THE PAW PRINT Our Foundation: Honor, Respect, and Loyalty Fall 2014, dec. 9, 2014 Featured Articles: The Rise of College Classes The Academies 2 Recent Events 3 4 Hialeah Educational Academy, a place not only instructing its students how to properly treat others, but also what to expect in life as well. Honor: A high respect Respect: A feeling of deep determination for someone or something. Loyalty: A duty that each and every one of us has but not all of us have the urge to convey. These are qualities that not only students have for teachers but also that teachers have for students here at HEA. An objective that is different and unheard of in any other school. Hialeah Educational Academy is the location where all three components come into one. A place where all students are guaranteed success and where friends become brothers and sisters. Since 2008, Mr. Carlos Alvarez, principal, along with the Mayor of Hialeah, Julio Robaina, brought us this gift. Recently it has been expanding its doors to a younger crowd, middle school scholars, so that among with us, they can perhaps one day look back at the great school they once knew. It is with great honor that in 2013, Hialeah Educational Academy was ranked as Newsweek s Top Nationwide Schools. In the category: Doing the Most with the Least, the school was placed at number thirteen. It is required months upon months of hard work and determination, fortunately, in the end of it all, there was success. If we, as students, continue to work hard, we will one day achieve that number one spot. This is not a dream; it is a goal that we will get to, together, as a whole.
Countless hours of studying, revising essays, reading, and lectures. That is the life of a great percentage of the student body at City of Hialeah Educational Academy. HEA currently offers Advance Placement courses such as English Language, English Literature, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, US History, World History, Psychology, Calculus, Environmental Science, and Human Geography. Don t like any of the AP courses offered? Have you overachieved and taken all the courses already? No problem, HEA also allows students to take Dual Enrollment classes at Miami Dade College. If there is no way you can make it to Miami Dade The Rise of the College Classes By: Yairen Sotolongo College, then MDC comes to HEA! Miami Dade College is not the only one that comes to us, but this school year, Florida International University is also offering classes on campus. There are currently two courses being offered after school from 2:45pm to 4:00 pm Monday s through Thursday s. For more information, feel free to contact Mrs. D. Gonzalez, Counselor, in the main office. AP Classes and Dual Enrollment are open to all students who meet the requirements. Spring Schedule Miami Dade College Economics and SLS Florida International University TBD The Expansion City of Hialeah Educational Academy receives one million dollars for an expansion. HEA has been a school with many achievements, including climbing the rankings on the top schools of the district, high passing on standard tests, and a high graduation rate. This school, although very small, proves to be of much success and promises bright leaders. Just now, the school plans on expanding with a new building that will benefit many of the teaching needs. Starting on January, the new building with start construction around the school, and will be finished hopefully by the next academic year. The school has been granted one million dollars from the state governor to begin construction. By: Ariel Vizcaino 2
The Academies Public Service Aid Class By: Eric Rodriguez On a regular day in the P.S.A (Public Service Aid) Academy the students are taught to stand at attention. Shortly after the class leader calls roll and does his inspections on the rest of the class, the real fun begins. After the class leader says "Class PT Formation Move," the class takes the front leaning rest position. Between 50 and 100 push ups are performed on the average day. Next is "jumping jacks ready... Begin". Students complete approximately 50 to 100 jumping jacks. Finally they finish off with 50 squats. When all that is over the students proceed to the classroom in the Sector 5. While in the classroom the students learn all that there is to know about the police life. This class was designed to prepare you for a cumulative exam taken at the end of the year. Furthermore, once the exam is passed, using the certificate earned, the student will be eligible to apply for a position as a Public Service Aid for any city in Miami Dade County. With the help of Officer Mesa, all students enrolled in the PSA Class feel confident that they will pass the exam. Sergeant Fernandez s PSA class in action as they do push-ups. Class in FS7 By: Reynier Quintana The Fire Academy helps prepare you for real life outside of school and helps guide you in careers towards assisting and helping others. Once a fire student goes in through those gates, it s like going into a new world. The instructors are not seen as teachers, but more as mentors because of the way they don t sugar coat any details, they actually tell you how it is. Standing inside the station, is like being in the perfect place. What better place to be for training than an actual fire station? You get to see the equipment and use it when needed; at