2 Background and Context The Education Authority (EA) wants every child to have an outstanding education. The EA was established under the Education Act (Northern Ireland) 2014 and became operational on 1 April It is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department of Education and the Department for the Economy. The EA is responsible for ensuring that high quality primary and secondary education services are available to meet the needs of children and young people, and for support for the provision of efficient and effective youth services. These services were previously delivered by five Education and Library Boards (ELBs). The organisation employs over 39,000 people across Northern Ireland in a wide variety of roles including teachers in controlled schools, school-based support staff and staff in administrative headquarters. The work we do impacts the lives of tens of thousands of children, young people and their families every day. The services we provide are essential in supporting, encouraging and facilitating learning within our communities to develop generations of young people who are equipped to succeed in life and work in the modern world. As a public sector organisation, we must continue to deliver these vital services in a challenging environment of increasing financial pressure and under intense public scrutiny. Future Challenges and Opportunities Recent focus has been on transition from the former ELBs to a single authority. Looking forward, this focus moves from transition to transformation. Emerging from the five ELBs our aim is to build a new organisation which is focused on meeting the needs of all our young people equally, removing barriers to learning and ensuring equality of access to excellent education services so that every child can develop to his or her full potential. Work is underway to develop a strategic plan for the period This will provide a framework for the authority s activities and will guide the organisation through its transformation journey. The EA in all its activities will endeavour to support the Programme for Government to improve educational outcomes; reduce educational inequality; improve the quality of education and the skills profile of the population. The EA also recognises the fundamental role it has in other NI Executive priorities such as the economy and the wider success of Northern Ireland. These are exciting and challenging times for EA as we continue the process of transformation and seek fundamentally to transform education administration for the benefit of future generations of children and young people.

3 Temporary Full-Time Teacher of Geography to Advanced Level (Required to cover Maternity Leave from 20 February 2019) Omagh Academy Disclosure of Criminal Background If you have applied for a post that involves regulated activity under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007, the Board will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. Please note that due to proposals set out in the Department of Education s Budget, you WILL be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate, which is currently 33. Further details in relation to legislative requirements can be accessed on or JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: Teacher of Geography to Advanced Level STATUS: Temporary Full-Time Required to cover Maternity Leave from 20 February 2019 LOCATION: RATE OF PAY: REPORTS TO: Omagh Academy Teachers Pay Scale (M1-UPS3) The Principal The Post The Board requires the teacher to carry out his/her professional duties in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment of a teacher as set out in the Teachers (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (NI) General Information The post is for a full-time temporary teacher of Geography to Advanced Level to cover a maternity leave. Salary will be paid commensurate with the successful candidate s qualifications and experience. Omagh Academy is a co-educational controlled Grammar School with a staff of 45 and an enrolment of 655 pupils in the age range, of whom 175 are in the Sixth Form. It operates a 9 period day and a 45 period week, and the person appointed will be expected to teach up to 40 periods per week. The timetable will consist of classes at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 including GCSE and A level. The successful candidate will be required to work in a team with the other members of the Geography Department.

4 Geography is a well-established and successful subject, offered at GCSE and Advanced Level (CCEA specifications). The Geography Department has a staff of four teachers with a suite of dedicated classrooms. The successful candidate will be required to teach Geography to Advanced level, and should have the ability to use ICT resources to support teaching and learning strategies in day-to-day classroom practice. All staff at Omagh Academy are expected to have developed the ICT competence to be able to deliver discrete ICT classes to Years 8 and 9, if required, and to be able to assess the use of ICT by pupils in their subject area. The School places major emphasis on the range and variety of its extra-curricular provision, and the person appointed will be required to make a significant contribution to this important aspect of school life. The main areas of extra-curricular provision include: 1. Team Games and Sport: rugby, hockey, cricket, soccer, tennis, badminton, netball, basketball, swimming, athletics and cross-country running; 2. Cultural Activities: choir, orchestra, band, senior and junior drama, Young Enterprise and European Studies; 3. Outdoor Activities: Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, hill walking, etc.; 4. Clubs and Societies: Debating, Public Speaking, History and Politics, I.T., Cookery, technology, etc. Further details concerning extra-curricular activities and the arrangements within the Geography Department are available on the School s website: The person appointed will be expected to undertake the duties of a form teacher and other duties as defined in the Teachers Terms and Conditions of Employment Order (1997) Northern Ireland. A more detailed job description and person specification follow. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES Specific to this post the normal duties and responsibilities will be:- 1. Teaching and Assessment To teach Geography to K.S.3, GCSE and A Level. To contribute to the teaching of other subjects within his or her professional competence, including participation in remedial support programmes. To assess pupil progress and attainment as required by the school s Policy on Learning, Teaching and Assessment To contribute to the school s pastoral system by being a Form Tutor and teacher of Personal Development/LLW as required, and to undertake other duties as defined in the Teachers Terms and conditions of Employment Order [1987] Extra Curricular To make a significant contribution to at least one extra curricular activity. Supervisory Duties To participate as required in the supervision rota for pupils in the morning, at mid-morning break and after school. Staff Development To participate fully in relevant programmes of staff development.

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION ATTAINMENTS Applicants must be qualified teachers as recognised by the Department of (Education) Education and hold a degree or equivalent qualification in Geography or a degree or equivalent qualification in which there is a substantive component of Geography relevant to the curriculum at Key Stages 3,4 &5. ATTAINMENTS (Experience) ATTAINMENTS (Knowledge) SKILLS PERSONAL QUALITIES ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Experience of teaching Geography; Experience related to at least one extra-curricular activity. Teaching, learning and assessment strategies in Geography; The Northern Ireland geography curriculum; Knowledge of the GCSE and A-Level syllabi (CCEA specifications); Use of ICT, especially software specific to geography; Current educational developments, particularly in geography. Communication skills oral and written; Interpersonal & Motivational skills; Classroom Management & Variety of teaching styles; Use of ICT for Teaching and Learning. Educational Values; Enthusiasm, dynamism and a passion for the subject; Presence, tact & sense of commitment; Appreciation of importance of Learning and Teaching; Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Tact & Sensitivity; Common sense & initiative; Genuine care for the needs of students as individuals A commitment to extra-curricular provision, together with the ability to make a significant contribution to at least one extra-curricular activity. Short-listing Criteria: Essential By the date of appointment applicants must: 1. Be qualified teachers as recognised by the Department of Education; 2. Hold a degree in Geography or an equivalent qualification in which there is a substantive component of Geography relevant to the curriculum at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5; 3. Have experience of teaching Geography at post-primary level (teaching practice accepted). Desirable 4. Have experience of teaching Geography to A level. 5. Preference may be given to those applicants who can demonstrate by qualification/experience the ability and willingness to make a significant contribution to the School s extra-curricular provision.
