7 What do I have to do to graduate?

8 Graduation Update House Bill 5 takes full effect this year. Beginning with the Class of 2015 and beyond, in order for your student to graduate AND walk across the stage, he or she must complete the following: Complete all graduation requirements for the Distinguished, Recommended, Minimum, Foundations, or Foundations plus Endorsement Plans. Successfully pass all STAAR End of Courses Exams for English I, Biology, Algebra I, English II, and U.S. History. 10 SENIOR CONFERENCES Counselors will be meeting with seniors several days during the fall to discuss: Credits Graduation requirements Post-secondary plans Senior Survey Conferences will last approximately 15 minutes. If you are unable to attend during your assigned time, please contact Mrs. Durham, our 11/12 counselor secretary, to reschedule.

11 GPA/Rank GPA s are calculated through the end of the year! Honor rankings are determined at the end of the 5 th six weeks. Many colleges require mid-year and end of year reports.

16 Steps for Choosing a College Explore college websites and check admission requirements Verify majors offered match interests Visit college campus in person Consider actual costs to attend Get answers to questions/concerns by visiting with local college representatives Check and stick to deadlines

17 College Visits Go to the attendance office to get the proper form. When you visit the college of your choice, make sure you get them to stamp the college visit form. Return the college visit form to the attendance office. You are given two days for college visits junior year and two senior year. They do not carry over.

18 APPLYING TO COLLEGE Application Guidelines: Meet ALL Deadlines! Apply early enough so you'll have time to review and compare scholarship and financial aid offers. Read the application instructions carefully and be sure you provide all of the required information and materials (high school transcripts or letters of recommendation). Don t forget to pay application fee and submit application! Respond to all requests for additional information immediately and keep records of your responses. Keep a file with a copy of your application and other materials, copies of letters from the colleges or universities, any Electronic IDs assigned, and copies of your letters to the schools.

24 How to Sign Up for Community/Junior College Lone Star College, HCC, San Jacinto Open enrollment anyone with diploma can go! Can transfer to univ. later Take unofficial H.S. transcript with you Fill out online application (registration) Take TSI test (if not exempt) Sign up for classes usually online Pay fees, purchase textbooks

25 TSI (Texas Success Initiative) Taken at college testing center Cost is $29 Placement test only, does not affect admission Test can be taken multiple times to enhance score and increase chances of taking creditbearing courses Determines which courses student will be allowed to register for Check with the college to see which scores are acceptable for college-bearing courses

26 Transcript Requests Order transcripts for college admission and scholarships Fill out form in the Registrar s Office Official Transcripts = $2.00 For those to be mailed Unofficial Transcripts = $1.00 Electronic Transcripts = FREE (For Texas schools accepting electronic transcripts) Allow 3 days for processing official transcripts

27 Lone Star College Transcripts Students who take dual-credit courses offcampus at Cy Fair College must request an official transcript online at Transcripts should be submitted to the Registrar as soon as the student has completed the course. Cy Creek will NOT automatically receive grades or transcripts from Lone Star College. Failure to submit transcript could result in delay of high school graduation!

28 Financial Aid FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be completed to receive money in the form of grants and loans. Universities and scholarship committees may require FAFSA before awarding scholarships. In the fall, apply for PIN number (student & parent). In the spring, complete application as soon after January 1st as possible. Money is awarded on first come, first served basis.

36 What other information do I need?

37 Letters of Recommendation Not necessary for most colleges! If a letter is needed, choose someone who knows you very well teacher, counselor, employer, club sponsor, etc. Written request must be given at least 3 weeks before letter is needed (MINIMUM). Write a thank you note after the letter is completed.

41 AP TESTING Registration for AP Exams will be in the Spring Semester beginning in January. Be sure you have created an account with College Board so you will be able to view your scores online in July. There will NOT be a paper copy sent to you. Available resources for AP Prep are on the AP student website. Be sure you send your AP scores to the college you plan to attend.
