2 The foreword I spent my exchange semester spring 2016 in Madrid, Spain studying in Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). This exchange report is intended to help anybody that might be considering UAM, Madrid or Spain for their exchange experience. In this report I will discuss some of my experiences in terms of studies, practicalities and free time. I decided to write this report in English so that also foreign degree students can profit from it. However, I am happy to be contacted for any additional questions also in Finnish. General description of the receiving country, city and university Spain is one of the southern European countries that occupies a large share of the Iberian peninsula. Within the country there are multiple different kinds of regions that stretch from mountains to sandy beaches. Spain is filled with beautiful landscapes and numerous interesting places to see which is proven for example by the mere number of UNESCO world heritage sites located in the country. Spain also has a very strong and original culture that contains many forms of art that simply don t exist elsewhere and that are very strongly associated with this beautiful country. For example flamenco and bull fights are examples of such culture. In general, the customs of the Spaniards differ from those of Finns in many aspects. There is a lot more physical contact in the form of cheek kissing and people need a lot less personal space than the average Finn. Also the culture of going out for a drink or some tapas is going strong and it is not at all uncommon to see people of all age groups out even on a week night. The food and drink culture is certainly strong containing for example paella, sangria and ham. I spent my semester in the capital Madrid that is located in the middle of the country in the community of Madrid. Madrid is an interesting city that is full of life. Never for one moment was I bored there because there is always something to see, experience, listen to or taste. It is a charming combination of beautiful architecture, cheap food and drink, museums, parks and cultural shows. I liked UAM as a university. It is maybe a bit better-known for its faculties of humanities rather than engineering but the technological faculty Escuela Politecnica Superior, in which I was registered, offers good informatics tuition. UAM has two campuses: the medicine campus closer to the center of Madrid and the campus of Cantoblanco about minutes by train from the center. The climate in Spain is normally thought to be very different from what we re used to in Finland. I arrived in Spain a bit before New Year s. It certainly was amusing to hear people ask me Oh nice, you re in Spain, is it hot?. No because I was in Madrid. The city in the middle of the country, far away from the sea and close to the mountains does not exhibit the typical idea of a Spanish climate. A well-known saying states Madrid tiene nueve meses de invierno y tres de infierno which translates to Madrid has nine months of winter and three months of hell. They are not completely wrong. I was told my exchange semester was not very typical in terms of weather. The temperatures barely dropped below zero. On the other hand, the spring remained cold and a bit rainy longer than the normal years. However, once we hit the summer months after the exams, I fully understood why they refer to

3 the Madrid summer as hell. With temperatures rising up to 36 degrees Celsius, it was quite impossible to sleep in a room without air conditioning. In conclusion, it s good to be prepared for differences. During an exchange semester you see quite many different kinds of weather conditions. I chose Spain because I wanted to develop my language skills in Spanish and get to know the culture. Madrid and UAM were chosen among the different universities mainly because the offered courses seemed interesting. My first criteria was to find equivalent courses to the two compulsory ones taking place during the semester that I was going to be gone (Biophysics and Materials science). UAM filled this requirement. In Aalto I study Bioinformation technology so I chose UAM mainly because it was recommended for my program. Now thinking the recommendation probably was made more with biotechnology in mind which was not necessarily the field of bioinformation technology that I am most interested in. However, later on I discovered that UAM offers an IT major called Biomedical Informatics. The major and its courses sounded very interesting and this was the final factor that made me list UAM as my first choice for my exchange university. Preparations before exchange The application process to get the final admission to the receiving university was very easy. At this point I had to change my learning agreement a few times. At one point I also was informed that I did not have a place on one course that I really needed to do while on exchange. However, this was negotiated between the coordinators of Aalto and UAM and in the end the situation got solved and I was enrolled in all the courses I needed and wanted to do. The paper work of the Erasmus grant was also very simple. I applied for a change in my monthly student allowance (Opintotuki) which was fast and simple as well. There was for example no need to deliver my rental agreement because the living allowance (asumislisä) will be decided based on the country rather than your actual rental agreement like in Finland. As Spain also belongs to the European Union, the other preparations before the exchange were very easy. As a Finnish citizen there was no need to apply for a visa. I just reported to KELA that I would temporarily reside outside Finland for a student exchange and got a decision that I would remain in the social security system of Finland. I also extended my private traveller s insurance to cover my whole stay which for me was just filling in a short questionnaire about my health and paying the fee for the additional months. This of course depends in you insurance company. Practicalities during exchange Accommodation During my semester I lived in the university residence on campus. The campus is about minutes away from the center of Madrid by train which proved to be a bit impractical. The last train was at 11.27pm which at first made it a bit challenging to participate in the evening social activities that in Spain often start considerably later than in Finland. However, in the end I enjoyed my stay and always

