Rigorous academic qualifications An effective foundation for progression into Higher Education Ensure that students learn skill sets required for a range of future careers - independent research - power of analysis - critical thinking - presentation of argument. Traditional Professional skills

20 Vocational alternatives at KS5 Alternative providers Getting the right students on the right courses A Levels can be a pressurised option for those who are not academically able Other courses at KS5 are more practical in nature, are course work assessed and include work placements

21 Alternative Key Stage 5 courses BTEC BTEC stands for Business and Technology Education Council BTECs are designed as specialist workrelated qualifications eg business, engineering and ICT. A good option for students wishing to focus on specific careers

22 Alternative Key Stage 5 courses BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to A levels in terms of HE progression Narrows HE pathway Students who meet the common entry criteria have either: a BTEC or related qualification at level 2 relevant work experience a general level of education equivalent to at least four of five A*- to C-grade GCSEs.

27 How are BTEC assessed? BTEC courses assessed internally Students work is assessed during the course, with each individual unit graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Students can analyse and improve their own performance

28 Case studies In 2015, Gordon s had 7 students progress from Year 11 to Vocational BTEC courses at Godalming and Farnborough Technology College.

29 Alternative KS5 Options: What is an Advanced Apprenticeship? Work-based learning programme Lasts between 1-4 years Generates a Weekly wage Part work place, part College or all in house

31 Advanced Apprenticeships At least five GCSEs grades A*-C for entry Equivalent to gaining two A-level passes. Technical certificates or qualifications (depending on your type of apprenticeship). Next Steps to a Higher Apprenticeship.
