1 Grad Dates Esquimalt High School Grade 12 Newsletter February 2016 Recognition Ceremony at UVic Auditorium- Monday, June 6, 2016 at 6:45pm Grad Dinner & Dance at the Ward Room at CFB Esquimalt- Saturday, June 11, 2016 Tickets for the Grad Dinner & Dance- On sale in the Spring- please listen to announcements. The Aboriginal Grad Recognition Ceremony- Thursday, June 2nd at SJ Willis Auditorium. Grad Checklist ü Post-secondary early admission deadlines- UVic: Feb. 28th & Camosun: May 15 th ü Complete PSI form on-line (will happen in classes) ü Pay Grad Fee - $40 payable to accounts clerk in the office Grad Categories Students must be in the position to graduate at the Term 3 report card, or they will not be eligible for the recognition ceremony. Students must be passing all courses on the April report card and be at least 50% through any distributed learning courses. Grade 12 students are assigned a Grad Mentor to monitor their academic progress through the year. Grad Assemblies & Deadlines Next assembly- Wednesday, April 27, Period 3 o Final check for Grad eligibility o Nomination forms for valedictorians distributed o Grad song request forms distributed Friday, April 29 th - Valedictorian nomination forms & song requests due Wednesday, May 4 lunch in theatre- Valedictorian speeches/voting & Grad song voting Grad Ceremony Rehearsals- THESE ARE MANDATORY!!!! Wednesday June 1st, Period 2- First rehearsal for Recognition Ceremony Friday, June 4 th, Period 4- Second rehearsal and gown/cap distribution Monday, June 6 th, all day- UVic rehearsal for ceremony

2 Recognition Ceremony at UVic Ticket Information Tickets will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, March 31st ($10 each, 6 tickets per student). Do you want great seats? Purchase your tickets early! Want more than 6 tickets? You have to wait until the middle of May to give others an opportunity to purchase theirs. There are usually some left over, but they won t necessarily be in the same area of the auditorium as the tickets you purchased earlier. The Ceremony tickets are processed through the UVic Ticket Centre. This allows parents and students to obtain tickets easily through one of three ways: 1. Web request on-line at There is a $2.50 per order fee in affect for on-line sales, and this includes the mailing of the tickets and parking pass if purchased. 2. Phone: (250) A $1.50 per order fee is charged for telephone sales, and this includes the mailing of tickets and parking pass(s) if purchased. 3. In person Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4:00pm. The Ticket Centre is located in the lobby of the University Centre B Wing where the Auditorium is located. There is a $1.50 fee for ordering tickets in person. You do not need to buy a Ceremony ticket for yourself, but you do need to buy a Dinner/Dance ticket. PLEASE ENSURE YOU REQUEST ANY REQUIRED WHEELCHAIR SEATING AT THE TIME OF ORDERING YOUR TICKETS. Parking Information A $2.25 flat fee for parking at UVic on evenings after 6pm is in place. Patrons purchasing tickets through the UVic Ticket Centre may also purchase a parking ticket, so they can avoid line-ups at the parking machine prior to the ceremony. Parking tickets purchased this way will be mailed with ceremony tickets. Financial Planning Approximate Costs of Grad. These costs are estimates and subject to change. Grad Fee- $40- Gowns, Ceremony rental, Certificates. Please pay ASAP. Guest tickets for ceremony- $10 per ticket. Ceremony reception & rental no cost for participants Dinner/Dance- $80 per ticket. Rental of Ward Room at CFB Esquimalt and dinner. Optional Tuxedo Rental for Dinner/Dance- $200 (approx.) Not required (suits or sports jackets are fine) Dress for Dinner/Dance- Options and creative ways to keep costs down. Transportation for Dinner/Dance- Definitely an extra. MAGIC WAND- Through the generous donations of the community, students have the use of a like-new outfit for the evening. Accessories are also provided. Please see a counsellor for further information, visit or call to make an appointment. Reminder: All students must pay the $40 grad fee to pay for the gown, etc. Fees can be paid to the Accounts Clerk in the office. Any student who is in financial difficulty can speak to any administrator or counsellor. Please remember that most activities are optional and all are a privilege for graduating students. Grad Transition Plan This is a mandatory 4 credit course that you must ensure is completed to meet graduation requirements. There are three components required to earn the four credits: 1. Daily Physical Activity (DPA)- students must complete and document a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate to intense physical activity. If you are enrolled in a PE course, Athletic Leadership or Dance, those hours will count as DPA. Students should document their hours weekly using either the DPA log Sheet or on-line through the Learn Now BC website. Both of these options appear as links on our school website: 2. Work Experience/Volunteer Hours- students are responsible for logging a minimum of 30 hours of community based volunteer work and/or paid work experience demonstrating employability skills or community involvement and responsibility. Students will be asked to bring documentation of their work experience to the exit interview. 