1 Japan-Latin America Student Mobility Program : Human Dignity and Harmonization in Migration and Coexistence (Sophia-Nanzan Latin America Program) Supported by the Japanese Government s Re-Inventing Japan Project Sophia-Nanzan LAP Program is an exchange study-abroad opportunity for undergraduate/graduate students provided by a joint initiative of Sophia University, Nanzan University and Sophia University Junior College Division, with support by the Japanese government. Under the theme of Migration and Co-existence, the program aims at educating and developing human resources with expertise in their field of study, ability to view problems from multilateral perspectives, and readiness to cooperate in finding solutions. Multi-layered educational and research activities provide opportunities not only for acquisition of knowledge of the language and culture of the host country, but also for internships, service learning, field trips, and educational practices for the society of people of Japanese descent. Program Outline Latin American students will be offered a multi-campus education in Japan. The basic model course includes (1) taking an intensive Japanese language course and internship programs at Nanzan *(Nagoya) and (2) enrolling in Undergraduate or Graduate Program appropriate to their field of study to take course work at Sophia (Tokyo). Students will then participate in joint programs offered for both inbound and outbound students; Seminar on Comparative Study of Japan and Latin-America held in Spanish or Portuguese to be attended by both students of Latin-America and Japan; active learning course Migration and Coexistence in which issues will be presented by researchers of industry, government and academia from diverse perspectives; service learning programs and internships at companies and schools. *Intensive Japanese language course at Nanzan: The selection might be conducted in case of receiving applications that exceed the receiving capacity. Required Course and Activity(*required to take one course at least) All LAP program students are required to take at least one required course and one internship program, in addition to academic courses in the host faculty/graduate school. Seminar on Comparative Study of Japan and Latin-America (2 credits) The course is designated to encourage Latin-American and Japanese students to understand Japan and Latin-America through comparison between two countries/regions from different perspectives such as economics, culture, society, etc. The course is conducted in Spanish or Portuguese. Migration and Coexistence (2 credits) The course is designed to expose students to major global issues and concerns in the global trends in migration, economy, environment and human coexistence. Active learning methods will be promoted and various didactic methods will be used to activate communication and learning. This is not meant to provide in-depth analysis but rather to give students an ability to view the issues from different angles. Internship program at a Japanese company/organization (no credit) Internship opportunities will be provided at a Japanese company/organization in the Tokyo or Nagoya area, specially arranged for LAP program students. LAP program covers (1) Accommodation fee for Sophia Soshigaya International House in Tokyo for 1 semester during the exchange period at Sophia University (2)Accommodation fee during the Intensive Japanese course at Nanzan University in Nagoya, (3)One way train ticket from Nagoya(Nanzan) to Tokyo Station. Apart from LAP program, one student per university has a chance to receive a JASSO(Japan Student Services Organization) scholarship (80,000JPY/month) as his/her living cost in Japan. However, JASSO scholarship is not guaranteed yet, since the student must be approved by JASSO. Application Process To apply for the Sophia-Nanzan LAP Program, please contact the office in charge of exchange programs (the International Office, in most case) at your home university. The exchange program coordinator at your university will have more details about the application procedure. Once the application documents are submitted, the home university selects the students to nominate for Sophia University, which in turn will review the applications of its selected students. 