PHARMACY Navigate your future

PHARMACY Pharmacy is the science concerned with therapeutic substances their discovery, origin and nature, their development into medicines and their use in disease prevention and treatment. Pharmacy also denotes the profession which uses its unique knowledge of medicines in the service of society. A career in pharmacy can be versatile and highly rewarding. Pharmacy graduates can choose to work mainly with people, by using their unique knowledge and skills in patient care. Pharmacists supply medicines, provide medicines, health information and advice, and help to manage long-term illness. Pharmacy graduates can also choose to focus mainly on products pharmacists hold key responsibilities in the Malaysian pharmaceutical industry and are in constant demand. Skilled graduates are needed in clinical research, in formulation research and development, production, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and marketing. Our MPharm programme is a collaborative programme with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Students will spend the first phase of their studies at the International Medical University (IMU) and will transfer to the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences for their second phase. Being the first pharmacy school in Malaysia to provide such a collaborative study opportunity, this programme has resulted in a very successful partnership which had graduated over 1,100 alumni since Many of the graduates now hold senior positions as pharmacists in national and international organisations. There are also a significant number who has completed postgraduate training and are now successful scientists. Together with our partner in Glasgow, we provide an opportunity for students to study using teaching material from University of Strathclyde. The award is the MPharm Integrated Masters degree and this degree is thought of highly in the United Kingdom. A/PROF MALLIKARJUNA RAO PICHIKA Associate Professor and Coordinator (MPharm) BPharm (India), MPharm (India), PhD (India) The pharmacy profession has evolved over the past fourty years in response to the growth in medication use and patients demand. The present pharmacists role and responsibility does not lie merely in dispensing of medication but in the provision of patient focus care such as providing drug information and drug therapy recommendation. The BPharm (Hons) is designed to meet these needs by producing knowledgeable, competent, and caring graduates of pharmacy with lifelong learning skills, ie. the pharmacists of tomorrow. The programme is delivered by a group of qualified academic staff using an appropriate mix of teaching and learning methods. WONG PEI SE Lecturer and Coordinator of BPharm (Hons) BSc Pharm (Strathclyde), MSc (Strathclyde), RPh

01 What is the structure of the programme? BPharm The BPharm (Hons) programme uses an innovative curriculum developed entirely by the IMU School, completed in four years (8 semesters), and is undertaken in Malaysia. Credit transfer options are also available for this. The curriculum is largely based on Body Systems, and integrates the study of these systems in health and disease with the study of drug treatment. An entire semester in the fourth year is devoted to research and another semester to supervised practise. MPharm This collaborative programme offers the experience of high quality overseas study leading to the award of the MPharm Integrated Masters using the teaching methods of the Strathclyde degree. Two options are available: a) 2½ + 1 Two and a half years of study (Part A, 5 semesters) at the IMU Bukit Jalil campus, followed by 13 months (Part B, 3 semesters) at the Strathclyde School of Pharmacy, where IMU and UK students are taught together in the final academic year (Year 4). b) Two years of study (Part A, 4 semesters) at the IMU Bukit Jalil campus, followed by 2 years (Part B, 4 semesters) at the Strathclyde School of Pharmacy, where IMU and UK students are taught together in Years 3 and 4 of the course. The Strathclyde School and the IMU share an educational philosophy that aims at developing skills and competence in self-directed learning, problem-solving, team working and professionalism. The Strathclyde School is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council and its degree is recognised for its quality, for being up-to-date and studentcentred. The Scottish National Higher Education Funding Council has given the Strathclyde School an Excellent rating for teaching, complimented it on its high level of research achievement and commended it for the excellent relationship between faculty and students. DEGREE Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) (IMU) or Pharmacy Degree from Partner Universities (BPharm) or Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) (IMU-Strathclyde) KEY FACTS TOTAL DURATION BPharm: 4 years MPharm: 3½ - 4 years INTAKES BPharm: June and September MPharm: January BPharm only: Credit transfer options to the University of Queensland, Australia and University of Otago, New Zealand*. * Students who choose to transfer to the University of Queensland and University of Otago are required to take a bridging course before joining the partner pharmacy schools

IMU students on the collaborative course use the same learning materials as those who undertake the whole course in Glasgow. Examinations are set and marked by the IMU School and validated by the Strathclyde School. A well established scheme brings at least 5 Strathclyde lecturers on teaching secondments to IMU each year. Final year results consistently show that IMU and Strathclyde students achieve the same standards. Key aspects of course delivery are subject to stringent internal and external audit to ensure that IMU based students receive a comparable educational experience to their Scottish counterparts. 02 WHAT ARE THE KEY FEATURES OF THE PHARMACY PROGRAMME? BPharm Designed around a progressive increase in student-centred and self-directed learning, and a corresponding decrease in didactic and teacher-centred activity Largely based on body systems: Integrates the study of these systems in health and disease with the study of drug treatment Progressive development of skills and competencies using simulations and supervised practice Systematic exposure to community, hospital and industrial pharmacy, culminating in extended clinical pharmacy placements Devotion of an entire 4th Year Semester to research aimed at inculcating rigour and scientific ethos MPharm (2½ + 1) An eight-semester programme taught over 3½ calendar years 2½ calendar years (5 semesters) spent at IMU and 1 calendar year (3 semesters) at University of Strathclyde Identical curriculum for both IMU and UK students Student-centred learning Opportunities for postgraduate studies at international level MPharm (2 + 2) An eight-semester programme taught over 4 calendar years 2 calendar years (4 semesters) spent at IMU and 2 calendar years (4 semesters) at University of Strathclyde Identical curriculum for IMU and UK students Student-centred learning Opportunities for postgraduate studies at international level Eligibility for direct entry to pre-registration training in the United Kingdom

