2 SAMPLE VCE/VET PROGRAMS Sample programs can be found on the web version of the Year 7-12 Curriculum Handbook on the School website and on MyPenola. They contain samples of possible programs students can choose from and the areas of further studies or employment they could lead to. These are a guide only and students should discuss their selections further, with relevant staff. 3 SECTION G: PLANNING YOUR VCE PROGRAM Entry to Studies Pre-Requisites Students may enter studies at Unit 1, 2 or 3. In Year 11, students are encouraged to select a Unit 1 and 2 sequence. All Unit 3 and Unit 4 studies must be done as a sequence. However students need to keep in mind that some studies specifically advise that either one or both of Unit 1 and 2 be completed before attempting Unit 3 in that study, or have equivalent experience, or be willing to undertake some extra preparation for the new study. At Penola Catholic College, this advice applies to the following studies: Italian Japanese Mathematical Methods 3 & 4 Although it is possible to prepare for Maths Methods Units 3 and 4 by studying only Maths Methods 1 and 2 a stronger basis is obtained by also studying Specialist Mathematics or General Mathematics M. Specialist Mathematics 3 & 4 Students must complete Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 and Specialist Mathematics Units 1 and 2. Music Performance Units 3 and 4 assume that a student has had approximately three years experience on a musical instrument or in voice prior to Year 11; or consultation with or approval from the Head of Performing Arts. Physics Technology It is recommended that students have a minimum of Year 10 experience in the area of Technology that they are choosing. Accounting Students are advised to do Unit 2 before attempting Units 3 and 4. Biology Further Mathematics 3 & 4 Students are advised to complete General Mathematics F Units 1 and 2 or General Mathematics M Units 1 and 2. Chemistry Students must complete Units 1 and 2 before attempting Units 3 and 4. French Computing Page 136
4 SELECTING A FIRST YEAR VCE PROGRAM Year 11 Students in 2019 Where do I start? Research - be informed! Since a number of factors will influence your choice of units in constructing a VCE program, you will need to consider the following questions: What VCAA requirements do I have to meet in order to complete the VCE? (The VCAA is responsible for curriculum, assessment and certification of the VCE.) What Penola Catholic College requirements do I have to meet? What prerequisites and recommended studies do I need to undertake for a particular career pathway? What units are available? What advice have I received from parents, teachers, careers advisers? What units or combinations of units are going to be the most interesting and what demands will they place on me? Do I have a specific career pathway in mind or do I want to keep my options as wide as possible? Do I wish to take up one of the VET Certificates being offered? Would I benefit from being part of the VCAL Program. Reasearch a wide range of options and utilise websites like: VCAA Requirements In selecting a program, VCAA requirements are as follows: Over the two VCE years all students must do: Four units of the Group In the first year, the two Group Units can be selected for 1 and 2 or 1 and either Language 1 or 2. The remaining units will be decided by the student. To qualify for the award of the VCE you will be required to satisfactorily complete ( pass ) at least 16 of the units studied. These units must include : At least three of the four units of the Group Three sequences of Unit 3 and 4 studies other than. The remaining units may be any of those studied over the two years apart from. Please Note: Only a maximum of six (6) study scores are used to calculate the ATAR. Penola Catholic College Requirements In your first year of the VCE at Penola Catholic College you will be required to study 14 units. You also have the opportunity to select a Unit 3 and 4 sequence from a range of VCE studies in your first year after consultation with the College. When you enter your second year of the VCE at Penola Catholic College you will be encouraged to take four pairs of Unit 3 and 4 studies apart from. Although VCAA requires only three pairs of Unit 3 and 4 studies for satisfactory completion of the certificate, staff believe that students should have a safety margin in their program. Penola Catholic College requires that in your first year of the VCE you take either: Religion and Society Units 1 and 2 OR If approved for accelerated studies students may undertake Texts and Traditions 3/4 OR Religion and Society 3/4. 6 SELECTING A SECOND YEAR VCE PROGRAM Year 12 Students in 2019 The following pages are for students entering the second year of their VCE Program. In making their selections, students need to consider: a) the units completed satisfactorily in Semester One b) the units expected to be completed satisfactorily in the current Semester Two c) the mid year examination performance in each subject To qualify for the award of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) students will be required to satisfactorily complete at least 16 of the units they have studied. These 16 units must include: at least three of the four units of the Group including units 3 and 4 (see pages 34 to 41) a further three pairs from Units 3 & 4 studies the remaining units may be any of those studied over the two years except the 16 units may include a VET subject that is provided at the College At Penola Catholic College students must attempt 10 units in their second year including the compulsory Units 3 & 4 of the Group and participate in the school-based Religious Education elective program. NOTE: The minimum number of Unit 3 and 4 sequences, other than the Group, is three. However, in doing four or even five there are additional points possible for tertiary selection. Please note that the ATAR is calculated based on the following scores: the next 3 best scores 10% of 5th subject and 10% of the 6th subject Beyond satisfying the VCAA requirements, students also need to satisfy their own requirements. In making selections consider the following: What units are available? (See page 140) What prerequisites and recommended studies do I need to undertake for a particular career pathway? Have I considered the VET options? Have I been invited to consider the VCAL options? What advice have I received from parents, teachers, careers counsellors and year level coordinators? What units or combinations of units are going to be the most interesting and what demands will they place on me? Am I interested in and capable of studying at Melbourne University or Monash University while doing Year 12? (See page 27) VCE offers students an opportunity to either undertake a general program or to develop a special emphasis in their program. A general program might be suited to those students who are undecided about their post - school options as it would lead to a wide range of further study or work options For many students, however, the VCE years mark the stage at which they begin to develop an emphasis in their program related to career interests in the Arts, Business, Humanities, Maths, Science and Technology areas. Some examples of programs can be seen on the online version of the Handbook. See MyPenola or the College website. Page 139

8 FILLING IN YOUR FIRST YEAR VCE After having consulted with your parents, teachers, level co-ordinators and careers staff you should be in a position to map out a two year course of study for your VCE by completing the Program Planner on pages 143 and 144. You will need to do this in conjunction with the information on the previous pages. In particular note: the VCE Unit Descriptions on pages 29 to 127. the VCAL Unit Descriptions on pages 128 to 133. the listing of Unit 1 and 2 Offerings and Unit 3 and 4 Offerings on pages 138 and 140. your strengths in various subject areas. Remember to make sure you meet all the VCAA and Penola Catholic College requirements as you plan your VCE Program over the two years. Bring this handbook with the completed VCE Program Planner to the interview you will have at Penola Catholic College where you will confirm your final unit selections. Steps to Follow: 1. Write in your selected R.E. units over the two years. 2. Decide which option you are going to take (see pages 34 to 41). 3. Write in your selection of additional units from the range of studies listed to make up the full two year program of the VCE. For Semester One and Two this involves selecting 10 additional units for the first year. For Semester Three and Four, in the second year, this usually involves selecting 8 additional units. 4. Write in which pathways the program is trying to open up for you. Can I make changes to my program over the two years? Yes. You have the opportunity to adjust your Unit 1 selections at the beginning of Semester One and Unit 2 selections at the end of Semester One. You can also adjust and make new selections at the end of your first year of the VCE. Changes are, however, limited in the second year of your VCE because Unit 3 and 4 studies are sequential (i.e. a student cannot study Unit 4 without having completed Unit 3). Page 141
