1 Tēnā Koutou Katoa Issue September 2017 Kia ora tatou Today we had the pleasure of Jacinda Adern visiting Taieri College. After being welcomed by our TK students, Jacinda spoke at an assembly in front of students from Years It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear firsthand from someone who has been at the forefront of mass media since taking over the leadership of the Labour Party. We see Jacinda as an excellent role model for our students and we thank those involved for providing this unique opportunity, particularly when we are so close to the general election. I enjoyed watching our junior and senior Kapa Haka groups perform at the 2017 Polyfest that was held this week at the Edgar Centre. Both groups brought prodigious mana to Taieri College with the high-quality performance they delivered. My congratulations to everyone who was involved. Several TK students participated in our annual winter sports exchange against Longford Intermediate from Gore. After a rousing Mihi Whakatau from both schools the games commenced. Taieri College turned the tables from last year and dominated the exchange on the scoreboard. As well as producing excellent performances the exchange was also memorable for the sportsmanship displayed by both schools. Finally, from me some clarification on a tragic incident that occurred in Anzac Park on Tuesday. The following is a statement that the NZ Police have asked to be shared with our community. We understand that it is understood by some students that there was a suspected self-inflicted death near the school on Tuesday. That is not the case. A woman in her eighties collapsed and died in Anzac Park on 12 September 2017 as a consequence of a pre-existing medical condition. A post mortem examination confirms that her death was due to natural causes. NZ Police. This incident really highlighted the dangers and perils of social media. Rumours circulated across Mosgiel very quickly that quite simply were not true. We have no idea who started them and no way of finding out where they originated from. As a college we were in no position to make public comment as the sudden death was out of our jurisdiction and subject to a coronal investigation. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family of the deceased lady. It makes the intersection even more dangerous and there isn t the room in the carpark. Also; please do not double park in Green Street or on the bus stops on Church St or on the yellow lines anywhere, waiting to pick up your student.

Year 9 Scholarship Information Taieri College offers three types of scholarships to Year 9 students; Academic Scholarship, Sport Scholarship, and Performing / Visual Arts Scholarship (includes Art, Drama, Dance, Music, Media). Students enrolled in Taieri College as Year 8 pupils for 2017 are invited to apply for these scholarships. Application forms are available from the school office. Applications close Friday 27 October 2017 and Scholarships will be announced at the start of Taieri College Sports Council Mission: To promote and encourage sport at Taieri College and on the Taieri The Sports Council is a committee made up of both parents and teachers. We rely heavily on the generosity of sponsorship to keep our programmes in place; fund teams and individuals; supply equipment; upgrade playing areas; to purchase school vans. 3 Friends of Taieri College Spring Raffle Thanks to all those families who have been busy selling our raffle cards. Please continue to bring in donations of non-perishable items for the grocery hampers. Any contributions are very welcome. Stars on Stage DVD Order If you would like to get a copy or two of this year s Stars on Stage performances you can do so by filling in the order form below and returning it with payment to the Student Slide. The payment and order form are to be placed in an envelope with the student s full name, class, payment amount and the title Stars on Stage DVD Order. Student Representative Election for Board of Trustees 2018 Nominations are invited for the election of one student representative to the Board of Trustees. Nomination forms can be obtained from the college office. Nominations close at noon on Wednesday 20 September 2017 and should be accompanied by a candidate s statement. The voting roll is open for inspection at the college and can be viewed during hours the office is open. There will also be a list of candidates names for inspection, as they come to hand, on the noticeboard outside the college office. The poll closes at noon on Friday 29 September 2017 (last day of term). Signed D Seddon Returning Officer Year 9 and 10 Social Studies Quiz On Thursday afternoon seven teams of three competed at the annual Otago Daily Times Xtra Spelling Quiz at Kaikorai Valley College. As usual it was hotly contested with questions ranging from people in the news, current events, flags and a good old fashioned scavenger hunt through the Otago Daily Times. All Taieri College teams did well with the team of Cameron Stewart, Gibson Wheeler and Jacob Smith performing exceptionally well, gaining a score of 95 out of 100. This gave them third place overall, a great achievement, and they were only two points off being first. A special thank you to Ivan Behrnes from the Otago Daily Times as this was his last year running this event after many, many years.

4 Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival This past Monday the Dunedin Town Hall was bustling with high school music students from all across Otago to come together for the annual Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival. Taieri College was represented by seven musicians in both the mass orchestra and the combined choir. Their efforts during the day s practice led to a successful and well-attended evening concert with all our students performing at a high level. Well done to all the Taieri College students involved. Bruce Saves the Day A big thank you to Bruce yesterday for helping us move a piano to a very grateful home! The banter in the van was second to none - quintessentially Kiwi!!! The boys loved it.

The course is a really unique opportunity for students to learn the latest in design software and start to build up a portfolio of design work. DairyNZ Career Day Year 12 and 13 students should consider attending next month's DairyNZ Career Day to find out about a broad range of career opportunities. The event will be held at Lincoln University on Tuesday 10 October 2017 from 9am 3pm. It's free and they will provide morning tea and lunch, there are only 20 places, so be in quick! Dairying is one of the country's most important economic activities and draws on the skills of many professionals, including scientists, farm managers, and accountants. The career day offers a chance to find out more about the sector and meet dairying professionals who work in a variety of different roles. Students will get some hot tips on how to apply for the DairyNZ Scholarship. As a bonus they can walk off some of that lunch with a tour of the beautiful campus.
