3 A Study on profiling of Youth Conducted at Tihar Central Jail # 7 INTRODUCTION Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan [DJJS], a renowned socio-spiritual cultural organisation has recently conducted a study of preparing Profiles of the Youth who are in the Tihar Central Jail # 7, New Delhi. The purpose of this study is to know the educational background, professional trainings undertaken, occupational interests etc of the youth. The sample size considered for this purpose is: 630. The results would help DJJS to provide more meaningful employable skills with enhanced training to the youth who are from different parts of India; so that the person can take up a job or self-employment once he is released from the prison. In turn, DJJS s efforts will help Jail authorities to maintain discipline and rehabilitate the youth and also to bring transformation among the vulnerable youth of the country. 4 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The information collected through personal interviews of 630 people, conducted during 7th to 18th February, 2011 in Jail No.7, Delhi Prisons, Tihar. FAMILY SIZE 54% of the respondents have family of 4-6 members; 25% have 7-9 members; 1 have 1-3 members and 1 have 10 or above family members. Ten and Above 1 One to Three 1 Seven to Nine 25% Four to Six 54% EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS There are 4 of youth who are illiterate; each are diploma holders and graduates. 68% of educated are who studied at madarsas graduation not completed Post graduate graduate others ( madarsas ) 4 diploma illiterate 25% primary 1 higher secondary 9% below primary secondary 1

5 PROFESSIONAL COURSES DONE About 7% of respondents have attended any technical course and 8% have acquired any vocational skill. Whopping 79% are not trained in any professional course Technical 7% Mechanical 4% Professional Artistic Vocational skill 8% None 79% INTEREST IN ANY PROFESSIONAL COURSE Given a chance, 2 wanted to undergo any mechanical related course and 1 in any vocational course that would help them in future. 39% are not interested in any course. 6 PREVIOUS OCCUPATION 37% of respondents were working in private sector; 3 were self-employed or in small business and 18% were unemployed. 9 CONCLUSION As per the above findings, the respondents have shown interest to pursue studies once they are out of the jail. Most of them have good mix of hobbies and interests which will help DJJS and Jail authorities to identify the correct training needs for each one of them. RECOMMENDATIONS Both DJJS and Jail authorities need to arrange the specific trainings as per the interests, educational coaching, encourage their hobbies and career areas with the ultimate goal of providing livelihood to each one. These findings also show that DJJS s goal of inner transformation through Brahm Gyan is working perfectly and there is more need to reach out to the persons who are undecided or not interested so that they won t go into depression or get influence of bad elements. Sustained efforts and training as per their interests will only give meaningful results in rehabilitation and provision of livelihood.
