4 PLACEMENT IN YEARS 8 TO 12 AT SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS Selective high schools cater for highly achieving academically talented students by providing an educationally enriched environment. These schools can provide intellectual stimulation by grouping talented students together, concentrating school resources and using specialised teaching methods. Agricultural high schools are selective high schools that emphasise the study of agriculture, with the residential sections giving priority to isolated students provided that their academic ability is comparable to that of their selective peers. Partially selective high schools have both selective and community enrolment. The Balmain and Leichhardt Campuses of Sydney Secondary College cater for students from Years 7 to 10. Students attending the Balmain or Leichhardt Campuses in Years 7 to 10 will generally proceed to the Blackwattle Bay Campus for Years 11 and 12. The virtual selective class provision (Xsel) is available only to students attending a government high school in Western NSW Region. The number of vacancies in Years 8 to 12 will vary across academic Years and from school to school. The complete list of selective high schools accepting Years 8 to 12 applications is shown at the back of this document. ENQUIRIES Enquiries about courses and programs offered by specific selective high schools as well as enquiries about selection criteria such as testing should be addressed to the schools concerned. School websites can be found on the last pages of this document. PRIORITY ORDER OF SCHOOLS If you are applying for more than one selective high school, you must list in the SCHOOL CHOICES section on page 2 of each application that you lodge, all of the schools you are applying for, in priority order. AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCY STATUS Candidates must normally be Australian citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent resident status in Australia. Information on Australian citizenship is available on the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs website at: au. Official evidence of Australian citizenship may be obtained by the issue of a Certificate of Evidence of Australian Citizenship. Citizens of New Zealand who are permanently settled in Australia are eligible for entry. Permanent residents of New Zealand are considered in the same manner as temporary residents of Australia. Applicants who do not meet these residency requirements at the time of applying but expect to meet them in the near future, are allowed to apply. Such applicants will have to show evidence that they meet all residency requirements before being offered a place. Applicants who are unable to meet the residency requirements but believe that there are extenuating circumstances applicable to their case may apply, provided that they are already living in Australia. Applicants who qualify for entry on academic grounds but do not meet the residency requirements, including those who hold diplomatic visas, will have the opportunity to appeal for special consideration through the appeals process (see page 4). All successful applicants will be required to show original documentation, such as a Certificate of Evidence of Australian Citizenship, birth certificates or visas, before enrolment can be finalised by the school. Offers or enrolments may be terminated if placement is made on the basis of false or misleading information. 2 Application for Years 8 to 12 for Selective High Schools in 2013
5 PLACEMENT IN YEARS 8 TO 12 AT SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Parents must be living in NSW by the beginning of the 2013 school year. If parents normally live in NSW but are temporarily out of the state, they should expect to return in the near future. Applications from parents who continue to live outside NSW after the 2013 school year begins will be considered only if there are vacancies after all suitable applicants from NSW have been placed. ENROLMENT POLICY The NSW Department of Education and Communities has a responsibility to assess and manage any risk of harm to its staff or students. This includes assessing and managing risks posed to students or staff at a school by any student. Where relevant, such situations will be dealt with in accordance with the Department s enrolment policies and procedures. Information for parents regarding enrolment is available at: edu.au/schoolfind/enrolment/parentsinfo.php COURSES OF STUDY Applicants should be aware that courses of study at selective high schools may not be the same as courses taken at the previous school. Students current courses will be taken into account when they are considered for placement. FAMILY PLACEMENT CLAIM You can make a family placement claim if a member of the immediate family (brother, sister or parent/ guardian) currently attends or previously attended the school. Where two or more students have equal results, the students with family placement claims will be given priority. For most students this will have little effect on the outcome. BOARDER PLACEMENT (AGRICULTURAL HIGH SCHOOLS ONLY) For boarder placement, extra consideration may be given to students who have brothers or sisters already attending the school. Special criteria apply for entry to residential agricultural high schools. These criteria are outlined on page 5. APPLICATION PROCEDURES Availability of application forms Further copies of this package are available from all selective high schools, school education group offices, and the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Placement