4 found a way to participate whenever I wanted to. On the other hand I avoided the stress of travelling to campus by public transport for my classes in the morning rush hour traffic. Living at the residence was certainly an experience. For exchange students I would still rather recommend staying at the center because it is more conveniently close to all the activities and events and also often a more economical option. Public transport The public transport in Madrid works very well in general although the metro and train system gets quite full, hectic and stressful during rush hours which means letting go of the Finnish need for personal space. Under 26-year-olds get the travel card for 20 euros a month (this was the case in spring 2016 so it is worth checking the current situation) which includes all the zones of the community of Madrid and even some cities outside such as Toledo. This was a very good deal and it saved me a lot of money and trouble. To get the travel card, you should make an appointment in one of the offices you can find on bigger metro stations. In theory a pre-booked appointment is recommended but there are also offices such as the one in Sol that have accepted people without a booking. Bank account I also had to open a local bank account to be able to pay my rent (paying it from my Finnish account would have been possible but I preferred not to complicate things). There was a Santander office on campus. They were very used to dealing with international students and opening an account was easy. I even got a MasterCard and online banking, only I had to close the account before leaving the country. Having a bank account actually proved quite useful because it allowed me to pull out money without commission. In Spain most banks charge commission when pulling out money with another bank s card. However, this did not seem to apply to foreign cards or at least with my Finnish card I only paid the commission to my bank in Finland. If your landlord does not require an account to pay the rent, I think you can get by only with a Finnish account as well. Finland and Spain both being in the euro zone make things simpler. Healthcare University healthcare exists in some universities, at least in UAM. However, foreign students are often not entitled to use it due to the fact that only degree students pay a certain enrollment fee. Nevertheless, EU citizens are entitled to free public healthcare the same way as Spanish citizens. You should have the European healthcare card (Eurooppalainen sairaanhoitokortti) to be able to access the services. The card can very easily be ordered from KELA as long as you do it well in advance before leaving Finland. The university also required the card or proof of another type of healthcare coverage when enrolling. Based on where you live, you ll be assigned to a healthcare center. I never found out whether it would have been possible to change it like it is in Finland. You can book an appointment beforehand by phone or a smartphone app or you can just show up asking for an appointment. You will need the European Healthcare card and a passport and they will register your data every time you come for an

5 appointment. Based on my experience the services work very well and you get an appointment very fast. Dentists are mostly private so you can google for one that sounds suitable for you. In bigger cities, like Madrid, there are English speaking dentists that you can contact if you doubt your Spanish in such situations. Even though EU citizens have a right to get healthcare, it is a good idea to have a travaller s insurance. The insurance covers many things that otherwise you would have to pay for yourself, mainly associated with transport back home in a situation of emergency. The cost of living In general the prices in Spain are lower than in Finland and for example food and drinks are very cheap. However, there is no system intended to support students such as student priced meals or apartments. Therefore, I actually was paying considerably more for my living costs in Madrid than I do in Finland. This of course depends on the case. The typical accommodation had furnished rooms whereas in Finland the typical student housing for Finns is unfurnished so the direct comparison is difficult. In Madrid the electricity and water were often not included in the rent and had to be paid separately which was for example my case. A lunch at Aalto is 2.60 euros with a student card whereas in UAM the cost was 5.30 euros for everyone independent of the student status. I have to point out that the lunch in UAM included two dishes and a dessert unlike in Aalto. However I did not really benefit from such a large meal because I could never finish it. In conclusion, rents are often higher in Madrid because student housing doesn t exist the same way. However, in general food, drink and going out are cheaper so in the end it depends on your situation whether your budget will be larger than in Finland. Studies Before my arrival I had chosen 5 courses (30 credits in total). During my stay there were no changes in my learning agreement and I completed all the credits I had planned on completing. I had courses from two different faculties/schools. I had two Bachelor level courses from the Faculty of Science (Facultad de Ciencias): Biophysics (6 ECTs) Materials Science (6 ECTs) In addition I had three Master level courses from the Technological Faculty (Escuela Politecnica Superior): Characterization of Biological Networks and Topologies (6 ECTs) Biodevices (6 ECTs) Biomedical Image Processing and Its Applications (6 ECTs) Of these five courses Biomedical Image Processing and Its Applications was taught in English and the rest in Spanish. At first, I was quite nervous about studying in a language that I was not fluent in. I had studied Spanish for 2.5 years until the course Español 5 in Aalto. Studies did consume more energy than

