2 Nourishment for the Soul The Department Religious and Pastoral Studies at the College Mount St. Joseph is pleased to present our 12th annual. Join us for a week guest speakers, academic courses and renewing reflection that will deepen your understanding spirituality in today s world. Our theme this year addresses how we speak about God and how those words can transform the way each us connects with our faith and how we minister to others. Courses are fered for undergraduate, graduate or CEU credit; courses may also be audited for no credit. On-campus housing is available. Who Should Attend Institute courses and lectures will benefit both pressionals working in pastoral and spiritual care, as well as individuals who want to renew and grow their spiritual connections. Over the years the Institute has attracted people from all over the country, including: Lead and associate pastors Chaplains Lay ministers Youth leaders Worship directors Health care pressionals Religious educators Social workers Counselors Adults who want to explore personal spirituality

3 Guest Lectures These presentations, free and open to the public, are held at EarthConnection, a beautifully innovative building created from recycled materials, on the grounds adjacent to campus. Keynote Speaker Daring God-Talk in Pastoral Care and Lay Ministry Monday, June 25, noon 1 p.m. Carolyn Bohler is lead pastor Redlands First United Methodist Church in California, a position she attained in That same year brought the publishing her book, God the What? What Our Metaphors for God Reveal about Our Beliefs in God. Previously she served as senior pastor at Aldersgate UMC in Tustin, Calif., after a 20-year career as pressor pastoral theology and counseling at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. An accomplished writer books and articles on a wide range theological topics, Dr. Bohler also has produced and/or appeared in a number TV and video productions on issues faith. She holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from UCLA and both a seminary degree and doctorate from Claremont. Guest Speakers Marge Kloos, SC, D.Min. Women s Spiritual Longing in a Transforming World Tuesday, June 26, noon 1 p.m. Marge Kloos, SC, D.Min., is the dean the Division Arts and Humanities at the College Mount St. Joseph, and an associate pressor in the Department Religious and Pastoral Studies. She has taught courses in ministry, pastoral care, eco-spirituality, and systematic theology in degree programs as well as lay ministry development programs. She holds a doctorate ministry with a concentration in pastoral care and a master s degree in theological studies, and has done research in cross-cultural spiritual care. In 2008, she served as a scholar at Tantur Ecumenical Center in Jerusalem, studying the implications intergenerational trauma for women s spirituality. Ken Czillinger, M.Div. Pastoral Care in the Hospice Setting Wednesday, June 27, noon 1 p.m. Ken Czillinger, M.Div., is an instructor in the Department Religious and Pastoral Studies at the College Mount St. Joseph. He brings to the classroom decades experience in pastoral care, including 12 years as a bereavement manager for VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in Cincinnati. He has written extensively on bereavement and has formed more than 20 support groups for the bereaved including groups for widowed persons, children and teenagers, as well as those who have experienced miscarriages and stillbirths. In his honor, the Father Ken Czillinger Award is presented at the National Conference Parents Murdered Children (POMC) to a pressional who is supportive POMC and its mission.

4 Institute Courses The courses are held each day, June 25 through June 29, and are each worth three credit hours. Courses can be taken for graduate, undergraduate or CEU credit, as well as audited. Morning Courses: 8:30 11:30 a.m., Monday Friday God the What: What Our Metaphors for God Reveal about Our Beliefs in God REL 382/582 Examine the language we use in describing God and how that language impacts our understanding and belief about God. Life Through Death REL 215/563 Ken Czillinger, M.Div. The center this course is the Christian understanding the Paschal Mystery the belief life through death. Discussion will also center on becoming more comfortable with helplessness in the face death, the mourning process, why bad things happen to good people, children and death, and the value support groups. Participants will have opportunities to talk with bereaved persons and local pressionals about suicide, murdered children, cancer, stillbirth and miscarriage, and life as a widowed person. Addiction and the Spiritual Life REL 228/528 Nicki Verploegen, Ph.D. Despite the human capacity to create and adapt, people and society can become vulnerable to attachments and thus to addictions. We will study how the particular manifestations addiction are intimately connected to systems that serve as the primary instructor on how to attain ultimate purpose and meaning in life. We will explore the role spirituality in leading us to God s healing love, illumination and reconciliation. Afternoon Courses: 1:30 4:30 p.m., Monday Friday Faith Crisis and Adult Development REL 212/RPS 527 Connie Widmer, Ph.D. The experience crisis is an important time in the development self, faith and personal spirituality. Students will examine each these terms in detail faith, crisis, self, spirit drawing on both psychological and theological resources. The potential impact crisis on individual faith/spiritual development and sense self and the way that faith and self may shape the response to crisis will be explored through reading, writing, video presentations, and class discussions. Emphasis will be placed on understanding this information for use in the practice ministry. Feminist Womanist Theology & Spirituality/Feminist Spirituality REL 214/RPS Marge Kloos, SC, D.Min. Feminist theology examines the impact patriarchy on the spirituality men and women. Beginning with an exploration into Christian archetypes, the course builds to a consideration the relationship between gender and spirituality. Students will then examine historical responses to sexism within Christianity, including a growing body literature by Womanist and Mujerista theologians. Theological Health Care Ethics ETH:REL 252 Joe Zalot, Ph.D. This introduction to Christian health care ethics explores foundational issues such as the nature morality, the distinction between philosophical and theological ethics, and the importance rightly formed conscience. We then focus on specific medical issues such as abortion, artificial methods conception, genetic testing/cloning, stem cell research, and euthanasia. For each these issues, we will discuss the underlying moral principles and then seek to articulate an appropriate Christian response to them. Students will be challenged to appropriate into their own lives the lessons learned.

FINANCIAL AID/MINISTRY TUITION GRANT Financial aid is available to all students enrolled at the Mount, with priority given to those demonstrating financial need. Any student requesting financial aid must complete a FAFSA form; the Mount s code is A special grant is available to any student enrolled in the graduate program in spiritual and pastoral care who is a paid or volunteer minister serving in a congregation, hospital, health care facility, social service agency, diocese, or educational institution. This College Mount St. Joseph Ministry Tuition Grant reduces tuition during the summer semester to $300 per credit hour, and tuition in all other semesters to $340 per credit hour. Verification employment/volunteer service and submission an FAFSA form are required. The Sisters Charity Scholarships for Women in Graduate Education and Religious Pastoral Studies are available to female students who plan to enroll for 12 credit hours and who demonstrate financial need.