3 Intensive Elementary Japanese Program at Nanzan University The Center for Japanese Studies at Nanzan University, renowned as a leader in the field of Japanese language education, now offers an intensive three-week Elementary Japanese program in March, Curriculum Intensive Elementary Japanese (IEJ) I (45 min. 20 times/week 3 weeks) Prerequisites: Designed for students who have not had any formal Japanese instruction and/or students had have less than 100 hours of Japanese instruction. Content: The course consists of four types of classes, (10 times/week), Japanese Reading and Writing (6 times/week), Conversation with Japanese students (2 times/week), and Internship (2 times/week). Goals: Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to cope with basic daily and specific matters in various situations in Japan, such as greetings, self-introductions, going to school, going shopping, meeting people, visiting various places in Nagoya and Tokyo, participating in an internship, etc. Students are expected to read and write short passages (eg. s) using the grammar and expressions covered in these classes, as well as to carry out a conversation. Students should become able to read and write 50 kanji (Chinese characters) in addition to hiragana and katakana (syllabic Japanese scripts). Internship Program: Students are expected to participate in the Internship Program. There will be an orientation session to help students make the most of their internship experience. 2. Field Trips: There are some field trips with Japanese students during the program. There will also be an orientation session for field trips. 3. Interaction with Japanese Students: There will be plenty of opportunities for participants to interact with Japanese students. For example, Japanese students who major in Spanish and Latin American studies will help you in Japanese language classes, you can improve your Japanese in the Japan Plaza, where only Japanese may be used, and you can go on field trips with Japanese students. 4 LAP Application Materials Guideline Please read the following instructions for each item carefully before submitting the application documents to us. General rules for submitting applications: 1) Application form and other prescribed forms are available only at the office in charge of exchange programs in our partner institutions. Applicants are required to submit their applications through the exchange program coordinator of their home institution. 2) Applicants should submit original documents ONLY. If original certificate (of language aptitude proof etc.) is unavailable, please submit a copy of the documents certified by home institution. 3) Documents printed in a language other than English or Japanese have to be translated into English or Japanese and certified by the home institution. 4) Application documents will not be returned. If an applicant withdraws from the exchange program, the application documents will be kept at Sophia for one year. 5) When filling out the documents, please TYPE. It must be typed. It requires more than 500 words.) Color photocopies and computer printouts are NOT acceptable. Please write your name on the back of the photo. Attach one photo on the Application Form for Exchange Program and another photo on the Housing Application form. Enclose two photos. (They are for Application for Certificate of Eligibility and the student ID card.)

5 (2) Application Form (Form Provided) The applicant must specify the semester and the program for which he/she is applying. The applicant should refer to the course information on the website when filling out the list of courses he/she intends to take at Sophia. Course Information : It is strongly recommended to take Japanese language course every semester. (The formal course registration will be made by the students after arriving in Japan.) (3) Two Letters of Recommendation (Form Provided) Letters must be signed and completed by professors / lecturers who have taught the applicant an academic course at his/her home institution. Please make sure the signature is handwritten. (4) Academic Purpose Essay Generally, the essay should be about the applicant's reasons for wishing to study at Sophia, precise areas of intended study and how the study in Sophia relates to the applicant s previous experience as well as future goals. Note: Applicants to the Graduate Program in Global Studies should list all courses they wish to take, indicating for each the relevance to their degree of study in their home institution and their background for the course. This explanation is separate from the word count for the Academic Purpose Essay For English-taught programs applicants, please write more than 500 words in English. For Japanese-taught programs applicants, please write 800 to 1200 characters in Japanese. (5) Certificate of Health (Form Provided) All applicants should submit the Certificate of Health completed within 6 months, signed by a practicing physician and indicating that the applicant is physically fit to study abroad and do the required academic work. All items on the certificate must be filled out. Chest X-ray test is mandatory. Please indicate date of X-ray examination. Note: applicants with special needs should consult the Center for Global Discovery in advance. (6) Photocopy of Passport (and visa, if not coming on student visa) Submit a photocopy of applicant s passport personal information page. Renew passport if it will expire during the exchange period in Sophia. If the applicant is not coming on a student visa, please submit a copy of relevant visa to enter and study in Japan.

