3 The New Curriculum New A levels 3/4 subjects 2016 all by New A levels no link AS and A2 Will sit AS levels in Terminal exams Study three/ four subjects for two years

4 Weekly Structure: Attendance pm school time All mornings in by 8.30am except Tues A and Mon B Setting up an independent routine! From Term 2 can sign out in afternoon if no lessons

5 Supervised Study All students with 3 subjects at least 4 hours per week Optional for others Can be used as intervention Register with teacher and work silently Bring own work

6 Prep/ Independent Study Min. 2 hours per week task-led work set per subject. Most to be completed in school. Some additional hw tasks. Overall, 1 hour of teaching = 1 hour of independent work. E.g 4 A levels = 16 hours per week = 16 hours of prep/study.

11 Balancing Life Outside School >10 hours paid employment a week affects results No term-time holidays incl. music festivals! Term 6 is an academic term Use holidays for work experience/ life skills as well as relaxation!

12 A few myths It s OK, I don t have to go in today I have no lessons All students are expected to be on site throughout the school day. Supervised study. My teacher is away so I don t have to go in All teachers leave cover work to be completed in the classroom.

13 A few myths.. I m finding it too hard to do four subjects, if I drop to three I ll do better.. Often not true, too much non-contact time is harder to manage. It s OK, in the Sixth Form you can wear whatever you want Smart casual and not extreme

15 Work Experience at Hayesfield

16 What? Work experience is any experience that a person gains while working in a specific field or occupation, but the expression is widely used to mean a type of volunteer work that is commonly intended for young people often students to get a feel for professional working environments.

17 Why? When you leave sixth form you will be leaving into an incredibly competitive marketplace regarding jobs, regardless of whether you attend University or not. Anything you do towards your own employability before you have to enter the world of work will benefit you greatly in the future

30 Where to start Think about what makes them stand out in an exciting and positive way. Show enthusiasm for the course they are applying for and list supporting evidence to back this up. Extra curricular activities and relevant work experience. Skills they can use on the course leadership, communication, team work for example. Encourage them to ask you for more ideas. Allow plenty of time.

33 Decisions and replies Provider decisions: Unsuccessful Unconditional offer Conditional offer qualifications and achievements and/or UCAS Tariff points Once all decisions are received, they can hold up to two offers: One as their firm choice One as their insurance choice (if they want to) All other offers are declined Track will show their reply date.

34 Other options Extra 24 Feb 4 July If all five choices have been used and they have no offers/rejected all offers. Clearing from early-july If there are no offers, or have applied after 30 June deadline. Adjustment If they ve gained better results than the conditional offer they hold, they could apply for a different course or university.

36 How can you support the application process? Use the parents/guardians section of the UCAS website/parent Guide publication and sign up for the newsletter. Offer to attend open days, you may have a different perspective. Don t book family holidays at key times. Make sure they read everything carefully that is sent to them. Support your son/daughter s management of their application.
