1 PGR Bulletin Queen s University Belfast School of Law 17/02/2017 Issue 04 Graduate School at QUB Research Scholar Workshop 23 February pm Invitation by Professor Richard English All QUB staff and students are invited to attend the first in a series of Research Scholar Workshops to be held in the Graduate School at QUB. These will be one-hour sessions, at each of which a leading scholar will discuss their work, and anyone attending must have read some of the work published by the scholar in question. There'll be no Lecture or Paper on the day. Rather, we'll go straight to questions and discussion: about the author's research, about the wider themes that it raises, about how it relates to the work of those attending. People from any part of the University are welcome to attend all of the Workshops, so there is a genuine interdisciplinarity about the series. The first session will be held on Thursday 23 February (1-2pm in Room TR2, Graduate School, QUB) and will focus on the work of Professor David Livingstone (whose biography is included at the end of this message). Attendees at the Workshop need to have read at least one of the following books by Professor Livingstone, please: Darwin's Forgotten Defenders: The Encounter between Evangelical Theology and Evolutionary Thought (Scottish Academic Press, 1987) Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and the Culture of American Science (University of Alabama Press, 1987) The Geographical Tradition: Episodes in the History of a Contested Enterprise (John Wiley, 1992) Putting Science in its Place: Geographies of Scientific Knowledge (University of Chicago Press, 2003) Adam's Ancestors: Race, Religion and the Politics of Human Origins (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008) Dealing with Darwin: Place, Politics and Rhetoric in Religious Engagements with Eviolution (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014) I hope that this, and future sessions, will be of interest to many of you. Very best wishes, Richard English David Livingstone is Professor of Geography and Intellectual History at the Queen's University of Belfast where he works on the history of geographical knowledge and the historical geographies of science and religion. He is currently completing an intellectual history of climatic reductionism, funded by a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship, under the title The Empire of Climate. He is the author of a number of books including Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and the Culture of American Science (1987), Darwin s Forgotten Defenders (1987), The Geographical Tradition (1992), Putting Science in its Place (2003), Adam s Ancestors: Race, Religion and the Politics of Human Origins (2008) and Dealing with Darwin: Place, Politics and Rhetoric in Religious Engagements with Evolution (2014).

2 Conference and Call for Papers SLS 2017 Graduate Conference University College Dublin 4 th September 2017 The annual Graduate Conference of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) will take place on Monday 4 th September 2017 at the Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin (UCD). The organisers invite papers on law and law related topics from graduate students and those in the early stages of their research careers. The theme of the main SLS conference (to be held at UCD from Tuesday 5 th September Friday 8 th September) is The Diverse Unities of Law, and papers examining aspects of this topic are also welcome in the Graduate Conference. However, the Graduate Conference is open to papers on all law and law related topics. The Graduate Conference programme will include a session on Getting Research Published, as well as a keynote speaker. The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) is the learned society for those who teach law in a university or similar institution or who are otherwise engaged in legal scholarship. As at the beginning of 2016 the SLS had nearly 3000 members consisting primarily of academic lawyers in the UK and Ireland. The SLS (formerly called The Society of Public Teachers of Law) was founded in 1908 and has charitable status. It is the oldest as well as the largest learned society in the field of law. The Society is the principal representative body for legal academics in the UK as well as one of the larger learned societies in arts, humanities and social science. All the Law PhD students are strongly encouraged to consider submitting to the SLS 2017 Graduate Conference. Noteworthy-- it is a free event. However, international students should consider visa implications given the Conference will be held in Dublin. Dr Marek Martyniszyn The Graduate Conference is generously funded by the SLS and there will be no attendance fee (there is a special graduate rate for those who wish to stay on for the main SLS conference). Accommodation will be available at subsidised rates at a hotel in central Dublin on the nights of 3 rd and 4 th September, to allow participants to make the most of Dublin. Participants will be invited to the conference dinner on the evening of 4 th September, which will be held at a venue in Dublin city centre. Abstracts no longer than 300 words are to be submitted by 5.30pm GMT on 14 th April 2017 to andrew.jackson@ucd.ie. Those whose papers are selected for inclusion will be asked to submit a short paper (maximum 5,000 words) by 4 th August Participants are encouraged to rely on their institutions to fund their attendance at the Graduate Conference. If the application of this usual approach would prevent your ability to participate, it may be that some limited help can be given. Those whose papers are selected for inclusion will be given the opportunity to indicate if they require assistance in this way.

3 Call for Participants International Summer Research Institute hosted by the European Academy, Bolzano-Bozen, South Tyrol, Italy A World in Turmoil: Territory, Power-Sharing and Conflicts 19 June 1 July 2017 Queen s University Belfast s Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice and the School of Law are now inviting post-graduate research students to apply for up to two places in the 7 th edition of the International Summer Research Institute, hosted by the European Academy, Bolzano-Bozen, South Tyrol, Italy. The Summer Institute will run from 19 June 1 July 2017 and will include daily seminars by leading scholars from around the world on the themes of territory, power-sharing, and conflict. In addition to daily seminars, there will be field trips to the Ladin Valley and the Regional Parliament. Students will also have an opportunity to present their own research for feedback. Fees and Expenses The two students selected for participation will receive free tuition and accommodation for the duration of the Summer Institute (19 June 1 July). Breakfast and lunches on weekdays will also be provided free of charge. In addition, a maximum of 300 for each selected student will be provided to cover travel to and from the Summer Institute. Application Process Interested students should send a CV and brief cover letter (500 words maximum) to Dr. Alex Schwartz ( a.schwartz@qub.ac.uk) explaining why their participation in the Summer Research Institute would be of benefit to their studies.
