7 WHY? INVALID reasons Because others want you to go Because your mates are going Because you can t think what else to do

8 WHY? VALID reasons - Because you enjoy studying - Because it s required for the career you want - Because you ll have more career choice - Because it will aid promotion prospects - Because of the unique experience it will give you.

9 Immediate gains of going - Independence Meeting a wide range of people Enjoying a wider range of challenges & opportunities Gaining a wider outlook on life. You can develop new interests, take sports further, enjoy lots of subsidised activities.

10 Whilst you are there. You meet people from different countries, cultures & creeds, make life-long friendships & relationships & experience an environment that is freer & more lively than any or most that you are likely to get elsewhere or again.

11 Longer term gains- Average graduate is estimated to be about 38% better off by his/her early 30s. Over a whole career to earn between 100k - 300k more By 2017 it is estimated that 56% more jobs will require people to hold graduate level qualifications

12 Longer term gains - It is also claimed that on average graduates live longer & are healthier, happier, less prone to depression, more likely to exercise & more likely to make a significant & satisfying contribution to the community around them.

29 What is UCAS? Central online applications service Lists the 37,000 courses that you can choose from over 370 providers The only method of entry to UK degree programmes Can apply to up to five universities/courses with one application Choice restrictions: Medicine, Veterinary, Dentistry max 4 choices Oxford or Cambridge 29

30 Timeline March August Start to do your research. Make your 5 final choices September 1 st Applications open on the UCAS Website October 15 th Oxford, Cambridge, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Medicine deadlines November - December January Interviews and Applicant days take place. Universities will start to make offers 15 th Application Deadline February April Interviews and Applicant days take place. Universities will continue to make offers May June July 7 th - If you applied by the January deadline all your institutions will have made you an offer Declare your firm and insurance choices August September - October 13 th Results day Confirmation and arrival 30

31 UCAS Form Your UCAS form will include: Personal details Education Teacher s reference Employment Make sure your address is sensible

32 Applying Good applicants often apply early! Spend enough time on your application Give time for reference to be written Show commitment to subject Offers made on first come first served basis 32

33 Offers Understand the offers that you can receive Conditional (C) You must meet the requirements of the university these will usually be the entry requirements Unconditional (UC) you have met the offer and have a place at the university regardless of any results Unconditional/Conditional (UC/C) You must meet some requirements You may be asked to attend an interview or an audition and you may be made an offer based on this 33

34 Offers Your offers will appear on UCAS Track. This is where you can track your application to your 5 choices The university will send you a confirmation letter and any other information that you may need You may be invited to an Applicant Day Chance to look around the university and attend subject specific talks Talk to academics View accommodation and the facilities in smaller groups and attend seminars 34

35 Firm or Insurance Once you have received your offers and the deadline has passed you must decide on your Firm (1 st ) and Insurance (2 nd ) choice universities This is all completed via UCAS Be realistic: Your insurance should be lower entry requirements 35

36 Results UCAS Track will update as soon as the university has received your results Once you have met the university s offer you must confirm your place via UCAS Clearing This is where you may not have received any offers or your results weren t exactly what you expected then you will be able to look for universities still offering places If you have done better than expected then you can opt into Adjustment If you've met and exceeded conditions for your firm choice 36

Stage 3: Online Numerical and Verbal Reasoning Tests-similar to applying for jobs / University. Stage 4: First Round Interview- written exercise and interview on behaviours. Applications open on 1 st September Internal Deadline for applications for Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary is 15 th September Year 13 - October 2016 UCAS Deadline for Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and vet is 15 th October All other application forms should be completed by the internal deadline of 15 th October
