2 2019 FACILITY/SYSTEM SPONSORSHIP FACT SHEET FORM WHAT IS THE SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (SEP)? SEP seeks to promote racial and ethnic diversity in health care management. SEP is an internship program for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree with a concentration in health care management. Students are assigned to members of the sponsoring facility s senior management staff to gain firsthand experience of the operations and management issues the organization faces. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? SEP interns learn about the major issues, skills, and responsibilities involved with health care management. The summer experience will enhance their knowledge and understanding of the field, putting them in a better position to pursue a career in health care administration. SEP also provides an opportunity for health care institutions and systems to promote racial and ethnic diversity in leadership. WHY PARTICIPATE? To shape future leaders by helping to develop and mentor a diverse health care workforce. WHAT ARE THE DATES? The program begins on June 3, 2019, and ends on August 9, SEP interns remain on-site for the summer, with the following exceptions: June 3: Orientation session at GNYHA (half-day) June 26 27: Two-day trip to Washington, DC July 11 12: Two-day educational series at GNYHA August 9: Final presentations and closing ceremony at GNYHA (Interns present their projects to fellow students and preceptors. Hospital sponsors and preceptors are encouraged to attend this session.) WHAT ARE THE COSTS? Costs of placing an undergraduate or graduate student on the institution s payroll. The payment rate is established by the institution. At the very least, minimum wage must be given. Parking permit provided (if applicable). GNYHA asks hospitals to pay interns for the days they attend GNYHA-sponsored events that are part of the internship program s professional development component. This includes the orientation day, educational sessions, health care leadership conference, and presentations at GNYHA.

3 2019 FACILITY/SYSTEM SPONSORSHIP FACT SHEET FORM HOW ARE SEP INTERNS SELECTED AND ASSIGNED TO A FACILITY? Phase 1: Submitted applications are evaluated based on academic excellence, interest in and commitment to a health care management career, communication skills as presented in the applicants personal statements, and references from faculty, community members, and employers. We look for ambitious students with a strong potential for success. Students who meet the criteria are selected to interview with GNYHA. This first round of interviews will be conducted in mid-march at GNYHA. Phase 2: Applicants who successfully interview with GNYHA go through a matching process. Recommended applicants and their information are sent to the hospital s coordinator, who decides whether to interview that applicant. Phase 3: Sponsoring institutions conduct a second round of interviews. The facility or system coordinator works with GNYHA to schedule an interview with the student, and then interviews the student at their institution. Phase 4: Once the institution agrees to accept a student after the hospital interview, the student is offered the internship for the summer. SEP seeks to promote racial and ethnic diversity in health care management. Members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

4 ROLES SPECIFIC ROLES FOR THE SPONSORING FACILITY OR SYSTEM Facility or System Coordinator Each sponsoring facility must designate a coordinator who will serve as a liaison between the hospital and GNYHA. The facility or system coordinator will help to ensure appropriate hospital orientation for the SEP intern, as well as handle Human Resources related issues, such as hospital orientation and wages. For participating health systems, a health system coordinator must be selected to facilitate the process at each of its SEP-participating facilities. After GNYHA interviews the applicants, the coordinator will receive applications for the students recommended for the intern positions available. GNYHA will work with facility or system coordinators to ensure that hospital-student interviews are completed by May 10, A sponsor commitment form identifying the facility coordinator is attached. Please submit this form by March 8, Preceptor Preceptors are responsible for working with SEP interns on a daily basis and providing a work area with access to a computer and telephone. The preceptor must have a real-world project for the duration of the internship. The intern will be required to formally present at the program s graduation ceremony. Rotations through various departments are strongly encouraged. The preceptor is encouraged to attend the intern s presentation at GNYHA at the end of the program. Preceptor forms are attached to allow a facility or system to describe the intern s project and request desired skills (e.g., the intern must be proficient in Excel or strong writing ability ). These forms may be copied if needed. Please submit this form by March 8, 2019.