6 (7) Housing Application Form (Form Provided) ALL applicants must submit the housing application regardless of whether they wish to make accommodation arrangements through Sophia or not. If applicants wish to make the accommodation arrangement through Sophia, they must fill out all pages and sign the promise. (8) Official Academic Transcript(s) UNDERGRADUATE programs applicants: Provide latest official transcript(s) of all undergraduate level institutions attended. GRADUATE programs applicants: Provide bachelor diploma copy with latest official transcript(s) of all previous undergraduate and graduate studies. Transcripts must be ORIGINAL documents issued by the home institution. Student copies are NOT acceptable. Applicants must have completed at least one semester at their home institutions by the time of applying. Applicants for spring entrance program: submit transcript including grades of previous spring semester. Applicants for autumn entrance program: submit transcript including grades of previous autumn semester. Notes: a. Applicants are expected to have a Grade Point Average of B (3.0) or higher in the standard 4-level rating system (A, B, C, D). Those who do not fulfill the requirement will be rejected. For more information, see following website. Qualifications: b. A list of courses that you are taking at the time of application should be shown on the transcript(s). If not, please submit a separate list of courses in progress. c. Explanations of the grading system used at the applicant s home university should be attached to the transcript(s) by the applicant s home institution. (9) English Aptitude Proof REQUIRED for applicants from non-english-speaking institutions applying to Sophia s English taught program. Minimum score for each test are as following: 79 on TOEFL ibt / 550 on TOEFL ITP / 6.0 on IELTS(Academic) / 730 on TOEIC Non-native English speakers who apply for the Graduate Program in Global Studies are expected to have a higher English ability. Applicants who cannot fulfill the following minimum language requirement will be denied the

7 entrance into the program. 100 on TOEFL ibt / 600 on TOEFL ITP / 7.0 on IELTS(Academic) / 870 on TOEIC (10) Japanese course application (for applicants to Intensive Japanese Course at Nanzan University This document is necessary only if you wish to take Intensive Japanese Course at Nanzan University in Nagoya before the regular course in Sophia University in Tokyo. The course fee and accommodation during the stay in Nagoya is free of charge for LAP students. If you don t wish to take this Japanese course, you don t need to submit this document. For details and overseas testing of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, refer to: (11) JASSO application form *ONLY for applicants of JASSO scholarship This document is necessary only if you wish to apply for JASSO scholarship. (12) Application for Certificate of Eligibility (submit ONLINE only) Certificate of Eligibility is necessary for applicants who do not hold Japanese passport or other kinds of visa which covers the exchange period in Japan. Please ask home institution coordinator for the website URL in order to download the COE application form. All items should be filled out carefully before the online submission.

This scholarship is for qualified international students to help them with their study and research expenses in Japan. Some qualified students from LAP partner universities will be given the stipend as described below. Please read the following information carefully and nominate your students who are confirmed to fulfill all of the qualifications, especially who are academically outstanding but do not have enough funds to study in Japan. * Basically each institution can nominate only ONE applicant to Sophia University for the JASSO scholarship for LAP. But in case you have two applicants for Spring 2018, you can nominate both students. Application deadline: by Tuesday, October 31 st, 2017(JST) Duration of scholarship: For one semester students:from the date when the exchange program begins up until July For full year students:from the date when the exchange program begins up until January Amount of scholarship (Tentative): 80,000 per month Required application document (form provided): The following required document should be submitted by both and postal mail to the Office of Global Education and Collaboration of Sophia University. **Please scan and send the application document by before sending it by postal mail. Qualifications (applicants must fulfill all of the following conditions): 1. Degree-seeking students who belong to one of the universities which has the valid exchange agreement with Sophia. 2. Students who hold the nationality of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. (International students who do NOT have a Japanese nationality. Students with dual citizenships of Japan are NOT eligible.) 3. Students who are academically outstanding, but do not have enough funds to study in Japan. 4. Students who will hold the status of residence College Student during their study in Japan. 5. Students who will return to their home countries after the completion of studying. If the students do not return, they may have to pay back all scholarship funds to the JASSO. 6. Students who have no other scholarship which covers more than 80,000 per month. If the students have some other scholarship, they should tell us its name and the monthly amounts. *Sophia will notify the university s coordinator of the selection result, but NOT directly notify the results to the applicant. Please inform the results to your applicant without failure. Application will not be accepted after the deadline for any reasons. Nominees will not be selected after the deadline. <Note to the application> 1. For one semester students, the last month of the JASSO scholarship is July So their expected date of completion/ graduation must be a month after July For full year students, the last month of the JASSO scholarship is January So their expected date of completion / graduation must be a month after January 2019.