3. Graduation Transition Plan- students are expected to explore and plan for options regarding their future education and career choices. Mandatory attendance at grad assemblies is part of your Transition Plan. Students must arrange an interview with a grad mentor during which they will discuss their Transition Plan and how it relates to their skills and attributes. 4 Dogwood District Scholarships Meeting is Wednesday March 30 th in room 111 at lunch. Due date for applications is April 29 th. The Dogwood scholarship recognizes excellence in: Fine Arts (Creative Writing, Visual Arts (including Media Arts), Performing Arts (including Dance, Drama & Music) Applied Skills (Business Education, Foods/Textiles, Information Communication Technology, Technology Education Physical Activity (not limited to Physical Education) Second Languages (including Aboriginal Languages) Service Esquimalt Scholarships/ School District Scholarships Meeting is Thursday, May 5 th in Room 111 at lunch. We have approximately 25 scholarships exclusively for Esquimalt students and approximately 15 scholarships exclusively for students graduating from public schools in School District #61. Due date for applications is June 10, Post-Secondary Updates Online Post-Secondary Institution (PSI) Selections Form PSI forms will be completed during class time in late March or in Scholarship Class. Note: Students proceeding to post-secondary in the school year MUST complete the PSI Form. Reminder: The electronic PSI Selections Form is now available online for students graduating this school year. An instructional document is available at: The instructions include snap shots of all the screens students will use to select PSIs. Students access the online form by logging into the Student Secure Web (SSW), and click the menu option Post-Secondary Institutions Selections. Students must complete the PSI Selections form by May 1, 2016 to have interim transcript information forwarded in mid-march to the BC Electronic PSIs list and to the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) institutions. Preliminary transcript information will not include interim marks for courses in progress. It will only include final marks for completed courses and a list of courses students are currently taking. Students must complete the PSI Selections form by July 15, 2016 to have final transcripts sent to the institutions. Camosun College Information Sessions Information Sessions are held the third Thursday of every month. These sessions put students and their parents in touch with the faculty and staff who teach Camosun courses. Find out about the programs and courses offered, prerequisites and costs. There is no charge to attend. Camosun offers program-specific or general information sessions. Visit the info session page for the program you're interested in for full details.

5 Applying to Camosun prior to the deadline provides a big advantage for three reasons: The applicant will be placed on the program waitlist immediately, rather than having to wait until all the admission requirements are complete. There is less paperwork for you because in most cases the student s grades will be sent electronically from the Ministry of Education to Camosun. Provisional admission will be offered, based on a review of final grades from any completed courses along with interim marks for courses that are still in progress. Students can apply now at Apply BC or applications can be found at BC University/College Websites: Admissions The first step to apply to a college or university is to research the application process. Each institute will have their own website which includes all necessary information for the admission process. The following list will guide you to the Admissions sections. Look under future students or prospective students on post secondary websites. You are an undergraduate student at university. Ms. Copeman has information on post-secondary education, career websites, scholarships, skilled trades, travel, as well as job and volunteer opportunities. The Career Centre hours are 9:00am 12:30 pm Monday to Friday. Career Centre NEWS There will be a District-Wide Career Fair on April 21st at SJ Willis. Buses will be leaving from Esquimalt High.