6 in Finland where the courses are in Finnish or English but in the end everything went well and I passed all the courses. As a tip, I would advise everyone not to be too stressed about studying in a new language. I am happy I took the leap and decided to go to a non-english speaking country. The teaching and evaluation methods were varying depending on the course. In Biophysics we had three partial exams, exercises to be handed in and a final group project. In Materials science the grade consisted of a presentation on a chosen materials science related topic and a final exam. The Master courses did not have an actual exam but the grades were given based on the assignments completed during the course, a group project and/or a final presentation. For me the most striking difference still was the different schedule. My classes started very late compared to what I am used to in Finland and also continued a lot later. I didn t have class on Friday but all the other days I started at On Mondays I finished early at but the rest of the days I had classes until or At the beginning I had a bit of a hard time adapting to the new rhythm but in the end it was ok. However, not all programs are so heavily weighted towards the evenings. Many of my friends had also morning classes. In Biophysics the group was large (about people). In Materials science and Biomedical Image Processing and Its Applications we were about 10 people and in the rest 5-6 students in the class. These small group sizes allowed us to have very personalized tuition and especially I, as a foreigner, felt like I would have gotten enough support if I had needed it. In Biomedical Image Processing and Its Applications the group was very international, in Biophysics there were a few other foreigners but in the rest of courses I was the only international, non-spanish speaking student. The concept of having course assistants did not really exist in such small groups and therefore we had a lot of direct interaction with the professor who was both lecturing and giving the exercises. I had quite an informal relationship with all my professors so I found it very easy to ask questions and talk about interesting topics. The process of transferring the credits to Aalto is still ongoing but I will have the bioinformation technology compulsory courses biophysics (Biofysiikka) and basics of materials science (Materiaalitieteen perusteet) replaced by the equivalent courses I did while on exchange. The other three of the courses I did in UAM will be allocated into the electives of my bachelor s degree. Freetime In my free time I, for example, participated in many events organized by ESN (Erasmus Student Network). They are an organization that aims at helping the adaptation of exchange students by organizing them different social and cultural activities. One activity that I enjoyed especially much was a weekly language exchange evening Café Lingua where you could gather to have a drink and practice languages in a relaxed environment. Additionally I did a lot of sight-seeing and went out to cool cafes and restaurants with friends. I did not have time to participate in a Spanish course which now thinking would have been a good idea. However, my course schedules made it difficult. I also travelled quite a lot during my stay. I participated trips organized by ESN such as the national event in Sevilla as well as travelled with friends. Towards the end of my stay I also travelled alone. In the end I think I sampled Spain quite nicely getting to know regions in the north such as Cantabria, various

7 locations in Andalucía including both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts as well as the east coast such as Barcelona. There are good high-speed train connections that allow you to travel from Madrid to many cities in 2-3 hours. However, trains are normally expensive in Spain. During my last month I bought an Interrail one country pass that allowed me to access the trains a lot cheaper. I also got to know the community of Madrid quite well thanks to the monthly public transport card that included all the zones. General experience As a country Spain is one of the most popular Erasmus destinations and this year Madrid got even voted to be the best Erasmus city. Based on my experience I can very well see why. I had a very good experience and I made memories and friends for a life time. It certainly was not easy being in a foreign country the language of which I did not speak very fluently to start with but in the end I learned a lot. It was good to see how things are done in another university. Working life is these days largely about adaptation to changing situations and I think an exchange semester teaches you just that. The way things are done in Aalto is not the only way to do things. First you get frustrated about small things but in the end you realize that it s not better, it s not worse, it s just different.
