2 Strategic Planning Retreat Summary February 24, 2017 Clovis Veterans Memorial District We had a total of 60 participants join us for the Strategic Planning Retreat held Friday, February 24 th. A brief summary of our activities are listed below. Ice Breaker A big thank you to Anna Martinez, Tracy Stuntz, and Max Hembd for their fun and interactive ice breaker and game breaks. Competition got a little heated and Max took a tackle or two, but we all learned a little more about the EMP and our college. College Council/Data Analysis While College Council met to discuss Educational Master Plan, others at the planning retreat begun some data analysis led by Michelle Johnson and consultant John Spevak. Welcome Dr. Bennett officially kicked of the planning portion after the College Council meeting ended. She was excited to announce that they had approved the recommendation of the final draft of the Educational Master Plan to the president and Board of Trustees. Introduction to Strategic Planning John Spevak & John Forbes discussed the importance of effectively using our plan and not letting it collect dust on the shelf. They then asked the group to think about their why; why each person was in the educational field and a few attendees reported out. Dr. Forbes also shared his story and we learned his career started in inner city Chicago with students desperate to learn but completely lacking resources. Tying Data Analysis to our Strategic Plan In our second look at data, we dove a little deeper and shared the information that really stood out to each table. Discussion was focused on six areas: transfer and workforce development, our service area, distance education, enrollment and FTES, the CCCCO Scorecard, and community building.

3 Our Strategic Planning Journey Before getting started on action plan ideas for our new plan, Kelly Fowler reviewed the progress made on the plan as well as some new initiatives from the state chancellor s office. Lee Brown shared the district s updated mission and vision, which are used as a foundation for the colleges planning. Lorrie Hopper presented the six overarching goals from the CCC Educational Master Plan. Our Strategic Planning goals will need link to our long-term goals. Development of Strategic Plan Outcomes and Action Plans Each table was assigned one of the six goals from the Educational Master Plan and brainstormed action plans and outcomes that we could work on over the next four years. These ideas were collected and discussed. They are what we will use to begin the first draft of our Strategic Plan. Some common themes include strengthening relationships with local high schools and local businesses, developing more activities to increase student engagement, engaging in strategic course scheduling and expanding program offerings, and expanding our online resources for both student services and public information purposes. Closing Remarks and Next Steps Dr. Bennett closed the session by thanking all those who participated.
