2 The RedhillAcademy New Opportunities Specialising in the Performing Arts and Science Welcome to The Redhill Academy Post-16 prospectus. We believe that every student deserves the very best education possible and our Post-16 provision will build on the excellent foundations already achieved at GCSE. The Redhill Academy was inspected by Ofsted earlier this year. We are extremely pleased and proud to have been awarded outstanding for the second time in a row. We pride ourselves on our warm and friendly atmosphere which, I believe, is a reflection of the excellent relationships that exist between students and staff here. Our specialisms in Performing Arts and Science are just two of the many areas in which we excel. We offer a broad and balanced range of exciting courses which are designed to challenge and stimulate learning for all students, from academic A Levels to vocational Level 2 and 3 courses. Our Post-16 Centre has been designed to enable students to benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, and coupled with the Learning Resource Centre, allows students to harness 21st century technology to support their learning. We are proud of our students academic and personal successes, and aim to support and encourage all students as they strive to achieve the very best they can and to progress to university, further training or employment. As the most senior of The Redhill Academy s students, you will be leaders displaying principles of care, tolerance, respect, discipline and hard work. You will be responsible for your own learning with the support of your tutor and subject teachers. 3 A welcome from the Director of Post-16 We are extremely proud of our Sixth Form. We have high academic standards, excellent teaching and very high expectations of all our students. In 2013, our average point score was our highest ever with 60% of A level grades at A*- B. As a result 80% of Year 13 applied to university with a 100% success rate. Post-16 Prospectus The Sixth Form team consists of a Director of Post 16, a Head of Sixth Form, Deputy Head of Sixth Form and a Sixth Form Administrator. Our job is to ensure that you leave Redhill reaching your full potential. You will also receive outstanding teaching and guidance, which will include your own dedicated Sixth Form Tutor. You will be closely monitored and supported to enable you to not only achieve excellent results, but to also grow into a person who will successfully take their place in society. The Redhill Academy Sixth Form is also driven by a desire to see students aim high in life and, as such, actively encourages students to apply to university or advanced apprenticeship. We encourage all our Sixth Form students to become involved in the wider life of the school. We offer opportunities for students to become Senior Leaders, as well as mentors, fundraisers and Subject Ambassadors, all of which helps to produce well-rounded individuals ready to take on the world. These roles have given us the chance to organise a variety of charity events and promoting the academy ethos in the community. Students at the Sixth Form are treated as individuals and as a result of the extra support given, students have the confidence and resources to achieve their goals. We have gained so much from attending Redhill Sixth Form, not only academically but also socially, and hope you will choose to have the same opportunity and privileges we have had. 4 Facilities Post-16 students at Redhill are housed in a separate building specially designed for Post-16 study, with dedicated airy, modern teaching spaces, modern technology to support teaching and learning, private study areas and a Post-16 social area, kitchen and meeting space. This resource is further enhanced by the newly developed Learning Resource Centre, with computer and printing facilities, research opportunities, career journals and higher education information. Post-16 students are avid users of the Learning Resource Centre and make the most of its opportunities to develop the skills of independent learning. Post-16 students also have access to the main school buildings and excellent facilities, including Dance and Drama studios, Music rooms, newly refurbished Science laboratories and specialist ICT suites. Much of the sixth form teaching seen here during the inspection was outstanding. Consequently, sixth formers are making excellent progress Support for Studies The Post-16 Centre has a culture of independence, learning and success, and provides a wide range of opportunities for students to flourish as individuals. Every student will be supported and encouraged to aim high, enjoy new experiences and achieve their full potential. Our student support system for Post-16 study is led by an experienced Director of Post-16 Education, who will ensure that students receive one-to-one advice and support throughout their time in Post-16 study. We aim to help all students to adjust to the new working methods of Post-16 study in a caring environment underpinned by a culture of hard work and commitment. We will develop strong partnerships with all of our students, ensuring that we give regular careers guidance, financial advice and specific UCAS application guidance and support, working together to monitor progress and achieve excellence. 6 Beyond the classroom Redhill offers a wide-ranging Post-16 Enrichment Programme. You will have the chance to further develop skills that will ensure you leave Redhill as an active citizen. There will be opportunities for you to choose from a range of extra qualifications and activities such as: AS/A2 General Studies AS Critical Thinking Extended Project Qualification Young Enterprise Duke of Edinburgh Award Community Sports Leadership Award Student cooking Supporting younger students Playing for school sports teams Taking part in Performing Arts activities Spanish for Business courses Becoming Senior Students and taking on leadership roles within the school Italian for Business courses Multimedia Group I am still learning Michelangelo

7 The Post-16 Curriculum We offer a diverse range of learning experiences, designed to equip our students with the qualifications, skills and confidence to progress successfully to university, further training or employment. Students are encouraged to work hard and become actively involved in Post-16 life. Post-16 Prospectus There are three main pathways for students to follow Post-16. Pathway A: Designed for students who achieve at least 5 A*- C grades at GCSE level. You should choose up to four AS Levels in Year 12, with the additional possibility of AS Critical Thinking, AS General Studies, AS Further Maths or the Extended Project Qualification. In Year 13 you should continue all or most of these courses to A2 Level. The most likely destination for Pathway A students is university entrance, followed by professional employment. Pathway B: Designed for students who achieve a mixture of mainly C and D grades at GCSE level. You will require 5 A*- C grades at GCSE level (including equivalents) You should consider a Level 3 vocational course with possibly an AS course in Year 12. Options need to be carefully discussed with staff. Some Pathway B students will enter employment or other further education courses. Pathway C: Designed for students who achieve a mixture of D and E grades at GCSE level. You should consider a Level 2/3 vocational course. We offer Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Engineering at our partner school, The Carlton Academy. Successful students can progress onto Level 3 courses, enter employment or progress to an apprenticeship. There is no limit to the opportunities offered at Redhill. 8 Courses available Level 3 A Level courses A Levels are divided into AS and A2 courses. For most, it means students will study AS in Year 12, then go on to study A2 in Year 13, leading to full A Levels by the end of Year 13. Courses available at AS and A2 Level: Applied ICT Art Biology Chemistry Dance Drama and Theatre Studies Business Studies English Language English Literature French Further Mathematics Geography German Government and Politics History Mathematics Media Studies Music Performance Studies Photography Physics Product Design Psychology Philosophy and Ethics Sport and Physical Education Sociology Use of Maths Level 2/3 vocational courses Level 2/3 vocational courses are equal to between two and four GCSEs, dependent upon whether the students follow the Certificate or the Diploma pathway. Level 3 courses are equal to one A Level, with the exception of Level 3 Sport, which is equivalent to two. Students will probably also take resits in English and Maths as necessary. Courses available: BTEC Forensic Science (Level 3) Health and Social Care (Level 3) Sport (Level 3) Motor Vehicle Maintenance (Level 2/3) Engineering (Level 2/3) BTEC ICT (Level 3) BTEC Hospitality (Level 3)

9 Post-16 Prospectus GCSE resits Resit courses are offered in: GCSE English GCSE Mathematics All students who do not achieve at least a grade C in either of these subjects at the end of Year 11, will be required to retake these in Year 12.
