4 4 TYPE TITLE HERE PARTNERSHIPS MoU with International Potato Center In a joint agreement with International potato Center (CIP), the collaboration will among others things, promote joint research activities publications, source for research funding and provide internships and job opportunities for students. In addition, the cooperation agreement will see the two institutions conduct breeding work and potato trials at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) fields and engage staff and students in building research through exchange programmes and short courses. USAID partners with UoN in launching Geographic Information Systems Lab The University of Nairobi, through College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), partnered with United States Agency International Development (USAID) in launching Geographic Information (GIS) Lab. This event took place at the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) and had Mr. Isiah Parnell, Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, as the chief guest and Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, as his host. Mr. Isiah Parnell hailed the project which was one of the many projects undertaken by Center for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES). He noted that education is one of the most powerful tools for shaping the future of any nation. Further, he acknowledged the fact that the partnership has helped produce well-trained teachers who share their knowledge of drylands management with a new generation of Kenyan scientists and researchers, many of whom come from the pastoralists communities that are most affected by climate change. The Vice Chancellor commended the strong partnership exhibited between University of Nairobi and Colorado State University (CSU) in implementing the three years project and reiterated the commitment of UoN in supporting the vision and mission of the Centre. He recognized the establishment of the GIS Lab at the University as one that presented a significant step in the use of new technologies to build capacity of students and faculty in addressing emerging issues and challenges facing the Country and Africa as a whole especially in drylands. On her speech, Prof. Mwang ombe, the Principal CAVS, reaffirmed the College s committed to poverty reduction and sustainable livelihoods in Kenya and the region through adoption of new technologies in training and research programmes. CSDES was established at the University of Nairobi in 2011 as a partnership project between UoN and Colorado State University (CSU) that was funded by USAID-HED initiative. It was set up as a hub of collaborative institutions engaged in education, research and action supporting dryland communities so that they can adapt to the many changes affecting their sustainability.
5 Entrepreneurship Launch of S.E.E CAVS launched an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Club Program whose operations will be facilitated by Solve the Equation East -Africa (SEE). Solve the Equation East- Africa (SEE) is a collaborative network between four Universities, located within East- Africa (Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) based on a continuum of the existing Dutch funded - SPARK UP project and the USAIDfunded OHCEA project. The collaborating 5 Universities include Umutara Polytechnic (Lead Institution), Rwanda, Makerere University, Uganda, University of Nairobi, Kenya and Muhimbiri University, Tanzania. Solve the Equation East-Africa (SEE) coordinator, Dr. Andrew G. Thaiyah (left), Principal, Prof. Agnes Mwangombe (second left) and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. John Kimenju (second right), together with other lecturers during the launch of the program at Lecture hall. Nature of the Program The program is a collaborative program with Tufts University (USA) and is funded by MasterCard foundation through the Taillores Network of Universities. During the launch, the College Principal, Prof. Mwang ombe, acknowledged the project an instrumental activity geared towards achieving financial growth in the agriculture sector in Kenya. The primary goal of this prestigious program is to increase graduate employment in East Africa through innovative educational solutions. The program will further support the piloting and mentoring of successful business ideas up to their full commercialization. Also, Institute-industry relationships will be established and sustained through various platforms such as open days, interactive web interfacing, quarterly bulletins and face to face visits. Objectives of Solve Equation East Africa Some of the objectives of the program include; identifying technical skills required in meeting socioeconomic trends in the East African Community, equipping graduates with these technical skills and establishing a sustainable network between tertiary educational institutions, government and industry through strong linkages built on regular stakeholder platforms and attachments. SEE coordinator, Dr. Andrew G. Thaiyah, identified strategies set to meet these goals and objectives. Some of which involve; establishment of a baseline assessment of skills needs, review final year curriculum to include entrepreneurship and developing in-service short courses while simultaneously identifying the human and infrastructural resources required to transfer these skills. The synergy between institutions will help bridge human resource gaps of individual institutions and allow regional uniformity, he said.
6 6 TYPE TITLE HERE for your Information Lang ata Junior School visited Dairy farm Langa ta Junior School children outside the College Dairy Farm. CAVS encourages such visits since they create awareness on food and nutrition security to children at a young age. It is the leading college in making such initiatives. Lang ata Junior School paid a visit to CAVS Dairy Farm. Having a vision of becoming a model teaching farm, the children got to learn a lot about animal protection, husbandry, food and nutritional security and environment conservation. In doing this, the Department of Vet Farm proves once more that it is a self sustaining and profitable teaching farm that acts as a model for demonstration of good farming practices to the general public. In Peru, our Environmentalist s heritage still lives on Ever wondered why CAVS will always be a leader in Environmental conservation? It is because, being a focal point of agricultural entrepreneurship and research, the footprints of legends it gave birth to are still fresh. Apart from that, it is home to the World s greatest environmentalist- the late Prof. Wangari Muta Maathai (1 st April, th September, 2011). She was the first woman to obtain a PhD (from the University of Nairobi, in 1971) in East and Central Africa; making her the first feminine professor in the region in She was also the first lady chair of the Veterinary Anatomy Department at the University of Nairobi. In 1986, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award. Later on, in 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for Her contribution to Sustainable Development, Democracy and Peace. Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace & Environmental Studies (WMI), at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, was named after her. Courtesy of her vast achievements as an environmentalist, the Municipality of San Borja District organized a tree planting ceremony that marked the birth of Wangari Maathai Park in the city of Lima, Peru, in 2014.
7 CSR 7 Tree planting for a cleaner, greener environment This is in line with the College s core values of Respect for and conservation of the CAVS successfully participated in tree planting event that was held at UNIBIO Park. The event takes place twice a year (in each rainy season) and is in line with the College s core values of Respect for and conservation of the environment, and also with the National Reform Policy in Forestry which requires active participation by all stakeholders in order to ensure the attainment of 10% forest cover in Kenya. Little wonder the College clinched silver trophy after emerging third at the Total Eco challenge According to UN FAO, 6.1% or approximately 3,467,000ha of Kenya is forested. Less than 2.175ha of the estimated size comprise indigenous forests. This is less than the recommended 10-30%. environment, and also with the National Reform Policy in Forestry which requires active participation by all stakeholders in order to ensure the attainment of 10% forest cover in Kenya. Nationwide leader in Tree Planting Loss of tree cover has impacted negatively on our climate and led to extended periods of drought, leading to major disruption of the agricultural sector and animal production. Food security has become a recurring threat particularly to the livelihoods of people in the rural communities including negative impacts on their socio economic status. This has raised poverty levels leading to increased rural -urban migration and other subsequent challenges. Being a nationwide leader in tree planting, CAVS encourages and continues to participate in tree planting activities and forest conservation; with the ultimate goal of surpassing the required forest cover in Kenya. This will ultimately lead to a greener and cleaner environment.
