As such, it is designed for practitioners and would-be practitioners across this spectrum who wish to engage with applied human rights. Starting framework The Human Rights Studies M.A. is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the academic study of human rights theory and practice. Students take courses offered by ISHR, as well as human rights courses offered by other departments, such as Anthropology, History, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology. Students may also take courses offered by other schools at Columbia, including the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia Law School, and the Mailman School of Public Health. The program, most of the core courses, and most of the faculty are in Political Science. Students explore urgent social issues related to topics, such as human security, labor, migration, children, family, education and the environment. The course work in the program is theoretically and methodologically rigorous. 3 Methodological Approaches Exemplary Question None, as students choose from courses across campus. None specified. Empirical Political Science Gain a comprehensive understanding of human rights and humanitarianism through the leading interdisciplinary human rights program in the United States. The curriculum links human rights to development, health, security, humanitarian assistance and more, and enables you to focus on the area of your specific interests. disadvantage, including gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and nationality. One hallmark of the program is a required internship that may be completed domestically or internationally. Interns typically work alongside other advocates for social justice to assist people, such as refugees, migrants, workers, and survivors of violence or human trafficking. Critical theoretical approaches. This program is based on an innovative learner-centered curriculum that emphasizes problembased and communityembedded seminars, as well as professional internships. Three distinct features of this program include: Innovative, Learner- Centered Curriculum: Students will benefit from an innovative Distance learning and short course options available Applied and Place- Based Our MA in Applied Human Rights is distinctive in five main ways: it is uniquely applied, exploring how human rights can advance social justice in law, policy and social activism it is interdisciplinary and holistic (integrating knowledge of human

Explore the issues of human dignity while critically examining the norms, processes and institutions designed to promote and protect human rights. The MA in International Human Rights offers the opportunity to customize your program to fit special research interests and professional goals curriculum focused on engaging the community and working with faculty on interdisciplinary research. Our curriculum not only brings university expertise to real-world community problems, but it also creates engaged interdisciplinary research teams of faculty and graduate students united by a common concern. Problem-Based and Action Research Seminars: An integral part of our curriculum is interdisciplinary seminars that examine current problems in social justice from several different theoretical and analytical viewpoints. For example, problembased seminars devote the entire seminar to pressing social justice and human rights issues rights, development, conflict, and more) students will acquire relevant knowledge but also skills that are vital for a career in human rights e.g. project management skills the lecturers are both academics and experienced practitioners, and the international human rights defenders hosted by the Centre will attend and lead classes an international field trip to South Africa takes place in the first term (student numbers permitting), enabling students to work alongside local NGOs and human rights defenders on concrete projects. Fundamental questions The MA addresses a paradox. Human rights is currently subject to critique on familiar

locally and transnationally. These courses are taught by faculty who address the issue from their area of expertise (social movements, international law, activism, etc.). Action research seminars engage students in community-embedded research supportive of local agencies dealing with pressing issues during the semester. For example, in an action research seminar on immigrant rights, students could work with the International Rescue Committee, the Florence Project for Immigration and Refugee Rights, Foster Angels of Arizona, Foster Care Review Board, and/or CPS. Such communityembedded research brings much-needed applied knowledge to the seminar classroom territory, such as civil liberties in the post 9/11 era, and is expanding rapidly into new areas. This context provides exciting new opportunities and fundamental challenges. There is a need to adjust our understanding of human rights, and human rights defenders, accordingly.

and also provides a benefit to the community. Grant Writing and Development for Social Justice: Due to the present indispensability of these skills for both researchers and those employed in NGOs, all students in this program are required to successfully complete a course in grant writing and development, usually in their second year. Experts in grant writing, such as program officers from national funding agencies and major private donors, join us as guest lecturers to provide invaluable practical instruction. By taking this course in their second year, students prepare with the requisite research and/or management skills to write successful proposals.

