First-time freshmen for Fall 2017 include one student who entered with sophomore standing due to credit earned while in high school. Other freshmen are those students who have been enrolled in the past but are still considered freshmen based on earned credits. New students classified as "Other Freshmen" include transfer students and undergraduates seeking another BS degree who did not earn their first BS degree from MMA. New students who earned their first BS degree from MMA and return for a second BS degree are classified based on cumulative credits, which continue from the prior degree. 37 OTHER MEASURES OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS Background: The mission of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is to provide a quality education for graduates serving in the merchant marine, the military services, and those who serve the interests of the Commonwealth, Nation and global marketplace. The Academy does so by combining a rigorous academic program with a regimented lifestyle that instills honor, responsibility, discipline, and leadership (Approved by the MMA Board of Trustees, September 2013). In keeping with the Academy's mission, in addition to retention and graduation rates, additional indicators of student achievement and success are tracked. These indicators pertain to student learning outcomes, student career outcomes, and the student experience.