the station there is a tower that has a maze to simulate real-life scenarios. For example, not being able to see due to smoke during rescues. A daily routine in the Fire Academy is as follows: everyone runs to the diamonds, portray the attention stance, and remain silent until the class instructor opens us up for Physical Training. Some activities we do include raise the roofs, push-ups, sit ups, burpee s, jumping jacks and cardiovascular activities like running. The Fire Academy is really more hands on than bookwork because it helps the students learn and understand more about the topic. For instance, when the students are learning CPR, the instructors put the students in a real life scenario with dummies and you have to operate the steps needed to save their life. It puts the student under pressure just like real life; when you never know what to expect. The most important accomplishment is receiving the certifications of achievement upon completing the four years of high school. The first certificate is earned your sophomore year, which you get CPR certificates and learn basic life support, and learn how to act if someone collapses. The following year, the Fire Academy consists of receiving the First Responder Certificate. In the end, the Fire Academy provides all academy students with a once in a lifetime opportunity. 3
Athletics Pump s Up the School Spirit By: Cesar Roiz On October 31 st, the Girl s Volleyball team played against the Faculty. The student body each had a color to represent their grade. The Class of 2015, wore black, while the Class of 2016 was representing their class in white. Class of 2017 wore red and the Class of 2018 wore blue, and lastly the middle school students wore grey. The pep rally was a success. All students intrigued, some cheering for the teachers while most rooted for the girls! The faculty came out on top, not without a fight though, the girls volleyball team fought long and hard. At halftime, the cheerleaders performed their amazing routine. Shortly after, the Sirens performed to a short mix tape of Run the World (Girls) by Beyoncé. The students won the first round with 15 points. The faculty scored zero points. The faculty made a nice come back the next round with 15 points. The students came short with only 5 points. The third round was a close one with the faculty making 14 points and students making 15. The girls would end up winning the game with 15 points on the 4th round. Hispanic Heritage Show By: Gipsy Izquierdo From September 15 th to October 15 th, Mrs. Sanchez-Soriano s Spanish classes and our dance classes united to complete different activities that addressed the Hispanic Heritage Month. On October 17 th, there was the first time ever Hispanic Heritage Show hosted by the Spanish Club. In attendance, there were middle school students along with a few other classes. There were traditional dances; videos representing the culture of our Hispanic countries and the show had amazing poems by poets like Pablo Neruda. The show ended with a finale poem and a song from Celia Cruz, La vida en un carnaval which invited everyone in the audience to participate in one final dance. Lastly, all the students were invited to go outside and eat traditional food from different countries. The final surprise was the Mexican tradition: Romper la piñata. Juniors, Melissa Salgado and Elianni Marin, dance to Quimbara by Celia Cruz The Volleyball Team gathers in a circle to discuss their next play. Open house recap Middle School Open House By: Kevin Martinez The Middle School Open House kicked off in the Pavilion. Different booths were set-up to inform parents about the many things happening in the school. The event occurred from 5:00-8:00pm on Sept. 11 th. Parents arrived early and were able to begin the open house earlier. They were able to enter all teachers classrooms and see the environment in which their students would be learning. As well as, walk the routes their children have created as routines. High School Open House By: Kevin Martinez For many parents, this was their child s first high school open house. An overwhelming experience for parents as they watch their child transition into a new school year for a new learning environment. Luckily, we had a full house with many eager families ready to meet their teachers. There was an information rally with new and important details about this coming year. All parents had the opportunity to visit all of their student s classrooms. 4
The Struggles of a Student Athlete Some struggles that a student athlete face are coping with injuries and focusing on academics. Injuries are a huge risk while playing any type of sports. It can be a minor injury like a sprained ankle to as serious as a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Many star athletes have suffered injuries such as Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant. It can permanently affect their life. Focusing on academics while focusing on sports is another problem student athlete s face. Many student athletes focus too much on their sport and they forget about their academics. Some cases, the student gets a career ending injury and have nothing to fall back on since they are failing their classes. Everyone should have their academics on a good level if trying to pursue their dream fails. It can help you avoid that job at McDonalds as a cashier.