Sample Course(s) or attach detailed curricula, as above Core Courses 9 credits All students enroll in Introduction to Human Rights in their first fall semester of study. The other two core courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters. Introduction to Human Rights This course provides a wide-ranging survey of conceptual foundations and issues in contemporary human rights. The course examines the philosophical origins of human rights, their explication in the evolving series of international documents, questions of enforcement, and current debates. It also explores topics such as women's rights, development and human rights, the use of torture, humanitarian intervention, and the horrors of genocide. The broad range of subjects covered in the course is intended to assist students in honing their interests and making future course selections in the human rights field. International Human Rights Law This course introduces the fundamental concepts and problems of public international law. What are the origins of international law? Is international law really law? Who is International Studies Core: Choose from a set of dynamic courses that provide a broad understanding of international politics and economy. Course options are: Comparative Politics in the 21 st Century, International Political Economy, or International Politics Or a Political Theory course with permission of the Degree Director 2. Program Training Core: Select four training courses that provide you the knowledge necessary to succeed in your desired human rights career. Training course options are: Introduction to Human Rights (required) International Law and Human Rights (required) Human Rights and Foreign Policy Human Rights and International Organizations Discrimination, Minorities, and Rights of Indigenous Peoples Core Courses (9 Credit Hours) JHR 501: Proseminar in Social Justice & Human Rights JHR 506: Grant Writing for Social Justice & Human Rights JHR 510: Problem- Based Seminar JHR 525: Action Research in Social Justice & Human Rights JHR 584: Internship Career Oriented Track (9 Credit Hours) Social Justice & Human Rights Research JHR 500: Research Methods is required for students in the SJHR Research Track Social Justice & Human Rights Advocacy The MA structure has two components: compulsory modules, and optional modules. In total, students need to complete five modules (two compulsory, in the first term; one compulsory, running over two terms; two options in the second term). A dissertation will fulfill the requirements for an MA. This structure has been chosen so as to maximize the choice available to students, but to guide the selection process in a constructive way eg: indicating where modules are practicebased and where they are not. Continuous assessment of applied skills is a feature of the programme. Compulsory modules The three compulsory modules are:

governed by it? How are treaties interpreted? What is the relationship between international law and domestic law? We examine the interplay between law and international politics, in particular with reference to international human rights, humanitarian law, the use of force, and international criminal prosecutions. No prior knowledge of international law is required. While the topics are necessarily law-related, the course will assume no prior exposure to legal studies. Human Rights Research Seminar This course prepares students to engage in human rights. The course aims to give students a common, basic foundation in the main research methods and approaches relevant to human rights, with additional attention paid to research design and selected primary source material. The knowledge and skills developed in this course will help prepare students for the M.A. thesis research and will also be useful to those wishing to engage in further graduate study or research-oriented jobs. The course introduces students to multiple tools and approaches, but students will be able to tailor their work in the course 'Defending human rights'; 'Social sciences and human rights practice'; and 'International human rights law and advocacy'. The compulsory modules reflect the two sides to activism - the strategies employed and the debates, institutions and political structures activism seeks to influence - and will engage with all facets of the paradox outlined above. Defending human rights (40 credits; terms 1-2) Social sciences and human rights practice (20 credits; term 1) International human rights law and advocacy (20 credits, term 1) Dissertation (60 credits, terms 3-4)

to the needs of their intended thesis research to the extent possible. Concentration Courses 12 credits The concentration is self-defined by the student in consultation with the program. Concentration courses provide students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge in a particular area of human rights; expose them to key texts, discussions, questions, and debates that are relevant to their human rights research interests; and facilitate the identification of the specific research question that they will address in their thesis. The range of student concentrations and research interests is reflected in the diversity of theses completed by graduate students. To obtain a copy of the HRSMA thesis titles, please humanrightsma@columbia.edu. While some students enter the program with a specific research question in mind, others begin their first semester with a more general concentration and refine their research interests as they engage with key issues and debates through their coursework, extracurricular activities, and discussions with professors, fellow students, and practitioners. However, students who enroll full- Optional modules In the second term students will be able to take two options. Those offered by CAHR will share the characteristics of the MA (practice based and interdisciplinary) and will explore areas where rights are being used in new and innovative ways. Students may also select from optional modules listed below taught by other departments. Optional modules taught at CAHR Asylum, migration and trafficking Culture and protest Development Alternatives: Development, Rights, Security Truth, justice and reparations after violence Optional modules taught in other departments
