9 Only a handful of colleges in the country give you the freedom to design your own academic program. At Grinnell, there are no general education requirements, which might typically account for at least one-third of your total coursework at most other liberal arts colleges. The only required course is the First-Year Tutorial, an interactive, topicsbased seminar course, limited to just 12 students. Each tutorial professor also serves as adviser to their tutorial students until they declare a major, offering guidance based on their personal knowledge of their academic interests, aptitudes, and needs. You will be challenged here, in the best of ways. Professors will expect thorough research, thoughtful analysis, and creative thinking. You ll be responsible for cocreating your curriculum with your adviser, and you ll find your voice in a self-governing residential community. You will be an active participant in small, discussion-oriented classes, labs, and student clubs; learning as much from your peers as from your professors in a 24/7 learning environment. INDIVIDUALLY-ADVISED CURRICULUM LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Experiential learning is the cornerstone of a Grinnell education. Our professors have had great success obtaining external funding for valuable academic programs and research. Plus, the endowment allows students to conduct their own research on topics of interest through the Mentored Advanced Projects (MAPs). Grinnell also offers a wide range of internship opportunities both during the academic year and in the summer with variable options for academic credit and funding. By making individual choices, students meet the challenges of a rigorous academic and rich out-of-classroom experience. Grinnell s unique system of Self-governance encourages students to become responsible, respectful, and accountable members of the campus, town, and global community. Students provide input and make changes in almost every area of college life and no student is assigned the duty of policing their peers. Our students sum it up best: Self-Gov is Love! SELF GOVERNANCE There are over 200 student-run organizations on campus, which include: International Student Organization, Student Endowment Investment Group, Freesound Musicians Organization, The Scarlet and Black (campus newspaper), Social Entrepreneurs of Grinnell, Dagohir Swordfighting Club, Model United Nations, Debating Union, Mock Trial, Ultimate Frisbee, Belly Dance Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Grinnell Independent Theatre, Muslim Student Association, Vegan Co-op, Water Polo, Social Justice Action Group, Real Men, Chalutzim, KDIC (student radio station), Latin American Dance Club, Capoeira, Swing Society STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Grinnell College sets the foundation for career choice. Resources abound to assist students in preparing for their future. Collaborative work with the faculty and the Career Development Office prepares students for their success and assists in career assessment, exploration, and decisionmaking. The Career Development Office works closely with its alumni to provide pre-professional development experiences for students, as well as internships and oncampus visits by professionals in a variety of fields and off-campus interviewing events. 16 Paula Jamaica From the day I came to Grinnell, I realized that Grinnell community is like a family with everyone there to support you and help you to develop along the way. From the Financial Aid Office to the Dining Hall, everyone is so friendly and show that they are here for you. It is this kind of environment that I found to be quite different from other higher education institutions. Christine Uganda Grinnell is the one place you can be you. There s no pressure at all to change who you are to fit into Grinnell and because we are all diverse, you ll feel at home. What s even more exciting is that you ll find people with similar interests who you click with right away. You re guaranteed to find a niche and develop yourself fully. The saying, Never judge a book by its cover, is one I came to fully understand at Grinnell. I ve had amazing and memorable conversations with people I never thought I would ever get to talk to because I thought we had totally different lifestyles. Whether it s at the line at the pasta bar or in the locker rooms after practice, you re sure to strike up a conversation and trust me, a week later, you ll still be talking.