THE UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCYLDE The University of Strathclyde was founded in 1796 and is Scotland s third largest, with some 14,000 students from more than 90 countries. The University is recognised as a centre of teaching excellence in Scotland and stands among the best in the world. Its pharmacy course is noted for its progressive and innovative curriculum. The overall quality of educational provision in pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde has been judged excellent by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. The particular strengths of the School were considered to be the academic environment; the commitment and motivation of teaching staff; the high quality of student-support materials and the commitment to student-centred learning; the clear specification of module aims and objectives; the range of teaching and learning methods employed; and the strong scientific basis of the course. The website for the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences is University of Strathclyde

04 AM I GUARANTEED A PLACE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE? You qualify for a place by passing all the examinations in the IMU portion of the course. 05 IS ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED IN GLASGOW? All transferring students stay in a University of Strathclyde Hall of Residence, Thomas Campbell Court or James Blyth Court. These Halls are within easy walking distance of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, where most classes are held. 06 WHAT IS THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION? The medium of instruction is English. Students whose pre-university education is not in English are strongly recommended to improve their proficiency by attending English classes before entering IMU. 07 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I GRADUATE? Registration in Malaysia Graduates are eligible for registration with the Pharmacy Board of the Ministry of Health. The requirements are: 1. Completion of the Provisionally Registered Pharmacist training year and experience; and passing the Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination. This year is undertaken only at government health-service institutions, which include district and general hospitals, the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau and teaching hospitals such as Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, University Malaya Medical Centre and Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The Pharmacy Jurisprudence examination assesses knowledge and application of Malaysian law regulating the sale and supply of medicines. 2. Completion of a one-year period of government service, which entitles the graduate to full registration. Current information about registration requirements may be found at the website of the Pharmaceutical Services Division of the Ministry of Health, Registration in the United Kingdom To become a pharmacist in the UK, you must first undertake a four-year Integrated MPharm programme which has been approved by the General Pharmaceutical Council. All graduates who want to be registered pharmacists then complete one year of paid training in community or hospital pharmacy (six months may be spent in industry). Successful completion of examinations, set by the General Pharmaceutical Council, allows graduates to apply for registration as a pharmacist in UK. Graduates of the option may apply for pre-registration training during their final year. Graduates of the 2½ + 1 option may apply for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council after they have registered with the Malaysian Pharmacy Board. Current information is available at the website of the General Pharmaceutical Council, Pre-registration training places cannot be guaranteed. Many UK pharmacy graduates choose to undertake preregistration training in the United Kingdom s National Health Service (NHS), which is funded by UK government. The current economic situation means that funding for individuals from outside the UK and the European Union (EU) is under review. Non-EU citizens applying for pre-registration training jobs will have to meet the requirements of United Kingdom immigration regulations. These regulations are administered by the UK Border Agency. 08 When do I apply to enter IMU? You can apply using forecast or actual results.

The International Medical University (IMU) began in 1992 as the International Medical College, or IMC, Malaysia s first private medical college. IMC became a University in 1999, but the University has remained true to key elements of the IMC vision, which are to widen access to professional healthcare education, and to use innovative, integrated and student-centred means in providing that education. This vision required strong links to be forged, from the outset, with reputable Partner Medical Schools committed to excellence and who share our educational philosophy. It was our progressive, systems based, integrated medical curriculum that first caught the imagination of our Partner Medical Schools, and today we collaborate with partner universities in Australasia, North America, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This successful collaboration then expands to the pharmacy and health sciences programmes at world-class universities in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and China. Since 1999, the University s growth and development has been in developing clinical schools in Seremban, Batu Pahat and Kuala Pilah, our own Honours degree courses in Pharmacy and Nursing, and in establishing research as a core activity, together with development of postgraduate research Masters and PhD programmes. We are already the preferred private school for medicine and pharmacy in Malaysia. Our growth has been supported by heavy investment in infrastructure development and expansion at Bukit Jalil and Seremban, and in the recruitment of staff of high calibre. In 2008, we have introduced Honours degree courses in Dentistry, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical Biotechnology, Psychology, Biomedical Science and in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In common with our MBBS, BPharm and BNursing, these courses have been designed from first principles by our faculty. Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons) was introduced in 2009, a programme targeted solely for registered nurses to upgrade their qualification from diploma level to a degree level. In 2010, we introduced Chiropractic programme, the first of its kind and only complete educational programme in Malaysia as well as in all of Southeast Asia. Then, in February 2011, IMU launched the Chinese Medicine programme. The programme will focus on combining medical education and scientific research, offering the full array of medical both Chinese Medicine and Western. To date, the University offers undergraduate degree programmes in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Nursing, Nursing Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Psychology, Biomedical Science, Medical Biotechnology, Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine as well as postgraduate degrees MSc Medical Sciences or Community Health by research, PhD in Medical & Health Sciences by research and MSc (Public Health). We believe our courses to be progressive and innovative, and we strive to use best practice in their delivery and assessment. We continue to seek to widen access to healthcare education, and to grow into a centre of healthcare educational excellence in the Asia-Pacific region.
