5 TA vs. Counselor As an NHS student, you will have one teacher advisor (also known as TA) and one counselor who stay with you for all four years of high school. Your TA and counselor serve as a source of support for you and work together to help promote your overall success. Below, you will find the different roles and responsibilities between your TA and counselor. TA Interact with you 4 times a week Informational: Bulletin and school announcements Fall Conference: Get to know you and check in on your academic and social progress Spring Conference: Schedule your classes for the following year COUNSELOR 9 th grade: Freshmen presentations in the fall 10 th grade: Individual planning conferences with you and your parents 11 th grade: Junior Parent Night and Junior Group Conferences 12 th grade: Senior meetings, college presentations and application assistance All 4 years: Source of support for academic, college and career and personal/social concerns (see page 10 for more info on counseling services and availability) 4

13 CREATING AN ACCOUNT ON AERIES PARENT PORTAL Parent Portal is an online student information system that provides students and parents access to a student s academic information, such as classes, current grades, transcript, and attendance. We recommend that both student and parent access Parent Portal on a regular basis to keep track of the student s academic progress. STEP 1: Go to and click on the icon on the left hand side of the website. On the login page, click on Create New Account then select account type: either Parent or Student and click Next. STEP 2: Type in your address and enter in a password (make sure you remember the password for future login). Then click the Next button. 12

14 STEP 3: You will receive an similar to the one below from Take note of the Code at the bottom of the and then click on the "Confirm This Address link. STEP 4: You will be redirected to the Parent Portal website for Verification. Type in your address and the code found in the above then click Accept. Then click on Return to Login Page. STEP 5: On the login page, enter in your address, click Next then your password. On the Student Verification screen, enter in the following information then click Next : Student s Permanent ID Number: This is the 9 digit ID number on the student s class schedule Student s Home Telephone Number: The number we have for you in our system Verification Code: This is a 10 digit alpha numeric code (different from code in Step 3) that was ed to you by the district upon registration to IUSD. See your counselor if you re unable to retrieve this code. 13

15 STEP 6: Click on your name then hit the Next button. This will make sure that the address you supplied for the Parent Portal login is the same address that we have on file for you. STEP 7: Your Parent Portal account is now set up. If you need to add another student to your account, click on the Add Another Student to your Account button and follow the instructions. If you have any questions or issues, please see your counselor or for assistance. 14

17 Naviance is a web based service designed especially for students, counselors and parents. It is a comprehensive website that you can use to help make decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. Your Naviance portal also provides up to date information regarding college admission and data that is specific to our school. It also lets us share information with you about upcoming meetings, news, events and web resources for college and career information. Logging in to Naviance 1. Go to the and click on the Naviance logo on the left hand side. 2. On the log in page for Naviance enter your Northwood log in info (username and password are the same as your username and password for your Northwood account). 3. Go to the ABOUT ME tab. Under Official Things, click on Profile. You can double check information. PLEASE ADD YOUR ADDRESS. Click on the pencil and type it in twice to confirm. Here is a list of activities you can do on Naviance: Feature Description How to Access Career Interest profiler A career interest survey. Use the results to explore suggested occupations; examine the education, training, and skills required; as well as wages typical for these occupations. The information is also useful when exploring possible college majors. College Super Match Set search criteria to yield a list of colleges to explore. Save your search to access/modify. Click on the various tabs of individual college profiles to learn more about financial aid, majors and degrees, and campus life. 18 Feature Description How to Access Do What You Are Completion of the assessment will generate a report that will provide you with important information about your personal characteristics. You will learn about careers that are matched to you, your personal strengths and blindspots, how you negotiate in your daily life, and a host of other useful information. College Match Allows you to use historical GPA and test score info to match you with colleges that you may want to explore further (please remember that there are many factors that affect college admissions this is just a tool to help you look at other potential colleges to consider). Scholarship List College and local organizationsponsored scholarship opportunities. You can also browse by category to yield a search list relevant to your interests/special talents. Scattergrams Allows you to see GPA/test scores on a graph in comparison to other NHS students that applied and were accepted/denied/ waitlisted to the same school. College Compare This tool allows you to compare your GPA/test scores for up to 10 colleges to those of other NHS students who applied to the same colleges you are interested in. Your PSAT score will be converted to an SAT score for the purposes of College Compare. You will have data on those that applied and were accepted. 1. Click the About Me tab 2. 19 Google Apps for Education (GAFE) offers students a free suite of productivity tools (like Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.) specifically designed for school usage. Follow the directions below to sign into your GAFE account. STEP 1: Log into any NHS computer using your NHS username and password. STEP 2: Open up a browser and type in STEP 3: Click on the button on the top right of the website. Step 5 Step 3 Step 6 STEP 4: When prompted, enter your username (e.g., 21BrownCharlie@iusd.org) and password (same as your NHS username and password to log onto an NHS computer) STEP 5: Click on the icon on the top right of the page. STEP 6: A window with various tools will appear. Click on whichever tool you would like to use.
