural resource management at this time; developing this initiative within an existing program utilizes existing resources, augments that program, and enables UB to build capability in a valuable type of education in an established academic framework. In addition to the above-stated arguments, the curriculum modification can heighten UB's public profile in light of recent Maryland higher education initiatives in environmental education and problems. In short, adding a CRM track to the program of Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology trains individuals in a widening career path and enhances UB's contribution to the Baltimore community while using principally available staff and sources of revenue.
