2 Twelve Bridges opened in 2006, previously Glen Edwards was sole middle school in District Twelve Bridges Middle School entering 8 th year of operation With new availability of space for a number of years, and to balance enrollment between the two middle schools, Carlin C. Coppin s middle school boundary was changed to Twelve Bridges Middle School District was aware that at some point Carlin C Coppin students would need to return to home school of Glen Edwards History of New Boundaries

3 In 2006: TBMS had 480 students GEMS had 630 students As of 4/23/13: TBMS has 872 students GEMS has 679 students Enrollment History

4 Currently showing 53 CCC 5 th Graders that are assigned to Twelve Bridges Middle School. In the school year of we are anticipating 68 5 th grade students, without adding in projected growth Historically about half of the CCC 5 th grade classes opt to attend GEMS on intradistrict transfers The boundary adjustment in school year would give GEMS approximately 135 additional students over the following three school years. 6 Numerous new housing developments are planned in the Carlin C. Coppin attendance area. New homes always equals new students. Lincoln Highlands Currently in construction, total of 196 homes Cypress Meadows Approved, no builder, total of 84 homes Meadowlands Approved, no builder, total of 313 homes Village 1 In process of City of Lincoln annexation, total of 5,639 dwelling units approved possible new schools in the development, but some overflow will attend CCC Projected Growth

8 Q: What is the plan to improve/update GEMS? A: This plan is available on the District website under Facilities and Glen Edwards Master Plan. Q: What technology is available at GEMS? A: GEMS has not only all the available computers in classrooms, drop in labs and technology labs, but additionally offers; technology elective and broadcasting. Both TBMS and GEMS offer robotics clubs. Q:What is the capacity of each middle school? A: GEMS, 1100 and TBMS, 896 Questions/Concerns

9 Q: Can each middle school accommodate portables for growth? A: No, only GEMS has that ability. Q: What is the plan for CCC enrollees at TBMS when the boundaries change? A: This will be what we work on as options for Board consideration. Q: What about those students younger siblings? A: This will be what we work on as options for Board consideration. Questions/Concerns

10 Q: After the boundary change will transportation be provided to GEMS? A: No. We will adhere to the current District policy on transportation. Q: Will the current transportation to TBMS for CCC students continue? A: This will be what we work on as options for Board consideration. Q: Can parents District staff input into this process and/or decision? A: Absolutely! Questions/Concerns

11 Q: What are the test scores at each middle school? A: The test scores for this last year have not been released yet. Q: What about proximity to TBMS? Newcastle area residents may be closer to TBMS than GEMS? A: Staff conducted mileage and time surveys using Google Maps and our farthest student addresses at CCC in all directions. The outcome was even if only by a minute or two, GEMS was still closer Questions/Concerns

12 Q: What about proximity to GEMS? Why don t LCES students go to GEMS? A: Due to regulations regarding the Mello-Roos taxes, they are entitled to attend a school in which they have paid towards. Q: Can CCC student be split between TBMS and GEMS based on proximity rather than on feeder elementary? A: No. It is always best to keep students together as they matriculate into higher grades. In addition, the proximities are not an issue. Questions/Concerns

13 Q: Can parents still apply for an intradistrict transfer for their children next year? A: Yes. Q: Are there any Rocklin students attending TBMS and taking space from WPUSD students? A: Some. We currently have 13 students with Rocklin addresses attending TBMS. However, the District discontinued approving interdistrict requests for TBMS attendance as of the school year. Questions/Concerns

14 Q: Would putting more students at GEMS and crowding classes negatively affect test scores? A: Classes are, by contract and State laws, only allowed to be a certain size at all schools. Q: What is the plan to increase test scores at GEMS? A: *Defer to Mr. Brown Q: Is there a guarantee that this will actually happen or is it only a possibility? A: This is a necessary and previously voted on change, but how it is implemented is what we will be working on. Questions/Concerns

15 Q: When will a third middle school be built? A: Per the 2010 Facilities Master Plan and current movement with Village development the next 6-8 school will be in Village 5 when enrollment in that area dictates the need. Q: The railroad tracks used to be the boundary between schools. Why isn t that the case for the middle school? A: Attendance boundaries always do shift when new development occurs and depending on enrollment. In this case the railroad tracks are no longer the main divider between areas of attendance. Questions/Concerns

16 Q: When will there be a second high school in Lincoln? A: WPUSD currently has two high schools, LHS and PHS. However, the Twelve Bridges High School is our next planned high school site and will be constructed with enrollment necessitates it and there is funding available.