Unit at Bankstown. They are also available on the Internet at: assessments/ selective8_12.php Acknowledgement of receipt of application Your application will be acknowledged in writing. You will also be notified if any further information or testing is required by the selection committee. Change of application details Please write to the selective high school(s) you have applied for if there is a change in details such as your child s name, address or school after you have sent your application form. You should also write to those schools if you want to withdraw your application. SELECTION PROCEDURES The number of vacancies at selective high schools in Years 8 to 12 will generally depend on the number of students who leave in the previous year. In some schools there may be no vacancies in some academic Years. Some schools may establish extra places in some academic Years. For each selective high school, a selection committee will decide on the students to be offered places and will establish a reserve list in priority order. The selection committee comprises at least three people, including the school education director as chairperson, the selective high school principal and a parent representative. The selection committee may ask for further information or arrange for additional assessment procedures if required. TESTING If it is considered necessary by the selection committee, students may be required to take a test. In this case, the school will provide you with reasonable notice of the time, date and place of the test. Where testing is conducted by the school, students found to be cheating risk disqualification from the test. Schools may request a test administration fee. NOTIFICATION OF DECISION You will be notified in writing about the outcome of your application. Some later offers may be made by telephone. Students may be (a) offered a place, (b) put on the reserve list, or (c) advised that they did not qualify for placement. This information will be provided by each school for which an application was made. RESPONSE TO OFFERS If you receive an offer, please respond to the school as soon as possible. If you do not respond within 14 days or within the time specified on your offer letter, it may be assumed that the offer has been declined. Where offers are made by telephone a response is generally required within 24 hours. Application for Years 8 to 12 for Selective High Schools in
6 PLACEMENT IN YEARS 8 TO 12 AT SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS If you will be away on holidays when offers are being made, you should leave contact details with the selective school(s) or delegate someone to respond on your behalf. If you accept the offer you will be sent an Authority to Enrol. For government high school students the principal will then arrange for the student s records to be transferred. Offers will be withdrawn if the student fails to enrol at the school at the beginning of the school year without providing a satisfactory explanation. Enrolment may not be deferred beyond the first day of Term 2, Any deferment must be negotiated with the principal. If you accept the offer then later change your mind, please tell the school so that the next eligible applicant can be offered the place. If you decline the offer, you will be sent a letter to confirm this. APPEALS If you wish to appeal against a decision of the selection committee, you should phone the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Placement Unit on (02) within 7 days of the date on the letter notifying you of the outcome. The Unit will send you an appeal form and notify the selective high school that an appeal is being lodged. You must then lodge the completed appeal form within 14 days of the date shown on the outcome letter to: The Manager Selective High School and Opportunity Class Placement Unit Locked Bag 5001 BANKSTOWN NSW 1885 In making an appeal, parents need to complete an appeal form which includes: factors which may have prevented the student from gaining a place any supporting material, where applicable. Appeals based on illness must include a medical certificate. For performance-based appeals, only evidence relating to performance in 2011 and 2012 will be considered. The Unit will convene the appeals panel and will notify selective high school principals and parents about the outcome of appeals. TRANSFERS AND REPEATING Students cannot automatically transfer between selective high schools. If a student is already enrolled at one selective high school and wants to go to another, the parents must fill out an application form 4 for entry to Years 8 to 12 and lodge it directly with the selective high school they want their child to attend. If the parents of a student currently enrolled in a selective high school wish their child to repeat the Year in 2013, they should discuss the matter with the principal before 30 June GENERAL SCHOOL AND SUBJECT CONTRIBUTIONS As with all government schools, tuition at selective high schools is free, but schools may ask for a voluntary contribution to cover services such as library, textbooks and curriculum-related resources. Schools may also ask for contributions to cover the purchase of materials in certain key learning areas and to cover costs associated with sports or excursions. Residential agricultural high schools charge boarding fees (see boarding fees on page 5). ENTRY TO RESIDENTIAL AGRICULTURAL HIGH SCHOOLS Priority for boarder placement in residential agricultural high schools will be given to geographically isolated students and then to other country students.
